16oz can served in a big snifter. Dated 10/02/20. Bought it yesterday at Bottleworks.

Pours clear, light amber with a small head. Smell is really grassy, leafy, a little honeysuckle.

Taste is honeysuckle and sweet resin syrup. This is interesting. Maybe a little bubblegum flavor.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp, and dry. Nice beer.

Such a great beer, could drink it all day long. All the best that a "wet hop" beer can be.

Happy New Beer Weekend everyone! Wasn't sure what I'd be getting into this weekend until I found a few dusty old sour bottles in the stockpile. Right now I'm starting things off with a TRVE - Ancient Bole, foeder fermented saison ale dry hopped with El Dorado.

This bottle is likely around 4 years old. Bought this a couple years back and never got around to drinking it. TRVE makes some really good interesting sour/wild and farmhouse ales, oak aged, fruit added, etc. I bought about a dozen of their beers when they hit the market here, mostly because of the cool labels and interesting beer styles. This one, not super unique or overly exciting, but an interesting sounding beer to me, foeder fermented saison which I tend to like, and dry hopped with El Dorado because why not?

This pours a real nice looking semi-translucent cloudy foggy pale yellow gold with a creamy white foam head that has decent lacing and good retention.

Smells real interesting, hoppy, fruity floral, farmhousey, a little wild and funky, oaky. Starts off with fruity hop notes of watermelon rind, musty pineapple, tart lemon, citrus peel, some acetic acid, white wine, yeasty esters like apple, pear, apricot, banana, hay, straw, farmhouse funk, hints of barnyard, pale malt, floral spice, oak foeder, slight vanilla, dill, and dusty earthy herbal hop notes.

Tastes a bit vinegary and sharp upfront, tart, acetic, lemon, warheads candy, citrus peel, musty pineapple, passionfruit, watermelon rind, mild lychee, hints of apple, pear, apricot, banana, toasty hay, straw, barnyardy farmhouse funk, a touch of horse blanket, woody oak foeder, white wine, slight vanilla, dill, pale bready crackery malts, floral peppercorn spice, and dusty earthy herbal hop notes. In the end only moderately tart, rather fruity with a real intriguing watermelon rind note that I'm not sure I've picked up in any other beer before, at least so much. Real nice oak aged complexity, with hints of near lambic-ness with it's barnyardy slight horsey and woody spice notes. Almost has an everything or sesame bagel aftertaste lingering.

Feels medium plus bodied, almost thick and snappy with a smooth moderately low carbonation. Finishes quite dry with some spice and fruity white wine notes.

Overall this is a real nice and interesting beer that held up well to the test of time. The hops remain prominent in the acidic environment, the sour level is restrained to a moderate almost mild tartness, giving way to oak foeder fermented complexities to pair with the saison and wild elements. Toasty hay notes, oak, spice, barnyard, dusty hop, light tartness, all play into the near lambic-esque realm that I love. To help seal the deal they seem to have gotten an exquisite watermelon rind note from the El Dorado dry hopping that is exceptional to my tastes. Another really good beer from TRVE Brewing in CO. Cheers all!

Hazey Daze, a Session IPA by English brewery London Beer Factory (4.6% ABV).

Pours a hazy, deep orange coloration with a large, foamy, quickly receeding head. Smells of light biscuity malt and muddled tropical/citrus hops, with notes of mango and orange.

Taste follows the nose, with a decent balance of very light biscuity malt and muddled, tangy tropical and citrus hops, with notes of mango, orange and tangerine. Finishes with a very light bitterness and some mango and orange lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a light body and very strong carbonation.

I'm really not a huge fan of "Session IPAs" and this beer is the perfect example of why that is, drinking more like an orange soda with its sweet, tangy, slighty muddled citrus and lighter tropical hop notes, very low bitterness, light body, almost no malt presence and very strong carbonation. While it's probably a good example of the style and should make for a nice thirst-quencher on a hot summer day, it's really not for me personally at all, to be honest.

