Not really, it's legal for breweries to ship between each other. If anything since the beer was already on the east coast-ish, they should have asked Alpine to fill out the proper paperwork and pay whatever associated fee, then made the delievery. Saves FedEx the cost of shipping the kegs all the way back.

And, what, exactly does FedEx have to lose moreso than Alpine? They ship bottles of beer illegally and against their own policy for people all the time. There's no massive crackdown on it as jtmarty above states. It's ok for him to do it, but not a brewery? Even when the container being shipped is 1,000+ times more stable and secure?!

As far as the AB problem, that's AB's issue since they were the shipper but it stuck Alpine with the fallout. Lesson there is big corporations are a pain in the ass to deal with.

I think you're missing the point. The fact that they didn't do as you recommended suggests they were worried about something more than a technicality. What? I don't know, I'm not in the shipping business. Maybe it violates three tier laws since they're a brewery.

A multi billion dollar corporation vs. a single keg of beer from a small brewery.

Boohoo, Alpine shipped a keg, decided not to follow protocol, and subsequently weren't given an exception to the rules. Cry me a river.

Full kegs are legal to ship without any paperwork? I have a hard time believing that given all the red tape involved in alcohol laws and distribution. Are there any sources to back that up?

No, I love Alpine, and again that's beside the point.

This is funny coming from the same brewery that gets mad when you ask them for an exception to the bottle/growler limit. Not that I ever have, but they always mention NO EXCEPTIONS ?@(#*! in their emails/FB posts.

Three Tier law is in effect for distribution to the people. As it was stated, there aren't restrictions for brewery-brewery.

Again, what does Fed Ex have to lose? They're not violating federal law, as stated above. There was a more ambical solution, such as all fed ex locations having all paperwork (or .pdf's they can print out on demand). The only thing FedEx lost out on is shipping all the kegs back to Alpine, just costing them money and that's fucking stupid since it's an internal law, and not federal law, that was broken. Instead of it being a learning expierence for all with a positive solution, they went the dumb route.

Actually, I'm curious about this: has any private individual on here shipped kegs? My buddies and I were interested in procuring a few 5 gallons from out East, but have been a bit held up on the shipping logistics.

i'd agree that FedEx probably could have found a better solution than returning the kegs but the whole thing reads like, "don't you know who WE are?!?"

you'd think alpine would be well aware of the paperwork associated with such a shipment but i can't say that the oversight is terribly surprising.

Alpine absolutely rules with their hoppy offerings but i so wish they would bring someone in with a business sense to help them organize/streamline their operations.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for (as they actually drove it up there themselves), but this happened:
