This is just a small part of something bigger. I searched for like an hour and I couldn't find the MSRP for the Horus bottle. I guess the next step is just to ask the guy I'm trading with what he paid because I would like to stay close to $4$. Regardless, I think I'm likely to go for it and I'll make sure to post here about it once I open it. The beer sounds delicious and it would be my first time with Horus.

    Thanks and cheers!

I don't know the cost, but most of their beers are $30 - $50 - or at least, were. I'd be surprised if this beer was less than $30. If anything, you might actually be getting a "deal", as it wouldn't surprise me if this bottle was $45, which rings a bell in my head (but again, I'm not positive).

Definitely worth it if you're interested in trying Horus beers. I think the fade of coffee is often overstated and like I said above, beers built the way Horus builds beers shouldn't suffer anything less than some minor fade. And if you look back at the old Horus threads people have always complained that he uses coffee beans that are too delicate to stand up to the burly base stout. So you're probably getting it below original retail and its probably still comparable. I'd jump on it

I can't imagine how you'd make a stout that would really showcase Gheisha beans that are ~$70/pound. I also don't want to experiment and learn. Not on my dime anyway.

Folks like to hate on Prop 16, but I've enjoyed it every time I've had it.

Tonight’s beer is a 2016 Narwhal. I have great admiration for Sierra Nevada, some of their beers are amongst my favorites in their respective style (Bigfoot, SN Pale, hell even Torpedo is fantastic). However, I’ve never really loved Narwhal. I’ve also never really cellared it. So here goes.

Pours opaque, dense black with a huge fluffy mocha colored head. Beautiful beer. Aroma is soft roastiness, mild blond roast coffee, subtle vanilla/marshmallow, semisweet cocoa. Taste is huge roastiness, pretty big bitterness, mild dark fruits, coffee and bitter dark chocolate on the finish. Super smooth and nicely drinkable. This is an interesting beer in that has a dichotomy of mellow, almost soft aromas, but hit with an aggressive punch in the taste. I really enjoyed it and it undoubtedly gets better with age.

2014 Trader Joe's Vintage Ale. Man, I bought a bunch of these between '13 and '16, as it was (and is) such a great deal. Brewed by Unibroue, which also happens to brew one of my favorite dark ales (Trois Pistoles). This one has the typical notes of mostly dried fruit, including raisins, prunes. Definitely a nice dose of sweet toffee, Belgian yeast, and hint of port/sherry. There is also a indication of oxidation with a slightly metallic note. The taste is really nice, but my conclusion is immediately one of "this sat for too long". This is yet another reminder (at least to me) that quads and other strong Belgian ales are great within 5 years, but I haven't met one that improves past that point. Still, this is very nice. Not much of a metallic taste. Mostly dark fruit, toffee, a hint of chocolate, and a bit of maple. I think it just feels somewhat muted compared to its former self. The carbonation is definitely lower, which might also be causing some of this. I still give it a thumbs up and I will enjoy the bottle.

Good point about about FO - it doesn't scream barrel like other BA stouts. This one does have a lot of barrel, although the brandy and bourbon make it really interesting. I honestly felt like the brandy barrels overpowered the bourbon, which makes it quite different from a BW from GI. I would also say it's sweeter than the Goose barleywine.

I hear ya. The sweetness turned me off of this one when it was released. It was too sweet. I have felt this way about a couple of BL logic beers - Layer of Influence comes to mind. Honestly, I hate hearing that breweries take a nice stout and then add a bunch of stuff to alter the flavor and essentially sweeten it. I'm much preferring traditional beers these days. I would also like to avoid diabetes!

For this one, I can at least say that it improved after being bottled. The sweetness has faded a bit, making it consumable. The brown sugar comment does sound overwhelming. It had that kind of flavor, but not quite that amount of sweetness. Perhaps a bad description!

MSRP is definitely around $30 for that one, and both the Weller and the Horus likely go for more like $50 as trade value. Regarding the coffee - I think Horus beers will be just fine. Lots of great comments already, so I won't repeat. I will say that some coffee stouts age well (i.e. retain nice coffee flavors), while others are less reliable. Bourbon County Coffee is one of the great examples - I absolutely loved it with 5 years of age. Others, like Mocha Wednesday from the Bruery, doesn't really hold up well. The latter is higher in ABV, but it has to be something about the beans or the way it was brewed. Either way, I know Horus does really well for at least 2 years.

Ya I definitely get what you're saying now. I was thinking about it and realized that it's sort of like.the rating to style thing. Just because you don't personally love it doesn't mean you need to switch to disparaging language, BL makes sweet stouts and its not fair to then make a review complaining about how sweet they are. Much more useful for everyone to take a stab at describing the type of sweetness and let folks decide for themselves if the beer sounds appealing.

I had two instances (a monsters park variant from modern times and a ba stout from revision) where the beer was really a bit much for me and not something I would seek out again. The MT I did dock a bit because it was just soooo overwhelmingly sweet but I still gave it a 4 and the revision I gave nearly a 4.25. They weren't my jam but they delivered what they promise and that's on me for buying something I should have known was.going to be outside.my preference.

Any way, keep the great cellar reviews coming

Back onto the cellar clearing of 2020. Going with a 4 year old Avery Tweak at 17.5% to help my brain shutdown for the night.
Sampling a 12 oz bottle from 2016 bottling.

The beer pours into my snifter a dark coffee brown color with no light passing through. A surprisingly robust fluffy to spongelike head foams up 2 cm and hangs around as a sturdy surface layer. Surprised there is this much head for a high ABV brew with 4 years in the bottle!
The nose on this one is....boozy! I get some dark bakers chocolate, black coffee, and a lot of bourbon and general boozy heat. there is also a bit of dark fruit, raisin and plum mixing and also some molasses notes. Definitely a big complex beer.
First sip reveals a lighter body than I expected and fine, gentle rolling carbonation. texture is kind of slick as it hits my mouth and slides down my throat too easy. But there is also a sticky coating on my palate after each sip. Oh and rounding out the physical traits, is some warming booze. This kicks in right after the swallow and lingers in my mouth and down my throat to my belly. Yup big boozy beer!
Flavor is malts and malts, I dont get any hop character here. I get dark chocolate and brown sugar up front. This moves to some molasses and bourbon in the middle and finishes with more bourbon. I think the coffee flavor has faded out over time. Definitely no hop character on the finish either.
This is a really nice sipping beer and seems just fine after 4 years in my cellar. I am amazed at the head retention on this beer which is still a sturdy surface even at the end of my consumption. very nice, would buy again!

Thanks for your review. This sounds like it's an annual release. If so, when do they typically release the beer? I don't shop at Trader Joe's, but one is nearby and I am a big Unibroue fan.

    Thanks!

Sunday Funday. 2014 Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout.

Pours slightly darker than cola colored, with 1 fingers width of fairly dense tan head. Aroma is is huge chocolate, big vanilla, muted roastiness, pretty prominent smooth bourbon notes especially considering the age. Really great. Taste follows, with really great chocolate and bourbony vanilla. My notes indicate that fresh this one is a bourbon bomb, that has obviously faded with 6 years, but the barrel characters def still there. Flavor profile is very nice, but overall is a bit muted and I do think this is likely past it’s prime. I’m guessing this would likely be ideal around 2-3 years, mellow out those huge bourbon notes and let the base beer characters join the party. Still enjoyed though.

Here is my review of Velvet Merkin - 2018 that I had last night.

Although this review is my first full one of this beer, I’ve had a couple prior versions. Thought it would be fun to share my very brief comments from both to illustrate my feelings over time.

    Velvet Merkin - 2014

    Here’s my comment from 1/3/2015:

Great nose with vanilla and toffee, but the flavor and feel fall flat.

    Here’s my comment from 11/19/2017:

It's taken me a few years but I've finally come to appreciate this beer. A lesson in subtlety and restraint.

    2018 Review from last night:

Look: The beers pours very dark brown from the bottle and it’s nearly black and opaque in the glass. But translucent, dark brown around the edges. A beige head fills the tulip and settles down leaving a ton of lacing behind. Really attractive. No visible carbonation.

Smell: Charred oak, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, milky, walnut.

Tastes: Oh man this beer has held up so well. It’s so smooth and creamy. Up front some subtle milk chocolate and raisin sweetness. These flavors really carry throughout. This beer is so even keeled. It dries out and has some faint bitterness, but that sweetness just lingers the whole time.

    Feel: Nice and prickly carbonation.

Overall: I love this beer. It’s so creamy, almost milky. It’s not a monstrous BBA beer, but rather delicate and very flavorful. It’s exactly like the last time I remember and If I had more I’d have a hard time not drinking them. Such a drinkable and approachable BBA Stout.

Tonight’s beer is a 2018 Bourbon County Midnight Orange. This was by far my lowest rated Bourbon County variant when originally reviewed. I thought that fresh, it was pretty one dimensional and tasted like one of those super cheap orange chocolate bars. Let’s see if two years in the bottle has developed it towards my palate preferences.

Aroma is lovely roasted malt and huge barrel characters. Decent chocolate, but the typical BCB chocolate, not much additional from the adjunct, and orange is essentially unnoticeable. I do get pretty big nutty characters, almost peanut butter like, and large oaky barrel notes. Taste has a bit more chocolate and some orange, although the latter is very subtle the former is very prominent. Real nice chocolate notes, more dark cocoa than milk chocolate, but it doesn’t have that crappy cheap chocolate orange bar flavor it had fresh. More balanced too with the typical BC wonderful roastiness and bourbon barrel characters. For my money, this is undoubtedly better aged than fresh, now that’s mostly because the adjuncts have faded so take that for what it’s worth. But I’m certainly glad I cellared it and gave it another chance.

I normally start seeing it around the beginning of November. It was $4 or $5 for a 750ml a few years ago, but I think it might be up to $7 now. Still, excellent price for such a great beer.

Tonight’s beer is a 2014 Westbrook Bourbon Can Can. When this beer was released, they had a bourbon BA and a red wine BA variant. Fresh, I really liked the bourbon one, but the red wine variant blew me away. However, after approx 6 years in the cellar I fairly recently cracked the red wine one and it was good, but a bit disappointing. Let’s see how the bourbon variant faired.

Pours dark brown with a fizzy tan head; cola like. Massive aroma, tons of vinous dark fruits. Huge dates, figs, and plum. Probably the most dark fruit-forward smelling beer I’ve come across over this 6 month of so of cellar diving. Other aromas are a sugary sweetness, subtle bakers chocolate, and some decently strong bourbon barrel notes. Wonderful nose. Taste is fantastically complex. Chocolate is suprisingly huge and big dark

fruits carry over from the aroma. There’s also a nice balancing bitterness on the back end, and big charred oak and bourbony vanilla barrel notes that linger for ages. Black licorice and subtle roast round things out. Phenomenal. Tons of carbonation in this, bordering on too much which is a surprise after 6 years in the bottle. ABV is noticeable but not in a bad way. Overall, this is a gem. Funny how fresh I thought the red wine variant was notably superior as the red wine barrel notes complemented the base beer so well whereas the bourbon barrel not so much. However, with cellaring the rankings have sorta flipped and I definitely enjoyed this bourbon barrel variant more with age on them both.
