Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Sorry, my view of the British Isles is heavily skewed by QI, IT Crowd and other TV from that area. Also, trying to lighten the mood.

I'm sorry, but this just shows how far the Overton window has shifted.

The Republican Party is so far to the right, bordering on fascism, that someone like Biden is seen as a "socialist" when he would be considered a conservative in most other countries, and someone like Bernie Sanders or AOC (people who we would most generously consider as "progressives" or "moderate liberal" in most other places) are seen as full-flown communists.

The fact that The Economist, a magazine that we can consider centrist on most matters if not neo-liberal, openly endorsed Joe Biden as President says it all.

And make no mistake, the Republican Party is bordering on fascism. Donald Trump sending in federal agents to round up peaceful protestors in places like Portland (while simultaneously ignoring places like Charlottesville) was a step towards fascism. Donald Trump tear-gassing peaceful protestors in Lafayette Park to get a photo op in front of a church was a step towards fascism.

Robert Paxton, a historian whose focus is on fascism, defined it as "a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion."

Now enlighten me how that doesn't fit Trump's campaign.

"community decline, humiliation or victimhood" - What is Make America Great Again if not that?

"compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity" - How else to define a group of people that continue to support a person despite scandal after scandal after scandal after scandal showing that he does not care for the American people? How else to describe the worship of a person who, when countless evidence is presented of his wrongs, is met with "fake news"?

"in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants" - Charlottesville. Kenosha. Pizzagate. The group that attempted to run off a Biden campaign bus in Texas. I could go on.

"working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites" - Aka, the Republican Party

"abandons democratic liberties" - Trump just went on air and advocated for "blood in the streets" because of the prospect of him losing the 2020 election, and has refused to acknowledge the possibility of him relieving power should he lose.

"with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion." - Again, Charlottesville. Kenosha. Portland. Michigan (the attempted kidnapping of the Michigan governor). The attempted bombing of Schiff, Pelosi, AOC, etc.

Everyone thinks that fascism just decides to announce itself and take over in a day. ****** was popular in Germany (35% of the vote) before he even committed the Reichstag fire and then became a dictator.

Even Vladimir Putin, a man who can all agree is a dictator in all but name, has an "election" so that he can claim he won by the popular vote (and he usually does, by 107% of possible votes).

If Trump loves democracy so much, then why are his favorite leaders Putin and Xie and Kim Jon-Un, people who he admired for their ability to jail any reporter who dared report negatively on them? Why have all his actions been towards establishing a rule for him and him alone? Why have all his attempts been at destabilizing our democracy and promoting right-wing aggression?

I'm sorry, but it's plain as day. This guy would love to be a fascist ruler. Yet somehow, the fact that he's taken all the steps except by declaring himself "dictator" means he can't be fascist yet the likes of Ilhan Omar and AOC are seen as "dangerous leftist" even though all their plans and rhetoric have been at supporting our democracy.

And moving on to "leftists", this has to be such a strawman. Who on the Democrat party actually supports things like transferring the means of production from the private to the public sector, aka, what socialism actually is? No one.

Bernie, AOC, and whatever "leftist" boogeyman out there simply want social safety nets for the people, like what every other sane country in Europe and Asia has. Why is improving the lives of the American people a "dangerous leftist" thing?

And we want to talk about "forcible suppression of the opposition", then I don't see how your worry is that Democrats are a bigger threat to democracy than Republicans. The Democrats did not support driving a Trump campaign bus off the road in Texas like the Republicans did. The Democrats have not bombarded the Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia state offices, threatening them and demanding they stop counting votes. The Democrats have not been the ones passing laws designed at voter suppression (like Texas' one ballot box per county). The Democrats were not the ones attempting to completely dismantle the USPS or prevent mail-in ballots from coming in. And that's not even getting into how the likes of John Kasich and Jeff Flake (capital C conservatives) got ostracized by the Republican Party and are now speaking at the DNC and endorsing Joe Biden for president.

The Democratic Party has openly denounced violence caused by the alleged "antifa" movement. Where are the Republicans that have denounced the violence that Neo-****es, sorry, "alt-right", caused? Certainly not from the President who says to "stand by" with them.

Just look at the difference in how Biden and Trump are responding to the election. Biden is advocating for ALL VOTES to be counted, even if it means places like Arizona and North Carolina stays red. Trump is demanding that Pennsylvania and Georgia stop counting while Arizona keeps counting, and if that fails, to essentially defy the Electorate and demand either faithless electors, "blood on the streets" or just staying in power.

That isn't "boorish, bag of dicks" behavior that you keep trying to couch Trump as. That's full-blown dictator/fascist behavior.

Like seriously, why are you practically condoning Trump's reprehensible, vile, anti-democratic behavior? Why this enlightened centrist "both sides"? Why the continual "whataboutisms" that don't actually address the key points here?

Am I the only one that thinks this is crazy?

I'm appalled at some of the replies too. Ironically, OP seems more tolerant than pretty much everyone here.

For the record, I'm not from the US but lived there for 10 years. I think Trump is a disgrace and would have happily voted for Biden if I could. However, Jesus, some of you are way too angry (to say the least).

Show of hands: How many here have changed their political stance based on something that they have read in this thread.

It's not how it works. You are not going to convince anyone. For those that are spewing, just stop. It's mostly the same BS that's been rehashed a million times before. We've seen it all from both sides. Please stop.

Now - What are you drinking this weekend? I'm looking forward to a Two Hearted after work.

People have good reason to be angry. No matter who ultimately prevails in this election (which is, by all reliable accounts, being processed fairly, honestly, and legally, despite the bizarre and baseless claims some have been making), it’s now clear that almost half of the country is OK with abandoning the core principles that have held this democracy together for almost 250 years, as flawed as it is. Evidently years of disinformation have truly taken their toll. For many of us it’s heartbreaking to be faced with this reality, even if it isn’t entirely surprising. Some differences just can’t be reconciled.

I think it's all a marketing scheme. They're only alienating 28% of their locals who voted for Trump in Mercer county while holding themselves out as a haven for the vast majority of their locals who already agree with their views.

    Brilliant !

Ah... pretty sure there was no Google when I first learned of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in "Current Events" in junior high. (I'd look it up and cite the founding date, but, apparently some find that annoying - me, I kinda like a factual source when a claim is made.)

I agree (not sure the ACLU would) - but, of course, "We don't serve Fascists" is more hyperbole than an actual business plan, since there is no evidence (yet?) of them actually refusing to sell beer to a MAGA-hatted or swastika-tattoed customer.

My comment re: the Civil Rights Act was directed at the OP's statement, repeated by at least one other poster, that they "...support a private business's right to deny service to any individual for any reason." That's not a "right" according to Federal and many states' laws.

I really don’t get why everything has to be so politically driven, especially in business. I mean, don’t like tax hikes, but you don’t see me pissing everyone else off about it.

I'm afraid not. And on top of that, you're not invited to the pro-Trump breweries either! Tough luck, but it sounds like you're enough of an individualist to bootstrap your way out of it

How long until this story gets picked up by Fox and Sinclair and broadcast endlessly until their viewers believe it's indicative of a pattern despite the fact that 99.9999999% of breweries that are owned by very passionate liberals are probably not doing this?

I concur, and there have been cases about businesses denying service because of customers’ sexual orientation, for example, that I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) have been ruled against the businesses. Some bakery and Hobby Lobby come immediately to mind.

As for what position the ACLU would take, they’d probably interpret this broadly as a violation of these customers’ rights. But I’ve been an ACLU supporter for years and, based on the thousands of emails and texts they send me, I suspect this is pretty far down on the list of cases they’d choose to take up.
