I didn't truly enjoy it until a couple years ago, and now it's almost all I drink. Weird how our taste buds change.

It's a glorious morning here in the Brazos Valley, nice enough that I've already walked the puppy dog, ate breakfast and poured a new-to-me beer:
Lindeman's Kriek Cherry Lambic, 3.5% ABV

I'd have sworn I've had this one before, but the records showed I had not when I bought this bottle about a month ago. I've had the raspberry, peach and Lindeman's impressive Oude Gueze Cuvee Rene, all very nice. As much as I like cherry candy, I figured the Kriek would be my favorite.

Turns out it's not, but it's still a very good dessert-type beer. It has loads of cherry flavor and cherry candy flavor and is right on the bordline of being too sweet. The nose isn't. Somehow this beer reverses the norm and has a much earthier/tart/funky nose and much sweeter flavor — I find most beer to be the reverse with the nose almost always being sweeter than the flavor. Maybe it's the "natural sweetener" added to the bottle (candi sugar I assume?). Whatever it is, I'd say steer clear of this one and go for the peach or raspberry if you don't like cloyingly sweet things. For me, it's got just enough lemon peel tartness to tame the sweetness, though I wish it tasted a bit more like the aroma, which has a lot more hay, wet hay and funky yeast in it.

    The official review:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/187/600/?ba=Premo88#review
    4.16 (6.9% rDev)

I've tried four Lindeman's beers and have enjoyed all four. Just for Ss and Gs, here's the scorecard:

    Peche 4.36 (+9.8% rDev)
Oude Gueze Cuvee Rene 4.24 (+2.7% rDev)
    Framboise 4.23 (+7.9% rDev)
    Kriek 4.16 (+6.9% rDev)

I think if I could blend this Kriek with maybe a 1/3 of a bottle of Oude Gueze Cuvee Rene, *that* would be my favorite Lindeman's. At some point that probably needs to happen.

    Cheers!

I'm going to start round two of New Beer Weekend with a pair of Arkansas Oktoberfests (not a specific sub-style, to my knowledge  ), which came courtesy of a NBS BIF-embedded LIF from @jvgoor3786 .

    Lost Forty The Hunter
    6.1% ABV

This one does not disappoint! Aroma and flavor are both impressively clean and balanced. It's a touch sweet, clearly letting the malt shine, but it never comes across as cloying or overly sweet. Caramel, lightly toasted white bread, raisin, orange, honey; low bitterness.

It's hardly a detractor from the overall experience, but if I were to quibble, I'd say the body is fuller and slicker than expected, more befitting a beer 1-2% higher in ABV. If I closed my eyes and imagined darker, roastier malts, I'd say the body is more befitting of a Doppelbock.

This is one of the best Oktoberfests I've had in a while, especially from an American brewer. Please replace all Sam Seasonal taps with Lost Forty from now on.

I wonder if @JackHorzempa and @TongoRad have had the opportunity to have any Arkansas Oktoberfests, and if so, what they thought.

    1) I think Lindeman's is underrated (or at the very least underappreciated). Yes, their Lambics and Gueze are a little simpler, and often a little sweeter (in the case of their Lambics), than other higher regarded breweries, but I've consistently found them to be damn good. It's rare that they don't exceed 4.0 for me. I think they fall victim to the classic "rarity" fallacy: because they're so relatively easy to find, they must not be all that great, right?

    2) I agree about changing palates - especially as a cook. I've certainly evolved in my beer tastes over the years, and as I expand my own experience base. It's why I still get whiskey samplers: I'm not ruling it out, eventually. I wouldn't mind enjoying it, and wouldn't rule it out some day - but that day is not right now. (Vodka, on the other hand ... let's talk. :grinning: )

The Chuckanut beers I got from @kemoarps were fantastic! I think Suarez may have surpassed them for me, but they were worth discussing among some of the best US lagers I've had over the last couple of years.

Greetings, NBW, I hope everyone is having a good weekend thus far. I spent yesterday visiting with my parents over dinner and drinks at their place. It was a beautiful late summer/early fall day and I drank a number of good beers. I usually try to write my entries here as I'm finishing up the particular beer, or at least right after drinking it. Today is an exception though because this week's first beer left me particularly excited. I've been enjoying the marzens and festbiers that come with the season lately, and while this isn't a seasonally made beer it is the perfect brew for a crisp fall day.

