I'd go in drag if necessary.

I'd say these rules apply to all people at a bar, not just kids.

The biergarten and the English pub are great, especially if your culture is German or British, but they tend not to have functional equivalents in American society so they don't work very well as counterexamples for emulation.

If you're concerned with the maintenance of community and a child's integration in that community, that's a noble, laudatory sentiment, but I suspect that for most parents, the only real motivation for bringing a kid to a bar would be because it's convenient for the parent.

I didnt read all the replies yet, but i about grew up in a bar in NW WI in the late 80's. And it was a bar-bar. No food, questionable clientele, etc, etc. I never did mind it, played the arcade games, pinball, some pool, ate some candy, pop-fine with me.

That being said, i have two young girls now. I have never taken them to a bar ( i classify that as an establishment that does NOT serve any food- Heggies pizza doesnt count). Im not totally against it, but i dont frequent many true bars anymore, unless while hunting or snowmobiling in NW WI, in which case kids in the bar is still a very common thing.

I don't feel it's appropriate to take children to a bar. I would never do it. Would you be driving home with your child in the car after you leave this bar?

My old man took me to bars when I was a kid and I resented him for it. I much rather would have been doing other things than watching him drink. Don't be so selfish.

I'm proud of my Wisconsin upbringing in which being in a bar was allowed but also treated as a privilege. Kids are almost universally welcomed but are expected not to run wild. It's a reasonable expectation and people follow it. My parents no doubt didn't hang out as long as they may have liked and they didn't take us to any biker bars or anything like that. They took us to normal places where they hung out and knew people. They knew what they were exposing their kids to.

Whenever this topic comes up, some people act like every bar is a topless, meth-dealing, house of stabbings, but we know most bars are not that sketchy.

No, I'd be sitting in the car as my wife drives. She loves the food at Toro too.

And when Zissou gets back to the car, Owen says "That's it, I'm gonna fight you Steve" for locking him in the car one too many times. A troubled family, that one.
