Hello fellow beer drinkers!! Got a couple questions about this awesome beer. I found a 4 pack with a born on date of Oct '19. 1. Is the beer still good and 2) how long will it be good for? I know Bourbon County by Goose Island is good for at least 3 yrs after the born on date. Any responses would be greatly appreciated

Definitely still good. Imperial barrel-aged stouts will be good for awhile, though you may want to jump on it soon as the maple and coffee character in that particular beer may fall off after a bit. I think it should be very well-rounded at its current one-year mark.

True, but IME, stouts and particularly big stouts like that tend to age well, and are even at their prime at about a year old.

Should be good to drink, OP.

I just had a 2017 the other day and it is still great!

A one year old CBS will still be a very tasty beer but as @Scotchboy mentioned the flavor additions (i.e., coffee, chocolate) and the maple syrup flavors imparted by the barrels will be a bit diminished vs. a fresher bottle.

Still a worthy purchase in my opinion.

    Cheers!

I can confirm it is still tasty. I drank one about a week or two ago. I will say the maple is a little muted to what it once was, but definitely still present. As people stated a live adjuncts will fade with time. Enjoy!

I like how the maple begins to fade as the beer gets older. I many who disagree

Even fresh the CBS was lacking in the maple.

Dale, for my last purchase of CBS (last year) the maple syrup aspect was muted but in prior batches I picked up a lot of maple syrup (too much for my palate).

As I discussed it in my NBS post:

    "Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a complex combination of coffee, cocoa, vanilla,… flavors. There is a moderate bitterness. There is nothing specifically that ‘says’ maple syrup to me and frankly that is A-OK with me. There is no perceptible alcohol ‘heat’ with this beer.

I really, really liked the CBS I purchased last year:

I enjoyed it too, but it tasted like KBS. Granted I’ve only had one bomber, but there wasn’t a bit of maple in that beer. Not only muted but none at all.

That is bizarre, the old bomber and even the new four packs have all had noticeable maple to me. Not like a dessert stout or anything but the maple is very noticeable from the times I’ve had it. Could it really vary that much bottle to bottle? Maybe could’ve been something you drank or ate before it?

Don’t know, but I’d assume maple would be fairly easy to pick up on. But I’ve tried it twice in bombers and neither one showed any maple.

Me, I would not buy an aged CBS unless the price was significantly reduced.

These responses strangely mirror my experiences. I bought two CBS bombers in 2017 and drinking it fresh couldn't detect any maple; it was almost indistinguishable from KBS. But after sitting on the second one for a year the maple jumped forward. As a result I bought a four pack of 12 ouncers last year and the first one tasted fine.

Imo Founders varies noticeably from year to year and batch to batch. The KBS I bought in early 2019 was indistinguishable from Breakfast Stout, which isn't bad per se but with no barrel presence, but this year's version tastes much better.
