Glad you enjoyed it! I needed to re-read the writing on the bottle as I had the impression of barrel aging, but it isn’t. Just quite good.

That said, I am *really* hoping that they put some of that in some barrels. Time will tell.

I was in PA yesterday, packmuling for my wife at one of the malls, and decided to stop at a local beer store. I picked up some Yard's Brawler and a 6 pack of Penn Brewery's St. Nikolaus Bock.
    From the brewery:
Alcohol content: 6.5% ABV , OG/plato: 15, FG/plato: 3.5, IBUs: 25, Hops: Perle, Malt: Two-row, Munich, Chocolate, Carahell, Caramel, Carafa

    From the bottle:
Rich, dark and full bodied, because it's brewed just like the beers are brewed in Germany. With a blend of roasted barley malt and Bavarian Hallertau hops.
website says Perle, bottle says Hallertau. Odd

    Very disappointing :slight_frown:
The beer looks lovely, but it goes downhill quickly after that.
A faint roasted malts and weak coffee aroma, a moderately malty taste with some weak coffee, toast, and some sort of odd sweetness that I couldn't pin down. The aftertaste followed the main flavors, but also left a syrupy coating on my tongue. No hops, no bite, no enjoyment.
Not a drain pour, but definitely not a repeat purchase.

TBH, this is my own fault. I broke my rule against buying undated beer and I really have no idea whether or not this is last year's batch. My bottles have "021 020" (followed by unreadable numbers) in black ink on a a brown bottle, apparently Penn Brewery only puts BB dates on the outside of cases.

That's really weird. It showed up as the "proper" picture of the beer when I first read the post. Now, it shows up as a software edit screen, or something similar. But, if you click on the image, it links to the image on postimage, and if you then click on that to enlarge it, the proper image now shows up.

    As I said, weird.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Deciduous Brewing Company glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very attractive pink, with a finger plus off white head with pinkish hues that leaves really thin streaks of lace, with solid retention. 4.75

Smell strawberry, raspberry, mango, kiwi, and vanilla. 4.25

Taste follows strawberry, kiwi, mango, raspberry, and vanilla. 4

Mouthfeel is medium, plenty carbonation, a tad sticky but not dry, and at 5.5% ABV loaded with flavor but easy drinking. 4.25

Overall I really like this, not a huge fan of kiwi and I am getting a good amount of that flavor personally. Nice stuff. 4.25

Some other people have mentioned that postimage is apparently having some issues right now, that probably has something to do with it. I may try imgur instead. As for the backdrop, I wasn't having today's beers at home.

Not sure how they use them in stouts, but when I used to make homemade vanilla extract, I just used dried beans, sliced them and used them like that.
Beanilla is awesome! I used to order all my beans from them.

Getting Away a New England Style IPA from Untied Brewing in New Providence NJ. Untied does not say what the grain bill is. The hops used are Citra, Galaxy and Sabre. This beer is heavily dry hopped. Getting Away looks as one expects a NEIPA. There is a pure white head and a hazy body. The aroma is powerful some malt and a lot of fruit. The taste follows the aroma but is a it more balanced. The mouthfeel is full and finish is fruity with tangerine leading the way. Overall an excellent refreshing beer. Untied Brewing is less than 2 years old and is brewing one fine beer after an other. Good for them lucky for me.

Pannepot Reserva 2017 - Chateau-Neuf du Pape, a Belgian Strong Ale aged in red wine barrels from Belgian brewer De Struise (10% ABV).

Pours a dark brown coloration with a small, fizzy head. Smells of caramel malt, dark chocolate and dark and red fruits, with notes of plum, blackberry and redcurrant, as well as a distinct, quite tannic, musty/earthy oak presence.

Taste is an excellent balance of caramel malt, strong dark/red fruits, with notes of raisin, fig, plum, blackberry and redcurrant and distinct barrel notes of tannic, musty and earthy oak, as well as lighter dark/bitter chocolate and just a hint of spices, with accents of aniseed, clove and cinnamon, as well as a mild underlying tartness. Finishes with a light tartness and sweetness, with some dark/red fruit, tannic oak and spicy accents lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.