Since it's both NBS BIF reveal weekend and my birthday weekend, it's time to get started. I coached two soccer games this morning then my daughter's game was cancelled. The wife is on the way to go to the Alabama game tonight. I have nothing to do but drink beers from @Pinz412 and hang with the kids.

The beer pours a very dark brown color with a fast, thin head and no lacing. It's not very pretty to look at.

The smell is banana, cloves, rye bread, and a bit of wet cardboard - but in a good way.

The taste highlights a spiciness with banana bread on the finish.

The mouthfeel is slightly thin with medium carbonation and a bit dry.

Overall, this is very enjoyable and easy to drink. The flavor is mild but very good.

Got my hands on the new one from, IMO, one of the most consistent breweries out there.
I read somewhere in a beer article that "dank is the new umami". Made me smile. A simple Google inquiry yields this (not beer related) :adjective; disagreeably damp, musty, and typically cold. as in "huge dank caverns"
Well here we go into the beer definition. (can't get rid of that "1." in this post, wtf?)

Aroma is musty/sweet kind of like nice compost or loam (if you compost wort waste).
Taste is a resin fest with a sweet malt is quickly sensed near the end of a sip before a really dry after taste.
Mouthfeel is appropriate for style, medium to light with a hint of oiliness,
Overall this beer is exactly as advertised. No surprise from Sierra Nevada.

Greetings and good afternoon from Callicoon NY.

After some Brown Cow Porter I'm enjoying a couple of Upward Lagers from Upward Brewing in nearby Livingston Manor.

It's a really nice beer, full flavored and crisp, solid snap of bitterness, more American than continental; big Graham cracker malt with prominent lemon spice hops. Made my dad's Yuengling lager taste watery and weak by comparison . Solid B+ (3.75).

Back to the beautiful afternoon- have a good one!

Whippersnapper, a New England IPA by German brewery Fuerst Wiacek (8% ABV).

Pours a hazy, deep orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and citrus/tropical hops, with notes of mango, orange and some distinct floral and slightly herbal accents.

Taste is a good balance of light biscuity malt and quite floral, bitter and slightly herbal and earthy hops, with fruity citrus and tropical notes of mango, papaya and orange, as well as just a hint of mint. Finishes with a light bitterness and some fruity, floral hops lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I'm a little torn about this. While it's actually not that bad for containing Loral hops, I'm still firmly of the opinion that brewers need to stop putting them into IPAs and keep their usage to hoppy Lagers instead. This certainly has those strong floral notes that I've come to associate with Loral hops, but they are really not *too* bad, with some herbal and earthy accents as well, while balanced nicely against the more fruity, slighty zesty citrus and lighter tropical notes of Citra.

Still, at the end of the end this is still too floral for my personal taste, while it also kinda lacks those vibrant, juicy hops and soft mouthfeel that I've come to expect from Fuerst Wiacek a little.

2nd new beer of the weekend: Hati, a 3 Floyds NE IPA courtesy of @ovaltine .

Looks and smells like a NE IPA; color me impressed. A little less impressive on the palate, but still quite good: it's very, very herbal and green, moderately dank, and fairly peppery; citrus is mostly peel (WC style), and tropical is nothing more than an accent. Bitterness is pretty darn high. Mouthfeel is quite lively but still a little creamy.

Is this is a good IPA? Yes, but not world class. Is it the best representation of a NE style IPA? Oh no, definitely not. 3 Floyds is 0-for-2 with me in that respect, but both of those beers were tasty enough without attempting to shove their square bodies through round holes.

Cracking this mystery beer from @2beerdogs and BIF 12. Wrapped in foil with a personal message “8-14 ABV” so I am drinking with caution!
Pours a deep dark brown with a nice creamy one finger head, smells sweet, like a hostess brownie, taste follows, rich decadent desert like, chocolate brownie, a bit of stickyness, medium chewy. A rich desert like beer, too sweet for an RIS.

And the reveal: Bottle Logic, Study Break, a Sweet Milk Stout, well done beer. I’ve been on a study break since my BS in 2001! Thanks Derek.

16oz can served in a big snifter. Dated 10/05/20. Bought it at the Ballard taphouse location yesterday.

