Ok, now that I’ve spent months or at least 12 minutes trying to break myself of the terrible habit you all foisted upon me (Pastry stouts, fruited sours, lactose IPAs), I realize I need a carefully assorted regiment of random styles to free my palate from the shackles of hype. So why not ward off the cellar for another year and inject a big box of random beers in December?

That’s right, I’m asking the pointless and nihilistic question that must end all years: should I buy a beer advent calendar? If yes, Bitter Pops or Bottles and Cans? Or something else entirely?

ps - I’m going to abstain from drinking to start December, then dress up as Santa, and drink the entire calendar on one sitting before running around town stealing cookies.

you think I’m joking but how else is 2020 supposed to end?

As it relates to Beer Advent Calendars, I did one a few years ago and it was an expensive waste. It was around $100 for the 24 beers and from a very reputable beer shop (not one of the stores you have listed above) that still gets a good chunk of my beer dollars to this day. I wasn't expecting any limited releases or any super expensive stuff but it was almost entirely the stuff that you would see at Jewel in the section where you can build your own 6 pack for $9.99. Lots of styles but clearly lacking creativity and clearly an easy way to clear the shop's shelves of dusty cans/bottles. The day I brought it home I thought I should probably open all the spots just in case there is an IPA hiding out there around day 22 or 23. Sure enough, on the 20th was a shelf IPA, from Brickstone I believe, that was already around 3 months old.

I would love to hear if anyone has had a great experience with a beer advent calendar. Maybe I would revisit then.

I appreciate your honesty in general, but you should not be discouraging @Quilentro. We all need to see this happen:

I bought the German advent calendar from Costco last year. Enjoyed it, but wouldn't buy it again. At least with that one the beers were beers you can only get in the advent calendar so it'll scratch the tickers itch. I wouldn't bother with the other ones. Those advent calendars are for people who don't know any thing about beer to purchase for their friend or relative who like beer ... and for the store to bring in a nice little profit.

I generally agree. Given the approach some beer stores take with the quality/selection of the beers they include, they're not a bad idea for the casual craft beer fan or someone just starting to explore craft, but probably not ideal for the Beer Advocate crowd.

I thought I saw Bottles and Cans was doing a “taproom” focus this year (eg HA Space?) - would be nice to know how many of the beers will fit that theme. Now, of course, I can’t find a link.

We should start a donated advent calendar for Quilentro. I have some beers in the fridge I will not finish I would donate.

guys, if you gifted me 24 very weird beers, I would write a detailed post describing my anguish, confusion, and grief in sordid detail each night.

This might be your best serious post of all time on BA. I'm definitely in. It'll be an Advent BIF except only he is the target and gets a bunch of weird ass beers.

I definitely don't think you are joking.

1- How do we go about getting Quilentro beer? Do we send it to Croush and he wraps it up to give to him? Do we send it direct to Quilentro? Are there depositories throughout the city?

2- Where is Quilentro getting 24 days? It's a Covid Advent Calendar- if you have 24 beers you have 24 beers, if people send you 250 beers your next 250 nights are going to be busy.

    Fast forward three months.

the little lady walks in from a snowy December walk. A roaring fire is raging in the fireplace. I’m blindfolded, and covered in sticky, soured pastry stouts. Bottles, cans, crowlers, and howlers are rolling all over the floor. “It tastes...” I’m clearly struggling to maintain consciousness, “it tastes like weirdness. Man. I don’t know. This was a bad idea.” 12 socially-distanced internet strangers, masked up and dressed like Santa Claus chant “Ho Ho Ho” in unison.

the little lady shakes her head. “Every. Single. Tuesday... why can’t you just get a real hobby?!”

Bonus points if they're infected. You're lucky I drank a couple doozies during quarantine.

He's definitely not joking, you've seen him at DLD/some of the shares.

It begins. I just need an address. @croush seems like a dicey facilitator though. He'll definitely steal any pastry stouts sent.

don't you still have some “Ye Olde Acidic Wylde Ale” label stickers left that we use to hide pastry stouts from @croush at shares?

Even better, what if we removed the labels from the cans or bottles so he has no idea what he is consuming?
