You know, you're pretty funny Tommy.

(Hell, I don't like Oktos brewed outside Bavaria, let alone some new mock-style )

I wonder what peppers and sausage would taste like with Knackwurst?

I'll have to try Capital and Millstream. I thought Schwandtoberfest was too watery. I agree and thought Surly was particularly good this year. Brewed to traditional festbier style. Other personal favorites this year are Breckenridge and Great Lakes if you've had those.

I have to get hold of the Jack's Abby and Sly Fox offerings.. I keep reading about how incredibly solid both O'fests are and somehow or another I have never had either...perhaps next year...

In MA they finally canned their pale Oktoberfest as well, labeled "Munich-Style Festbier".

My beer guy told me to expect to see it in NJ this week. I'm really looking forward to it.

I had an odd experience this evening. Went to a brewery while on a getaway. I ordered their Octoberfest. I took one drink and believed it to be a pumpkin beer. I told the waiter and he said, ‘our Octoberfest has a pumpkin and cinnamon flavor to it’.

A manager came over with another beer that he verified came from the Octoberfest keg and it was the same beer as before. I just accepted the beer and didn’t make a fuss.

A friend and fellow BA’er had the beer less than 30 days ago and confirmed it was a straight forward Ofest beer.

I'd have traded it in on something else -- and hoped they didn't take creative license on that style.

A way I have heard other breweries react to the "Oc(k)toberfest" and "Kölsch" terms being improperly used is that "Pilsner" refers to Pilsen, a town in Austria-Hungary, not Germany (or Prussia). If German breweries are going to misappropriate the name of another town in another country for their beer, they have lost their right to demand that other countries not use the term "Oktoberfest" or "Kolsch" for their beers.:beers:

    Pilsen is where?

(I think this is where Otter leans in and says, "Let him go, he's on a roll.")

He's intentionally referring to the past, not the present.
Tell those brewers, "Nice try." I don't think they should even try to get into that hornets' nest, if the desired result is a justification for using different protected or trademarked terms. It seems very juvenile on their end. The complicated identity, cultural and language issues in the Czech Republic shouldn't be treated lightly. I get their logic though. While there are some similarities, just keep in mind a difference - in this case, the Germans aren't using a Czech word for their beer, and they aren't using a word for a style of beer in the Czech Republic. They're using a German word that's a reference to the beer that essentially started it all. In this case, the trademarked terms were: "Pilsner Urquell," "Pilsner Bier" and "Plezensky Prazdroj." Others used the word Pilsner, but only one could be the "Original Pilsner." I'm not saying that I like it though. Either way, it seemed to work out OK for Pilsner Urquell in the end. There's no need to point out that there wasn't a "Germany" or Czech Republic in 1842, cause you know that.

But they don’t use the word “Pilsner” in the Czech Republic for other Pilsners there. They call them pale lagers.

But I suppose that’s a cultural thing there out of respect for the original?

Others calling their beers Pilsner/Pilsener was also out of respect for the original. Damned if you do...

I got this explanation from the fine folks at Metropolitan Brwg.
It is not merely my interpretation.
Is the European Economic Union going to file a trademark violation complaint against any or all U.S. breweries offering a "Kölsch" beer?
