I received an e-mail from a local beer retailer and he listed a new beer: St. Bernardus Tokyo. I visited the St. Bernardus website and apparently this beer’s name is based on a beer they brewed in 2012:

“St. Bernardus Tokyo Sounds familiar? You are quite right, because in 2012 we launched a one-off brew on the occasion of the opening of the first St. Bernardus-themed café in the Japanese capital. Eight years later, you can sample our St. Bernardus Tokyo again, albeit with a new recipe!”

They characterize this beer as being a hybrid beer style: “White beer / Saison”.

The description of this beer is quite intriguing:

    “Character, taste, aromas

St. Bernardus Tokyo is famed for its hints of citrus, combined with likeable florals of chamomile and fruity yeast aromas of banana and red apple. Attentive beer fans may also detect a hint of clove and vanilla, as well as the typical esters of our unique St. Bernardus yeast. A refreshing beer with a spicy aroma and a slight hint of bitterness and sourness on the back of the palate! A real treat for the more adventurous beer fan.”

I look forward to trying this new beer from St. Bernardus.

    Cheers!

Looks like it's 6 33cl bottles in some special packaging. I'd love to try it, but have a feeling this will be well out of my price range.

That will be the case for me too but...I am going to splurge and buy this beer.:flushed:

I have never had a St. Bernardus beer that I didn't think was great.

    Cheers!

TW web site shows it out of stock near me, but priced at $9.99 for a 4 pack for 330ml cans.

I've seen it at Total Wine and Trader Joe's for at least a month or more ($9.99 a sixer at both places), as well as at one local convenience store near me. Picked some up back then, and it was similar to their regular Wit from what I can remember. Anyway, nice to have something different hit the shelves besides the oversaturated glut of IPAs.

If it is indeed a Belgian beer made for the Japanese palate, it is a worthwhile drinker.

It's listed as 33cl cans, but only one place “near” me (140 miles?) has 11.2oz cans (@ $4.29 ea). The others are listed as 12oz, closest place (110 miles away) is selling 16oz drafts for $9.

Looks like it might be less expensive than I thought. If I can find it for $10/6 I'll definitely pick some up.

I don't know, it seems in my area it came and went as some stores (TW) list it , but "out of stock".
It would not have been listed if they didn't have it in their inventory recently.

I was really excited about this one and had it 10 days ago, but sadly it was after a long drinking day by the bars with a friend visiting, as the cap. IDIOT. I just have vague memories from it but hey, I managed to take the picture!

I will definitely try it again, as this one should be right down my alley

White ales are a popular choice in craft beer circles in Japan as are German beer styles. You can find IPAs and stouts over there if you want, but I think Japanese beer drinkers enjoy subtler flavors.

Am I the only one that’s not excited about a new, some would say novelty, beer from St. Bernardus? You’ve been crushing quads and dubbels for damn near 80 years, no need to risk bastardizing the brand with a “white beer/saison hybrid with sourness on the back of the palate”. Seems like not much more than an effort for market share expansion. I expect that from most American craft breweries, but not from St. Bernardus. Goddamnit can no one leave well enough alone?

Alright, I need to get back to yelling at kids to get off my lawn...

You're probably not the only one, but you are probably in the minority.

I don't think releasing a one-off saisonwitbier is a bastardization of the brand ... now if they release a lactose hazy, we can talk ... I mean La Trappe kind of did the same thing with Ora et Labora a couple of years ago - that beer was delicious though. Nothing wrong with releasing a new beer to garner some sales.

When I first read this, I read it as:

"Am I the only one that’s not excited about a new, some would say novelty, beer from St. Bernardus? I’ve been crushing quads and dubbels for damn near 80 years... "

    Now, THAT would've been impressive!
