Good morning, all. Time to kick things off here now that we’re well into the weekend.

So, welcome to NBW, formally known as NBS, still the same crowd of beer enthusiasts looking to try a beer new to them and describe their feeling about it, look, smell, taste, mouthfeel and the overall impression of the brew.

Some of us are very strident and talkative and it makes this thread quite special, unique and engaging for quite some years now.

This is my new beer for this day, brought by a friend who has just spent a week of vacation in Southern France (Tarn, Lozère, which are areas many even here have barely even heard of):

That would be a Blanche or witbier, from a local brewery « Fario ». 330ml bottle and 5% ABV.

Poured as usual into my Guinness pint, yellow, a bit opaque and a white head that faded as I was typing this.

Nose and smell, coriander, lime are noticeable.

Taste is similar and sort of « dry » or crisp, slightly bitter finish and easily drinkable. Lime, coriander were used, pleasant.

Mouthfeel is light-bodied, and minimal warmth of alcohol, which is barely noticeable too.

Overall, a good witbier, could maybe have added some stronger flavors, for the style, still enjoyable. A nice present thinking this bottle has traveled all the way up here. Not something to be found here, so I doubt I’d drink again, it’s a long route and journey to be able to enjoy a wide range of beers and breweries.

Cheers all, have a great day, weekend and many outstanding beers in your glass.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 8/5/2020. Pours a hazy orange yellow, with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves thin streaks of lace behind, with excellent retention. 4.5

Smell faint coffee, vanilla, tangerine, pineapple, mango, and apricot. It really is just the right amount of all the flavors and rather pleasant. 4.25

Taste follows but even better and yes coffee stands out but vanilla, tangerine, pineapple, mango, and apricot all play a small roll and make this a great breakfast beer. 4.5

Mouthfeel is a solid medium, a tad sticky but not dry, rather soft carbonation, and at 7% it may drink a little bigger but still very easy drinking. 4.5

Overall this is a very odd combination, that really works well and they got the perfect amount of haze and flavor to make this a very nice treat. Well done Stone and Modern Times. 4.5

Good day BAs and thanks @Shanex for starting this thread. Today's New Breakfast Beer is from @foundersasap - thanks Jeff!

Received 9/8/20 in a Ninja box from @foundersasap. Reviewed 9/19/20. Thanks Jeff!

Date on bottom of can “CANNED ON 07/30/2020”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale straw (SRM 2), clear.
Body – Straw (SRM 3), murky. When held to direct light, translucent. Unfiltered.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.7 cm, aggressive center pour), brilliant white, high density, average duration, diminishing to a four to five mm undulating crown and a complete cap of varying thickness.
Lacing – Good. Wide bands of extremely tiny bubbles.
Aroma – 4 – Fruity hops followed by a bit of caramelly malt. No yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Taste follows nose. Slightly bitter and refreshing. No alcohol (5% ABV, as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl or dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4. Two words I never thought I’d type together – “decent Kolsch”. Fruity, slightly bitter, and refreshing, a bit light-bodied for my taste but still a beer of which I would willingly drink a case or two.

    Rating 4, rDev +3.6%

@SawDog505, any collab between Modern Times and Stone has got to be quite a banger. Enjoy.

Shanex, during your travels in the French countryside, have you ever ventured to Esquelbecq & visited Brasserie Thiriez? If not, I would recommend a visit & maybe a review of a Thiriez beer or two.

A couple years ago I biked from Watou to Esquelbecq & had the pleasure of meeting Daniel & enjoying several great farmhouse style beers. An extra plus at the Brasserie is the old French/Belgium signage that cover the walls of their hospitality bar/room. Several of the signs are from long closed FR/BE Brasseries. Very nice place & people!

    Cheers!

    Rahr & Son's Oktoberfest
    [IMG]
    The review:
12oz can stamped TASTE LIKE GOLD TO ME! 2159 20020 12:13:46 poured into a mug at fridge temp 6.7% ABV. The beer pours medium copper in color with a slight haze and off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and few bubbles. The aroma is mild with yeast and toasted malt. The taste is barely sweet toasty caramel with mild earthy hop flavor and bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good. A strong ABV American version that manages not to be too sweet.

