Taking a trip to visit family in upstate NY and while it's not directly in my path, I figured a stop or two in Michigan would be wise for beer. Closer to south michigan the better, but I understand if I need to travel further north. I am mainly looking for variety of selection - singles for review, a few barrel aged treats, and does Old Nation distribute statewide?

mostly looking at Kalamazoo or Ann Arbor. Any good stores there? It'll just be for beer so like I said the further south the better as I am crossing under michigan.

    Thank you!!

You will find Old Nation at every bottle shop.
Depending on when you are coming, I would consider Transient - several BA stouts currently available.

You can take a quick and easy off/on look at Barney's in New Buffalo at Exit 1 on I-94. If you like what you find then 4-5 miles south on a state highway and you're back on I-80/I-90. If not, Kalamazoo is your next best bet. The West Main Mega-Bev has probably the largest selection, and Drake Party Center is also a good one. Both are just a mile or less off of US-131 and 2-4 miles north of I-94.

Ann Arbor would be your next best option, but if you're schedule will have you there on a Saturday, check to see if it is a football day for U of M. Traffic will bog you down. I've always liked Plum Market, and it's only a half mile off I-94 and way out on the west side of town away from the campus. I've heard good things about Hiller's and The Wine Seller but both are in high traffic commercial areas, although both are close to US-23 exits. (You'll take US-23 back south to Toledo to rejoin I-80/I-90.

P.S. I agree Old Nation is easy to find, but check the date stamp on the bottom of the NEIPA cans. I don't buy them unless I think I'll drink it less than 60 days old, and that's pushing the taste quality.

I don't think there will be any Ann Arbor football traffic this year, but definitely a point to consider.
Agree on Old Nation canning dates. I always check. Just thus week I saw singles of July 2019 Amarillo Green Stone :flushed: I passed.

Yeah, 'Duh' on me! No fans at games means reasonable AA traffic which is always worse on Saturdays anyway.

Thanks guys! Yeah the freshness is mega important to me too. Is it kind of a crapshoot outside of Williston (I think? where they're brewed) to find consistent fresh ones or is it pretty decent for the most part?

It's actually Williamston, but we know what you mean.

I think their NEIPAs are so popular that places that handle them have a good turnover, so it's mostly a case of how close to the 60-day limit you find the beers. Strawberry Tart M-43 was recently released and should all be fresh (I'm not a fan of it or fruity beers in general), and Horse Cart IPA was also released not too long ago (I'm indifferent on it). I like the regular M-43 and Boss Tweed, but haven't had B-43 which you'll likely see on store shelves too.

I second this. Transient puts out amazing BA stouts and they got some available right now. I don't know for how much longer though. And I think you may need to pre-order these from their website so check that out. Their IPAs are generally pretty good as well. Juice is Loose is probably my second favorite hazy IPA in Michigan behind M43.

btw, when is your drive by (or through) Michigan?
