Time for my first mystery beer of the day - courtesy of @ovaltine !

I reviewed this blind over on the BIF thread, and my resulting guess was an imperial/strong farmhouse ale. It's Belgian through-and-through, but I can't quite get anything else out of it. Rustic? Check. Light citrus? Check. Thick malt base? Check. But fruit? Oak aged? I've got nothing. Nothing really stands out.

Let me give you more details. The most prominent note on the nose is Belgian yeast. It's a bit rustic and musty; straw, hay, banana, honey, and a touch of clove. Before you think it could be a Brett ale, however, the palate sets you straight: it's still musty and rustic, but it's thickly malty, and not at all funky (and certainly not sour). Growing banana notes, with hints of clove and coriander on the finish.

    And the reveal:

Bare Hands Grow a Pair Belgian Strong Pale Ale with pears and wheat

I did not get pears! In fact, in my live review, I suggested that while it could have had fruit, there wasn't anything that stood out (my partner, after a few sips, concurred: there was something there, but she couldn't identify what). Pears make sense; in a BSPA, they're not going to stand out strongly, and will overall blend in quite well.

This was a treat. I always love reviewing mystery beers!

    Oh! And the review, below:

    4.0 (straight 4s) / -1.2% (2nd review)

Thanks Mike! I think I did pretty well (comparing the live review and my post-reveal thoughts).

    Cheers!

FWIW, in the “old days” (10 years or so ago), Spotted Cow was packaged in 12 oz bottles and said “Cream Ale” on the bottle. I haven’t had it in YEARS, so I can’t speak to any changes in formulation or packaging.

Piqued my curiosity...I remembered having Spotted Cow many years ago when my brother sent me some 12oz bottles. Turns out it was about a month shy of ten years ago, November of 2010:

I personally find that Mosaic changes more over time than most varietals (although Citra comes close). So one experience with it may yield lush tropical fruit, while an older can with the same hop might come across quite dank and herbal. That might partially explain why you tend to go back and forth on it; I'm much the same.

I agree with the earlier response, as well: New Glarus fruited sours are delicious, but they're definitely light on beer / heavy on fruit. I would compare/contrast them to Allagash, where the fruited Coolships are still very, very funky and sour, with the fruit adding depth but not quite taking over.

It's not quite the same as the dynamic between Lindeman's and Cantillon or Drie Fonteinen, but it's the same kind of dynamic: one is sweeter and fruitier, the other(s) drier, funkier, more sour. Neither is wrong, exactly; it just depends on what you're seeking.

(And this is where Wisconsinites march upon my home with torches for kinda-sorta-but-not-really comparing New Glarus to Lindeman's. :grinning:)

Completely agree, I’ve had some mosaic beers that were very fruity and others cat pissy, same hop different results. It’s probably my favorite hop and my least favorite, depends on which flavor you get.

I felt like a jerk saying they weren't really beer, as it seems the NG sours are quite popular. I'm just sitting over here, clutching my unfruited saisons, hissing at the masses and their kettle sours. But these are absolutely the beers I'd show up with at my "I don't like beer but some of those sour ones are ok" friends' houses. And they'd love them.

The Lindeman's comparison is *exactly* what I thought of! I also thought this might be the start of the road that led us to exploding cans of slushy beers. Ouch.

Revision’s Citra Slam pours a hazy orange from the can, with a 1 cm cap of fine foam.
The aroma is sweet with pineapple noted.
The flavor includes orange, pineapple and a bit of mango. The hop bitterness is low to moderate.
The flavors persist in the finish.
    This is a flavorful brew.

I had my first Berliner Weiss last week, raspberry I believe, thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a hard time convincing my brain it was beer and not a malt beverage, if I had that blind I would have thought it a fruited lambic. Either would be great on a beach or pool beer as a break.

....appearance is a hazy reddish amber
..about a medium body with about the same for carbonation.
....aroma is bread, grain, malt, honey, and what strikes me as fruit but mostly peach. There is an odd plastic artificial aroma as well.
...taste is grain, malt, honey, but again a lot of the fruit/peach shows up. There is a bit of that wierd artificial plastic showing up that for some reason I connect to the fruit.
...it had a few positive attributes but in the end it was a fail for me. I liked parts of it but not all parts[IMG]

Cheezus. This thing is ... something special. Blind/live review posted over on the BIF thread.

My final guess: this is clearly a fruited IPA, between 7-8.5% ABV. I'm thinking blueberries, primarily because of the color, but it's definitely fruited. Lacking that sharp berry tartness (ruling out blackberries). I wouldn't be surprised if there's coconut added, and I'm expecting lactose, possibly flaked oats.