Danging Gnome is best known for their hazy IPA's and imperial stout's, but they have a passion for making traditional and low abv styles as well. Ginkgo, the most recent release in 2020's tree series, is and English Mild. This is not a style that I gravitate toward, but after reading several glowing reviews in some local groups, I decided to pick up a 4-pack and I am so happy that I did. I may just need another. A particularly aggressive pour left this rich amber/brown liquid topped with a slightly tan and fluffy head that I pushed to the limits of a becher glass. The aroma, as expected, was all malt. Every bit of toasted malt wafts up from the glass. The taste follows the aroma. I've rarely tasted such a clean toasted malt flavor in a beer. It was toasty almost to the point of smokey while some caramel and toffee notes played under all of that beautiful malt. I didn't expect a beer with only 3.6% abv to have as much body as this, but Ginkgo pushes into the medium range. Overall, this was an easy drinking and highly flavorful beer that I could easily drink pint after pint of in pub, and makes me want to explore the style more. :beers:

I bought that FreshFest bundle locally and enjoyed a lot of them, but I think this one was probably my least favorite of the bunch. It doesn't hold a candle to the Dancing Gnome x Warcloud collab in my opinion. Both lagers were fantastic, I thought, with the Cinderlands x Rhythm collab edging out the other for me personally. It's probably not fair to compare them though since they're different styles. I really enjoyed both sour offerings as well.

Next up in my Arkansas Oktoberfest exploration: Ozark Oktoberfest, clocking in at 5.9%, and again courtesy of @jvgoor3786 .

(The Hunter lurks nervously in the background awaiting the judge's result. :stuck_out_tongue: )

I wanted to review these close together to get a more representative impression of each. Plus, we're talking very modest ABV in each. As such, I may as well mention how they stack up. If you want the straight review, that will be linked at the bottom, as always.

Right off the bat, Ozark's Oktoberfest doesn't look quite as good. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it's nowhere near as lively, it's lighter in color (totally fine), and head retention isn't as good. Still, it's an attractive enough beer.

Appropriately, the nose is malt-driven, but what really made The Hunter stand out was the bright balance from the hops. It smelled fresh, clean, and balanced, while this is sweeter.

The malt dominance continues to the palate. This beer is stickier, maltier, and has just the slightest hint of a metallic note. Mouthfeel is a bit creamier, too. Despite the lack of hop presence on the nose, I'd say this is actually a touch more bitter on the palate than The Hunter.

Is this in line with style guidelines, and is it tasty? Absolutely! This is a fine Oktoberfest, and I'm enjoying it. However, The Hunter was an absolute joy, whereas this is simply good. This one is more in line with what I expect from a US Oktoberfest.

Thank you, Mr. JVG, for sending these two Arkansas Oktoberfests my way! Both were enjoyable to review and, more importantly, to drink (I'm still finishing this one).

That's one of my favorite local fall beers. My dad always takes a case home to Michigan with him if he visits this time of year. Glad you enjoyed it! I'll be interested to hear what you think of Ozark's take. It's their first year doing one, I think, but @russpowell and I were both impressed.

Edit: And there it is! I agree with your assessment. Hunter takes it, but I enjoyed both also.

I was out shopping the other day and found this Oktoberfest with stein for $11.99. Seemed like a good bargain to me and, as a bonus, this is a new beer.
Clear gold color. Large white head that disappeared quickly.
Sweet malt aroma, some fruit, some bread.
Taste of caramel, apple, bread. Late hops.
    Crisp and refreshing.

It is tolerable to sit outside, so it must be Fall here. Some small drops of Bearded Iris beers happened here last week and I picked up one Homestyle IPA.

16 oz. can dated Jobs Are Wack 8/27/20

Golden haze, one finger fine white head, full lacing and cap. Nothing floating.
Strong citrus, pineapple, yeast, light pine aromas.
Sour pineapple, lemon, pine, mango, tangerine flavors.
Crisp and bitter, leaning toward dryness. Light bodied. Hoppy tangy aftertaste.
Nicely hop forward but not astringent. Very good straightforward IPA.

Bearded Iris showing up seems like another pandemic event, like fresh Jai Alai, otherwise I'm not complaining.

Appearance: Slightly hazy yellow, big head, looks good!

Smell: Mild danky aroma, followed with some citrus.

Taste: Moderate bitterness throughout, citrusy, some mild berry fruit, medium body.

Overall: The berry notes I often get from mosaic are present, but not too strong. It is a good one for easy drinking to get your mosaic fix on!
