Hi guys, I have just started my first germination to be malted. I bought ethiopian "black barley" instead of "brewers barley" (by mistake) for my first batch of beer. I'm studying so this is my first experiment.

I wanted to know if anyone has made a simple larger with only black barley. Should I start again and get the standard strain or push on with the black barley? How will it taste in comparison?

    Thanks! JP

It's unusual to find a homebrewer who also malts the grain for the beer to be brewed. My best recommendation is if you've gotten this far, keep going as a learning exercise.

I'm also going to recommend to the mods that this thread be moved to the Homebrewing forum where the BA members mostly reside who can best reply to your question.

    P. S. Welcome to the BA site, JP. It sounds like you likely will spend some time in the Homebrewing forum while on the site, so also welcome to that forum. Explore everything on the site when you can.

I made a larger with that barley actually. It’s wasn’t 100% more like 40%. Skagit Valley malting sells it. Crazy that malt that color doesn’t translate to any color in the beer!

it was a good beer. Kinda of a rustic “Landbier” type of lager.

If you haven't yet done so, let me be the first to recommend that you read HowToBrew.com by John Palmer. It's free to read the first edition online with this link, or the 4th edition isn't very expensive (usually around $15) and gives you something to mark up with highlights, etc. It will give you a very good understanding of the 'whats' and 'whys' of the brewing process. Feel free to come here with questions when you need to.

Doing a search of this forum is another way to answer questions. Almost every topic has been discussed here over the years.