The bright herbal nature of the hops (think: Citra or Galaxy) makes the fruit stand out less - but also clearly establishes this as an IPA. It's not sour, which one might guess on the nose alone.

That's about what I've got: fairly sweet, yet bitter and herbal (kind of reminds me of certain liqueurs in that regard), fruity, but not explicitly berry. I've still got to think blueberries because of the color, but I wonder if more coloring was added, because for that kind of purple, you'd think a ton of berries are in the mix, and it just doesn't stand out like that.

Aaaaaaaand: Vitamin Sea / Equilibrium Two Tickets to Pellet Ice, an 8% IIPA with toasted coconut, lime, and blue spirulina, and hopped with Galaxy, Sabro, and BRU-1.

Wow! Let's go to the score sheet:

-Nailed the IIPA, the ABV, and the use of an herbal hop (I explicitly called out Galaxy).
-I'm not familiar enough with Sabro and BRU-1 (although I've had them both), but IIRC, Sabro would likely contribute to the herbal nature of the hop tones.
-Called the coconut; completely missed the lime zest. (Even after knowing it's there, I really don't get lime.)
-Whiffed on my blueberry guess, but I figured something else was also in play on the coloration: blue spirulina! Not something I could possibly have specifically identified by taste. To be fair to myself, I did point out that it was really lacking in berry flavor.
-No indication that oats, wheat, or lactose were used, but I'm still fairly confident that's the case - at least with the lactose.

So, final thoughts to review to style? As though there is a blue spirulina IIPA style?

    1) They nailed their goal of creating a unique tropical drink. I could absolutely imagine crushing this on the Atlantic shores of Spain before and after Sangria.
    2) The herbal hops do not complement the rest of the beer. Something sweeter and fruitier (citrus/tropical) would have been much nicer.
    3) The lime zest is lost, and the toasted coconut a mere accent. The latter makes sense; the former is bewildering. Lime zest is strong, sour, and bitter; you'd think I would have picked up on that.
    4) Super smooth and drinkable. Not much of an IPA. In fact, it's just enough of an IPA that people who hate IPAs will still hate this (single data point: my partner hates this), but it's not enough of an IPA that IPA lovers will crush it, either.

Final takeaway: @WunderLlama freaking nailed the concept of a mystery beer! This is the exact opposite tack @ovaltine took (who sent a BSPA with pears, if you missed it; delicious, hard to pin down blind, and very straight forward). This is a crazy, crazy, inventive, creative beer, with ingredients you could never 100% guess, and an appearance more suited for a science fiction show.

I love it when I'm this confused going into a beer review - and all things considered, I think I did pretty well.

Others have already weighed in, but it's probably best to think of the beer as not brewed to be a particular style. It isn't a cream ale or a “saison.” It just is what it is. The recipe was invented when the brewer was inspired by the idea of German immigrants brewing "farmhouse" beers in Wisconsin in the past. It's made with a Kolsch yeast. It used to have corn in it, but probably not anymore.

Time for my new mystery beer from @Coronaeus. Been somewhat sickly this week so this is actually the first beer of his I have opened.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

A: Beer pour a dark brownish black similar to a cola. Small creamy heady at first pour that quickly disappears after pouring. Not much lacing while drinking but overall looks like a typical stout.

S: Sweet aromas up front and center. This beer has a nice chocolate cake like smell to it. Also getting a touch of a nutty smell, maybe peanuts or almonds. No real booze scent present. Nice beer on the nose.

T: Taste is similar to the nose. However, the nuttiness seems to be more present instead of the cake like fragrance. Unsure on the ABV as there is not much booze burn going on here.

M: Very smooth drinker. The mouthfeel is thick but not cloying. Really nice balance here. ABV seems lower as there isn't much aftertaste. Sweet chocolate and nuts linger about afterwards with no hint of ABV.

O: Nice dessert style beer. Really solid thick mouthfeel with a birthday cake aftertaste. Would be better if there was a touch more alcohol in the beer or maybe a barrel aged version. All in all, this is a sweet milk chocolate tasting beer. Would drink this one again easily.

    And now the reveal

Really nice beer. Would have been outstand with some barrel-aging go on but good beer regardless.

...has about medium carbonation with a thin body
..aroma is heavy on citrus peel followed by citrus fruit. Orange juice, earthy hops
...taste is again heavy on citrus peel then some fruit. Sweet sugary Orange juice with some earthy hops. There's a citrus peel, hop bitterness that dominates and lingers a long time.
Overall this was excellent considering its a low abv beer.