I start my rotation of nightshifts tonight, so that's my only review for today. I'm going to enjoy a few more Oktoberfest beers this cool morning over on the Oktoberfest tasting thread. Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in mug today!:beers:

I live about two hours a drive from Lille and either breweries you mention. Another two on my bucket list I believe. Also, I have a good buddy up there working as a chief in a restaurant so a weekend there is due someday. Cheers.

And now for something completely new!

This beer is a brand new seasonal from Yards Brewing. I have been drinking beers from Yards since they opened in the 1990’s with ESA (Extra Special Ale) on cask being a BIG favorite of mine. A damn shame that ESA is no longer readily available.

I have had a few lagers from Yards in the recent past (e.g., Loyal Lager) and I have been pleased with the lagers they have produced.

This new beer from Yards has an interesting name: Unter Dog Oktoberfest. And as you will see in the photo below there is a depiction of a German Shepard. There must be some sort of backstory here; from the Yards website:

“This Oktoberfest, we’re celebrating the city that never gives up with our new Märzen-style beer. Fetch a 6-pack today, sit back, and roll over with joy. Good boy!

    5.6% ABV

    10 IBU

    13°P OG

    Style: Oktoberfest Lager

    Color: Amber

Ingredients: Munich and Caramel Vienna malts

    Availability: August – October”

Well, some brewing details there but whazzup with “Unter Dog”? Well online translation to the rescue? It turns out that Unter = Under as in Underdog. Because this is a beer that has little chance of winning a contest? Or because somebody was a fan of the old cartoon?

I am not going to overthink this marketing scheme – time to just drink.

Served in my Sly Fox Bock Fest Willi Becher glass:

    Appearance

Amber colored with an off-white head.

    Aroma

Mostly bready malt but there is an aspect of a hint of sweetness.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with predominantly a bready malt character but there is also just a hint of sweetness. There is a low/moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel

A medium body and an off-dry finish.

    Overall

I think this beer is good. Pleasant flavors of bready malt with just a hint of sweetness.

Cheers to Yards to adding this new beer to their portfolio!

Well, that is what they list. It is definitely not a bitter beer - mostly bready with a bit of sweetness.

Maybe they decided to go this low (i.e., 10 IBUs) to permit the subtle sweetness aspect to perceptible? In other words, if there was more than 10 IBUs the beer would not have a sweetness (albeit subtle) aspect to the beer?

    Cheers!

Today’s new to me beer comes by way of @beergoot - La Cumbre Brewing Company’s “La Negra”, an Imperial RIS aged in Four Roses Bourbon Barrels for 5 months...Let’s go!

At 54 degrees the pour presents one finger of tan mousse-like foam atop an inky black body with ruby edges; very good cap retention; heavy ring with heavy bands of sticky lacing; thin legs on swirl. Nose is baker’s chocolate, oak, and a whisper of bourbon; roasted malt; more bourbon as it warms. Taste is bittersweet dark chocolate; oak; dark fruit - raisins/prunes; hint of bourbon on the backend; bitter dark roast finish. Smooth silky feel; medium plus body, moderate minus carbonation; very little warmth from 10.5% abv; dry oak barrel tongue coating. Awesome RIS; enough malt sweetness to balance the bitter roast; sufficiently chocolate to be tasted, but this stout is not chocolaty - the bitter roast is front and center; the BBA adds layers of flavors and drys the finish; pleasant long bitter roast linger; reminds me of Marshal Zhukov’s RIS but elevated by the BBA notes which add to layers of flavors and dryness to the finish.

Dogs have been fed and walked, so it's time for some beer.
Today it will be Barrel Aged Peanut Butter Bomb! from Prairie. As others have noted, there isn't much peanut butter present. Enough for me though.
The beer pours a dark brown/black color. There is just the hint of a head around the circumference of the glass.
Aroma is mostly booze. Chocolate and coffee. Chilies. Hint of peanut butter.
Taste follows the nose. Bourbon mostly. Coffee and chocolate. Some chili heat. A little bit of peanut butter.
    A big-bodied sipper.

Not being a fan of Ambers the construction of these beers always /usually leaves me wanting more, and I find as they warm a bit they usually turn too sweet for my liking. That bready malt mostly turns sweet, not always of course but often enough that I skip the ambers and the seasonal Marzens.
