I was just busting balls/nitpicking history. No bias on either Mikkeller/Evil Twin here. I've brewed collaborations with both Mikkeller SD and Mikkeller NYC, while being employed by Evil Twin. Some really talented people passed through those breweries.

A great many memories from Rattle n Hum - I loved that place. I remember bailing on class a few times to make over there for Hill Farmstead events.

RnH was and remains my favorite bar ever, especially in NYC. I had a great time everytime I was in there. It was such a non-pretentious, non-judgey place. Didn’t matter if I sat at the bar or got a table. Everyone from the bartenders to the owners was awesome. I felt like a “regular” there very early in my times going there. Honestly, it’s kinda depressing that the place isn’t there anymore and how long it’s been since it’s/my real heyday.

Man this thread is becoming a sort of NYC "Controversial Opinions" thread! But I have to say RnH (RIP) was never a top spot for me. Don't get me wrong I had some great experiences there, especially the Founders event in early 2011 where I got to try not only CBS, but also Black Biscuit - which was a mega-want at the time. But overall the place just always lacked something for me personally. Maybe it was partly a function of living/working downtown. I lived in the west village at the time, and un-shockingly my favourite of the OG beer bars was Blind Tiger, despite it being a major pain in the ass to order at, and having probably the most inefficient bar set ups of all time.

This was pre-BA for me, but Rattle n Hum was the first craft bar I found in the city, kind of by accident. It was my first year living/teaching on the UWS and I ventured out to pick up Catan for a board game club at Compleat Strategist across the street. I wandered into RnH after and was really happy to find it! It was definitely dark, cavey, and kind of loud, but it was perfect for a wide-eyed, baby faced Florida man looking for a craft beer fix in fall 2013.

I like the Blind Tiger but that place was a bitch when it was busy. It was right near the best cheap falafels in the village though so that was always a plus. I like Mahmoun’s, but I was an Ali Baba guy (fight me).

Working in Midtown and commuting, I was fortunate to know Liam from when he was at Track’s in Penn Station. He tells me I have to come to this place where he was helping out with the tap list. We went there on a snowy mid-day and there was no one there. Liam proceeds to do a Black Ops 3-year vertical with us (a 1st for me at the time) and hands me an inventory list and asked me what I liked and what I thought would sell best. Very honored he’d think enough of me to ask that. We also met Joe who made it his job to feed me Jameson’s whenever I came in after that.

The thing I loved about it was that it was a dive bar dressed up as a craft bar. We’d go there to watch sports. I’d go there, even if it was just a beer or two, if my day sucked. I’d go there if I knew Krista was working (she was my favorite). I’d go there if a friend of mine wanted to meet somewhere “decent.”

Did it help that I worked a few Avenues away? Sure. I also did like The Ginger Man, but everyone there was in a suit or a button up and I would be that dirtbag still in my work clothes or a Snapcase shirt and jeans. RnH was just more my speed. I was instantly welcomed by other people by the bar even if I was alone (shout out to Kevin, wherever the fuck you are). I always knew at least one person working so that helped but I always left that place with a smile even if I didn’t remember the next day

That is a great way to remember a great bar

Speaking of craft bars dressed down as dive bars, have you made it uptown for dive bar or broadway dive (same ownership group?) Both are great spots, have super cool owners, and broadway dive consistently has one of the most stocked fridge selections of any bar/bottle shop.

I haven’t worked in Manhattan since March of ‘18 so I’m pretty much a novice to the NYC bar scene now. I went in back in January and went to Milk and Hops Chelsea and unfortunately most of the bartenders I knew were gone and the one I still talk to wasn’t there.

I was a big fan of Beer Culture too. Pete was always friendly and very generous. Place is tiny but the love there is evident. Miss going to both places.

I grew up on the UWS and spent lots of time at pretty much all the Dive bars, definitely agree on all points. I was closer to Dive 75 which didn’t have as consistently interesting a taplist as the ones further uptown, but I was always thrilled when my friends picked that over Gin Mill.

Thread is proof the Wilpons selling the Mets is the key turnaround to civilization after the first half of 2020.

also, what up my fellow 2005 sign up member jeppe @BierKonig. Always loved your beers (besides the shit bottle of cognac Jesus)

This sums up RnH so well. 2 of my buddies and I used to hang out at RnH east every so often after work as the wives allowed it. So many good memories of staying in the city late and then stumbling to my bus stop. @rozzom has to be one of those suit wearing assholes from Ginger Man.

That’s just it - I really don’t like gingerman at all and love dives. To me rnh wasn’t a dive. Hard to articulate the nuances but the whole vibe I just always found sort of....meh. Now BGH is a divey type of craft beer bar I could spend hours at

I dislike when American bars posture as soccer.... err football bars. Perhaps you had that issue with RnH.

Yeah maybe that’s it. It had this sort of football bar cum Irish bar cum bbq restaurant combo feel about it (for me). Blind Tiger and Spuyten were my go to OG spots. Also Jimmys 43 and the other place in east village I’m blanking on. Not DBA (altho there too) but another one. It’ll come to me. Old rabbit club was another spot I liked. Went to RNH occasionally. rarely went to gingerman