A very complex and interesting Belgian Strong Ale with a distinct, quite vinous character that shows itself through a mild tartness, strong tannic and musty oak, as well as red fruit notes, which complement the darker fruits from the rich malts rather nicely, which also add some caramel and chocolate accents, while the yeast brings some hints of estery spice. There really is an excellent overall balance to everything that's going on here, with the sweet, fruity, tannic and spicy notes all harmonizing together very nicely and forming a very deep and complex brew that never becomes too syruppy sweet or boozy, while still feeling rather rich and satisfying.

A new to me brewery, and apparently a new to all of us beer - Wide Awake Brewing Company, Summerville, SC’s “Palmetto Malt SMASH”, a blond ale brewed with local SC grown barley, 5.1% abv, 20 IBUs:

Deep gold pour at 54 degrees; excellent clarity; rocky one finger of white foam; poor cap retention, no ring, no lace. Floral hop nose, some spicy aromas as beer warms. Clove, coriander up front; light lemony aftertaste; semi sweet grain bill. Medium light body, moderate minus carbonation. Overall, a perfectly fine/average blonde ale; nothing off/putting, just a step above bland.

    3.75 | 3.5 | 3.5 | 3.5 | 3.5
Score: 3.52 rDev 0%. I added beer to database.

Today is a bit warmer than yesterday, but quite blustery here in south-eastern MN. So, I'm going with another malty beer.

Drastic Measures Brewing Acclimated Imperial Brown
    ABV: 8.3%
    IBU: 75

Drastic Measures is a MN brewer, located in the town of Wadena (for fans of the Coen Brothers, that is about half way between Brainerd and Fargo).

The brewers notes (via Untappd) say, "A malty, hoppy, and bitter imperial brown ale. Why not."

Deep, dark brown body with heavy carbonation visible only with a back-light. Tall, thick, creamy and frothy tan head with excellent retention. Nice stringy lacing as the head does recede.

Roasted aroma. Nutty, smokey, and roasty.

Initially, the taste is roasted malts and smooth. By the middle, the bitterness begins and grows well into the finish and aftertaste, leaving a bitter and roasty flavor. With the second sip, the bitterness is now hitting at the beginning as well. Underneath the bitterness, if I concentrate, I can detect more of the typical brown ale flavors of caramel, with even a bit of sweetness well hidden. The alcohol is not evident at all in aroma, flavor, or in any part of the aftertaste, but it does show up in in the level of buzz.

Overall, this beer starts out with a very nice look, and OK aroma, and decent flavor, however the flavor is overwhelmed by the high level of bitter hops. Personally, I don't think this combination works very well. It's not a bad beer, but it is definitely for fans of bitter malty beer.

As I posted at the beginning, the brewers notes say, "A malty, hoppy, and bitter imperial brown ale. Why not."

A better question might be "Why?"

This may be better titled Might-as-well-be a New Beer...

I just went to post the review and saw that I had actually already rated it a year-and-a-half ago, with no review but with the notation that I'd had it on draught at Big Fatty's. I've had a lot of beer on draught at Big Fatty's (and it shows!) but I have no recollection whatsoever of ever having seen Deciduous on tap there, let alone this one. Still, I suppose I have to expect this to happen more and more as I get older and drink all these relatively-high abv beverages. Anyway, enough with the excuses...

Early Signs, a double IPA with Galaxy, Citra and Enigma, from Deciduous Brewing Co. in Newmarket, NH

From a 16oz can, undated, purchased at the brewery 11/12/20. Served in an IPA glass.

Pours a cloudy, opaque, milky-orange colour with two fingers of soft, fluffy foam. Retention is pretty good, leaving a thick, creamy collar and wads of foamy lacing. Looks to be the real deal.

Aroma is yeasty-fruity, bready, mellow. Reminiscent of a thick slab of white bread with marmalade.

Taste does a 180° to the nose being shockingly sharp and pithy - the nose murmurs soft, comforting nothings in your ears, then the taste snaps its fingers under your nose and flicks you in the balls. Bitter grapefruit juice, sour lemon and tart, green gooseberry, only with the flavour dial cranked way up high. Really nice, bright citrusy bitterness with an impeccably clean finish.

Feel is clean and quenching, juicy as all get out, medium bodied with bright, almost aggressive carbonation. Super-easy drinking with no booziness at all.

Overall, wow, that was a kick-ass great DIPA! I'm going to have another and fixing supper be damned.
