This is my 1000 beer review and figured I would go with a classic [IMG]
    Weihenstephaner dunkel
    ... dark cloudy reddish brown
....body is light carbonation with about a medium body. Has a slight slick thick feel.
....aroma is banana, banana bread, dark fruit, and dark honey.
..taste is banana and banana bread foremost. Its followed by some dark fruit and dark honey.
..overall this was a delicious beer

Whoops! Mia culpa! The beer is Jackie O's Under A Cloud, a nicely juiced NEIPA.

It sounds really delicious and I´d love to have a nice rye beer right now (the berliner by Alvinne I mentioned before was made with it). Enjoy!

Good evening, and I see NBW is off to a fantastic Saturday start! No pictures as I catch up on my first three reviews of the weekend - all Cigar City offerings.

    Cosmic Collision
Sauternes Barrel Aged Dark Wheatwine - El Catador XII release #2
    12.4% ABV

Sauternes is apparently a French dessert wine. It shows, too. The nose is boozy, but not definitively wine-like. It smells quite a bit like a barleywine, actually, with a nice balance between earthy hops and dark malts.

Similar on the palate. It smells almost like an ABW, but it really comes across very balanced overall. This is where the wine barrel influence shows, leaving behind notes somewhere in between Port and a fruited dessert wine (like cherry wine). Really darn good, and quite different. The only real negative is the appearance; murky, and with no real head to speak of, it's literally unattractive.

    Tip Top Cafe
Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Coffee
    14.8% ABV

Whoa, coffee! Lots of coffee, both on the nose and the palate. The stout base adds lovely, rich chocolate and caramel notes, while the barrel adds booze, pepper, and maybe a hint of cherry. This was a wonderful beer through and through.

Not sure on the age; it's listed as retired on the site, added back in February of last year, so it's entirely possible this is from that same batch. If it's truly ~18 months old, then the coffee must have been nearly overpowering when fresh!

    Port Barrel Aged Barleywine
10% ABV (I went big today, what can I say?)

Quite possibly the best of the bunch. Reminds me of BCBBW, in that there are deep stout-like tones of chocolate, molasses, and coffee that emerge. I'm not sure what Cigar City classifies this as - ABW or E/BBW. It's listed as American on this site, but I would say it was much smoother, mellower, and maltier to me.

The tamest nose of the three, as well, but nearly flawless on the palate and incredibly rewarding. Maybe the most boozy heat of the three, which is funny as it's the lowest in ABV (heh, 10% is the lowest). The Port aging complements the base barleywine superbly.

I think the De Ranke XX Bitter I drank no longer uses brett yeast. I copied a description from the Shelton Brothers importing website which seems to be the old way they used to brew it before they changed to a higher fermenting yeast. Updated description from the brewery's website says:

"XX-bitter is our most bitter, high-fermenting beer. Despite its low alcohol content, it produces a very rich, long lasting, full flavour.

Taste: Very bitter but still balanced. Long-lasting, distinct hop taste."

I definitely smelled an odd funky barnyard-like aroma at least at the beginning, and thought it tasted a little funky. Maybe the yeast had a little bit of a slight Belgian yeast funk to it and some phenols but wasn't necessarily brettanomyces. The hop bitterness definitely dominated the taste in a good way. I would say the beer is comparable to a West-Coast IPA, with a little Belgian twist. Real nice hoppy bitter beer.

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Another work week in the books, and it's time to enjoy life for a day.

And I'm enjoying drinking this, and I have to thank @Dragginballs76 for his generosity here.
Oh, My Darlyn! It's a Scotch Ale, and it's 10% ABV, and from Revelry Brewing.

Yeah, this is a great post work beer, and I really like the flavors I'm getting here.

Pours a nice dark amber color. Off white, 1 finger head. The retention is pretty good here, and there's a nice ring of foam around the glass as it dissipates.
The nose has notes of caramel. I am also getting some sweet malts. I also get a hint of cherry as well.
The taste I'm getting a lot of cherry on it, and that's up front. The caramel comes in on the backside.
Slightly boozy feeling, but not too much. There's a lot of carbonation in this beer. The cherry flavor tartness lingers.
Very interesting beer, and I'm very happy to get the chance to try it.

Thank you Mike once again for this beer. This will be all till tomorrow.

New Beer of the Weekend #4: Unwind Your Mind, a Mosaic, Motueka, and El Dorado IIPA (7.5% ABV) by Hop Butcher for the World, and comes my way courtesy of @FBarber .

Of the three Hop Butcher IIPAs I've now had (well, two had and one having right now), this is by far my least favorite - but it's still really damn good, and depending on your personal preferences, it could easily be your favorite. Low bitterness; soft, creamy body; super juicy.

So what brings it down a notch for me? There's a strange, grassy - and almost mint-like - note right up front; just pure green hops. After that, it becomes incredibly juicy before dank tones take over mid-sip.

That note stands out for me (and I don't love dankness, personally), but everything else is superb. Really a damn good beer. Thanks, Frank, for sending this - and many others! - my way.

Hey, gang. Back with a second beer because why not?

Double-tapping Springdale Barrel Room with a riff on their excellent Brigadeiro stout:

As mildly disappointed as I was with the Razz Hibby, I am very pleased with this rebound beer.

