Hey that just means you did a good job.

Hmm, maybe a Schwarzbier and Czech Dark Lager would be a better comparison side by side.

They’d both be cleaner than a stout would be.

That would be a good idea for a New Beer Weekend post.

Spoiler alert: I will be posting a wet hopped beer side-by-side tasting tomorrow in NBW.

    Cheers!

I like “barrel-aged” beers like innis & gunn beer that use chips instead of the actual barrel because i like the beer to shine, not the barrel.

The most ultimate troll post I've ever seen on BA.

    Congrats.

Although I don’t drink Innis & Gunn, I can agree that a lot of these heavily barreled beers lose a lot of depth and unique qualities. Especially ones (no disrespect to Jackie O’s) that boast 18+ months of aging. Oak is great for rounding out austere flavors, but if you’re already putting a balanced boozy beer in it, many of them come out tasting same-same-y.

I got one for this thread:

The least understood beer style for American breweries is Berliner Weisse.

Yup, fruit puree and lactose do not belong in a Berliner Weisse, same with Gose, really. Do whatever you want, but call them Fruited Sour Ales, for god's sake.

My favorite local brewery has had a schwarzbier (4.7%) on tap for a while now and I get at least one pint of it every time I stop in. I'm hoping they make it a regular beer for them, but I'm not counting on it. Seems like I'm in the minority because apparently there aren't many people looking for lower ABV dark beers.

I wish there was a separate fruited sour style category on BA. I always have a hard time when I'm trying to add a fruited sour ale. Some of the ones I've had aren't Goses, aren't Wild Ales and aren't Berliner Weisses. Guess I could use fruit/field beer but that doesn't seem appropriate since it's not part of the Wild/Sour beer category.

Yes, this style is sorely needed and this has been discussed at great length before. It will be added when the long-awaited style update finally arrives.

We kind of liberally use style names here in the US.

A New England IPA has the style name “IPA” but it’s not even bitter.

In the early 70s, that was true, maybe less so now. My old roommate and I picked up a sixer of BerlinerWeisse Schultheiss. We poured it into a glass. It was cloudy, and somewhat sour. We complained to the liquor store clerk, and he was as clueless as we were. A year or so later, we purchased a Michael Jackson beer book that described BerlinerWeisse to us. Mystery solved. My least understood style nowadays is Lahti. I drank one at the new Moriches Field brewery. It had "fest' in the name, so I had made an assumption about what I was getting. It was only when I got home and read the BA description that I realized what I had been drinking.

I’ve worked for a couple of breweries and this isn’t something new but, code dating. NEEDED!!....with the popularity of fragile styles ie NEIPA and such, it’s essential to the customer. A average 4pk of this stuff cost at least 16 bucks a unit. Nothing ruins a brewery faster than when someone get burnt on a old beer without a date.

I just got back from grocery shopping at my local Wegmans supermarket and I strolled through the beer section to see if Genesee Schwarzbier has arrived yet.

It was not there but maybe it will be next week?

BerlinerWeisse, I'm sure, is fairly well understood. That a style name is used incorrectly, commercially to describe beer isn't unprecedented. Caveat Emptor. Take a look at Pilsener. Lite Beer (miller) was described as a Pilsener! Other examples abound. US commercial bock beers were mostly tinted, weakly flavored products (anybody remember Lucky Bock?). US "ales" of the 70s were mostly brewed with lager yeast, and many (some exceptions) weren't easily distinguished from standard lager.