Pours clear light amber with a small head that fades to nothing. Smell is barley, slight lager yeast.

Taste is lots of barley, lots of toffee and nuts, slight nutty bitterness. Really nice.

Mouthfeel is light and clean. Nice beer.

Jahrgangsbock, a Doppelbock by German brewery Faust (7.5% ABV).

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep ruby red to mahogany brown coloration with a medium, fluffy head that soon fades to nothing. Smells of bready, caramel malt and rather distinct red/dark fruit notes of cherry, apricot, fig and plum, with just a hint of coffee and honey also coming through.

Taste is an excellent balance of bready, caramel malt, wildflower honey and distinct red/dark fruit notes of red grape, cherry apricot, fig and plum, as well as just a hint of coffee and marzipan, with a light underlying tartness. Finishes with a light sweetness and tartness and some cherry, apricot, fig and honey lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and light/medium carbonation.

To be honest, I was a little apprehensive about buying a 3-year old fliptop bottle, but despite light oxidation notes that are so subtle that they only benefit the beer, this has held up marvellously. There is a very subtle sherry vibe to this, with some red grape, cherry and marzipan accents, as well as more distinct apricot, fig and plum notes and more earthy hints of coffee and a light tartness that serve as a great counterpoint to the sweet, caramel malt and wildflower honey notes here.

Overall, this is a terrific, complex and well-balanced Doppelbock that still feels pretty mellow, without a hint of booziness or overt sweetness to it and a very distinct, vibrant fruity flavor profile that is kinda unique among most Doppelbocks I've tried so far. I reckon that this has only benefitted from its age, making for an incredibly enjoyable example of the style.

I have a very good beer nerd friend (anyone who ships you TWO CASES of Zombie Dust, which he did 6 or 7 years ago whilst we lived in Minnesota, is a “very good beer nerd friend,” IMHO) said that Floyds is really struggling to “shape” and dial in their hazy game, if that makes sense.

Any brewery that makes hop bombs the quality of Permanent Funeral, Dreadnaught, Alpha King, and ZD should forget chasing trends and just do what they already do so well, IMHO.

Clouds are setting in and temps cooling off to this fantastic fall day. Getting into my second Treehouse beer compliments of @WunderLlama in a return ninja hit. Aroma jumps right out with a serious assault, hops galore with the base beer, Julius in the background, sweet cream sickle, pungent and dank pine, grapefruit, orange, pineapple. Really appreciate the chance to enjoy this whale. Thanks Maynard.

As the warm days are disappearing and autumn leaves are falling, for some odd reason I selected a summer beer in my most recent on-line order. (Due to risk factors, I still avoid going into stores as much as possible, and, fortunately, one of my favorite liquor stores is still offering curb-side pickup.)

Anyhow, back to the beer. The is a summer "extended seasonal" from Schell that I've been meaning to try, but somehow the summer slipped away, or it was always just below the cut line on my orders.

August Schell Fort Road Blonde Kölsch-Style Ale
    ABV: 4.5%
    IBU: 22

1 inch white head, thick, with moderate retention. Leaves thick lacing. Clear, yellow trending a bit toward gold, vigorously carbonated. Very good looking in the sham pilsner glass.

Inviting aroma; bread, grass, floral, slightly sweet, perhaps honey.

Taste starts out a bit tart, a little bitter, with the bread and sweet honey in the middle. It picks up a bit of earthiness as it warms. The finish is mildly tart, bready, complemented by the floral hops. The aftertaste is quite nice: bread, clean, and quite dry (what happened to the honey? - Not that I'm complaining - the dry finish was just a bit unexpected based on how it started, but quite enjoyable).

Mouth feel has good body for the style, crisply refreshing, excellent carbonation on the tongue.

Overall, this is an excellent summer beer. I'll have to grab more next year when it will be more seasonally spot on. It is good to have a locally-brewed kölsch-style beer that does not feel the need to jazz it up with various citrus fruits.

(I guess the name "Blonde" is a marketing thing, not a style indicator; the brewer does - in small print just underneath the large "Blonde" - call it a "Kölsch-Style Ale".)