Beautiful pour, almost black with that rocky tan head...eye candy for sure.

The smell is of coffee at first, then bittersweet chocolate emerges with a few degrees of warmth. Just a hint of the alcohol.

This is straightforward and no nonsense. The base Brigadeiro is there with rich malts, layered over with chocolate and coffee in just about equal intensity. The chocolate leans toward the bittersweet variety, but not overpowering.

Not as heavy bodied as the appearance would suggest, definitely elongated lines of the OG base beer. For a stout, very clean on the finish with just a lingering bit of chocolate.

Diggin' this one, kids. Very nice beer worth grabbing if you see it in the wild. I would say it could actually use a bit more of the lactose...maybe.

I transferred all my digital music to YouTube Music and it works decently with Android Auto, but random play did get in a rut of sugar sweet songs for a few weeks.

Next up is another one from @beertunes , one of those fresh hop beers:
Fremont Field to Ferment Pale Ale

There's definitely a quality here that's unique to me. Whether it's a Fremont thing or a PNW fresh hop thing I couldn't really say at the moment. The best way to describe it is resiny or powdery, yet soft and velvety at the same time; not intense as you'd expect, in other words. It also doesn't have that green leafy quality that I remember from a number of other fresh hop ales. So that's a great start.

It's also quite vibrant, yet restrained, which is where the Pale Ale part comes in, and not IPA. Very nice decision, imo.

There are multiple 'orangey' qualities woven together that make up the bulk of the profile- candied orange peel, fresh tangerine, even a touch of savory Major Grey's Chutney. And all of that rides on a steely, firm pale caramel platform. There's some residual sweetness, but just enough; same thing with the bitterness, just enough to notice it. Supporting players include hints of fresh flowers, Crunchberries (sorry, but it's true) and fresh cedar.

Very nice, very drinkable, a lovely A- (4.25). Thanks again, Terry!

Bottled on 6/19/20. Picked this up at a local bottle shop because it's so much less expensive than similar Jackie O's offerings that I decided to take a chance. Poured a 12 ounce bottle into a DFH tulip, not much of a head which disappeared quickly over a murky dark reddish amber body. The smell quickly made me think this would be a good experience because it was very rich in sweet dark fruits and sugars including caramel. With the first taste, it had a disappointingly thin finish; I'm not sure what caused that because every subsequent sip was as full bodied as I'd hoped. The taste itself, in addition to mirroring the smell, has a finishing flavor like the start of a tobacco and leather associated with JW Lee's Harvest Ale or Thomas Hardy. Whether or not I'm reading something in that isn't there I don't know but I haven't had that reaction to other US English Barleywines. And for whatever reason the caramel didn't overwhelm the taste like some might do *cough* Southern Tier *cough*. Mouthfeel is fine but is not quite as much stick to your teeth as I was hoping.

This was definitely a success. It's a bit warm for the first official autumn Saturday; so I didn't want to go into full depth of winter pound the imperial stouts/old ales/winter warmer and everything else high alc mode. Plus I didn't sleep well last night. So it wasn't a good time to drop the hammer and this fit the bill nicely. I'm going back to the bottle shop tomorrow and hopefully find more.

Fremont does a nice job with these, they know that malt is important, even in a FH brew. FWIW, that "leafy" aspect you mention is more apparent is single hop FH brews, and that one being a combo of Centennial (one of the earliest varieties to mature) and Sabro probably helps balance out that aspect.

Taxman Brewing Co. -- Tax Holiday (a remnant from an earlier trade this year with @jkblr - thanks, Jason!)

    3.83/5 rDev -7.9%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Dark body, mahogany in tone, slightly murky; dense and thick off-white head. Earthy aroma; grainy. Malty, boozy flavor; star anise and licorice; boozy; hazelnut. Heavy-ish body yet somehow a tad weak and watery; alcohol heat; warm and slippery.

An interesting holiday ale with character that seems just a twitch weak, yet still an easy enough sipper (especially for the its relatively high octane backbone). 10.0% ABV per the can label.
    ------
Time to clear out some relatively older beers and make room for some new ones. Taxman has been a pretty solid beer I've enjoyed for a few years. This trade beer is a new one, so there is always that thrill...

    Yeahhhh, that's what I'm talking about.
Your guess is correct. De Ranke used to use yeast from Rodenbach and brett was part of the picture. It wasn't unusual for other Belgian brewers to use yeast from Rodenbach, but after they were sold to Palm, Rodenbach eventually stopped supplying their yeast to others. Brewers that relied on this yeast for their own identity had to adapt. @TongoRad

    And speaking of De Ranke...
I'm not telling you something you don't already know, but you need more Brasserie de la Senne in your life.

This evening it was Double The Juice IIPA from Barncat Artisan Ales of Cambridge, Ontario.

Pours a murky, turbid light orange with a substantial head that dissipates slowly leaving a light lacing along the sides of the glass as the beer is consumed. Ugly in the way a NEIPA is supposed to be.

Aroma is heavily on the citrus spectrum. Slight herbal, grassy not in the background.

Dank up front on the tongue. Broad citrus notes follow with a hint of mint on the finish. The alcohol is almost imperceptible.

Body is thick and creamy, but not syrupy.

This is a very good IIPA from Barncat who sit at the top of the IPA food chain here in Ontario. Top notch.
