What’s the down low on lagers in NYC? Moving to NY soon and am very intrigued by what seems like a plethora of pils. I’ve dabbled in a few bit haven’t got the full spread. How would y’all rank them?

Threes has been the best for me so far. I’ve had maybe 5 of their offerings including quite a good amount of vliet and I just love them.

Grimm Anthos was really good and looking forward to having the rest of their rotational lagers.

Interboro bushburg was nice but I’d rank it maybe a notch below threes and Grimm. Will revisit it.

Industrial arts metric is bangin’ AF and would rank it in the top tier.

Mikkeller NYC say hey sally was actually slept on - it was super good, but that’s out of the picture now.

folksbier OBL was just perfect. Looking forward to having more of that as well as trying their Pilsner.

Very intrigued by the greenhouse pils/lager series coming out of Evil Twin. Have yet to try any.

Singlecut? They were early to the lager game. (Anyone remember Lagrrr?). When i used to frequent singlecut though I wasn’t going for lagers at that time. How are they now? Looks like they retired 19-33 for a new flagship? Looking forward to trying some.

Have not tried any from OH, finback, or transmitter but those are all on my list. Oh and of course trips to Suarez.

What did I miss? How would you rank them generally? Any suggestions.

I would put Threes at the top, with Folksbier right behind. I drink a ton of both. You can get Suarez shipped to you in NY. Between Threes, Folksbier, and Suarez, I don’t seem to venture that much further afield.

I did get a four pack of a new Evil Twin Pilsner (pink can) and it was super refreshing. Might get more of that.

Where are you moving to here? Lots of good bottle shops around, depending on the neighborhood. I’m in the St. Gambrinus, Gold Star, and Covenhoven triangle area and feel triply blessed.

Think you have it pretty well covered. Threes definitely the standout NYC-based option. I really like Folksbier but always wish they’d stuck more to their original focus. Suarez shipping is the non-local icing on the cake to make the most of until things get back to normal. I wouldn’t spend too much time on OH lagers.

I think OP knows more about NYC lagers than people that live in NYC.

Not sure what you're going for exactly - NYC brewers, NYS brewers, or anything on the shelf in NYC? List feels mainly like southern NYS brewed lager options in 16oz cans.

Here's my dumb take on lagers from the producers you mentioned and a few others around the NYC area. This is totally subjective and just a case of what I like. This isn't any baloney objective talk of high or low quality.

Threes - maybe my favorite all-around lager producer in NYC but I generally don't bother with them. Vliet being my favorite of their bunch despite it coming across as erratic to me (probably more due to me than the beer)... but it's also worth noting that Vliet is brewed for them by Industrial Arts.

Grimm - I essentially really liked the few I've had from them, but the price and lack of availability makes them completely impractical for me unfortunately.

Interboro - There have been exceptions but I basically have a serious dislike for their lagers. Sorry. Just a matter of my taste. Please slap me if you ever see me considering buying yet another one.

Industrial Arts - From my point of view, they know how to make lagers but I very rarely buy them. I'd take their lagers over their ales in a heartbeat. Metric is great but not worth the price for me. Their Landscape series is excellent but expensive and with limited availability. Add Vliet into the equation and they might be one of the most interesting lager brewers in NYS.

Mikkeller NYC - While they were around they were very hit or miss.

Folksbier - I'm certainly very alone in this, but the little I've had from them did not make me want to buy more.

Singlecut - Funny that you'd bring them up that way. It's mind boggling to think that when they started they tried to stand out from the pack by being lager-focused. I've barely had any lagers from them in recent years.

Other Half - Not worth the effort in obtaining them.

Finback - Don't think I've ever had a lager from them.

Suarez - For my tastes, the best lager brewer in the state. Lagers range from OK to fantastic, but when they get it right (like with Palatine), they really get it right. Price and availability impose the limitations.

KCBC - What I've had from them has been solid but not repeat purchase material.

Brooklyn - They'll be left out of every conversation like this but people should reconsider them. I find their lagers hit or miss.

Greenport - Hit or miss as well, but I tend to give them a shot. I just picked up a 4 pack of Haus Pils today. Fingers crossed.

Sixpoint - Despite the sustained respect for their lagers within their class on BA, I've never cared for any of them.

Gun Hill - Generally speaking I don't care for their lagers.

Barrier - I'd put their lagers in the pretty good category. I guess I waver here but am generally positive.

Flagship - I don't care for their lagers.

Sloop - I don't care for what little I've had.

Final thoughts: The problem with all of the above, is that even though it's a Fernsehpils, I'd generally rather buy Bitburger than most of the above. Note that this hasn't stopped me from continuing to challenge that idea (see Greenport purchase above).

After two cans from the 4 pack, my initial impression is that this current version of Haus Pils (it seems that the recipe isn't static) reminds me more of Palatine than any other lager from the area (besides Suarez). It's not Palatine, but it reminds me of it. Well done.

I don't like it as much as Palatine though.

My dude @Feaor tends to have strong opinions about lagers down this way.

The tldr is that they're available and your favorite brewery probably has them sitting around with no fuss.

I hear yah. Keep in mind that I haven't had much of this Haus Pils, so I clearly don't know it too well. To me, the two beers are playing with the same flavors and I feel like they are in the same game, but Palatine is a more cohesive and layered beer (even if that sounds like a contradiction) with better texture and better head, while Haus Pils is perhaps a bit more assertive. The clarity of Haus Pils was a really nice surprise. The things that make Palatine more enjoyable in this case are also the things that make it rise above most other Pilsners for me - so that's a high bar. Perhaps I'll drastically change my opinion in time, but the above was my knee-jerk reaction. Cheers.

Crickets in this thread. I expected more opinions (or at least someone taking issue with one of mine). The last time I was looking at the "local" section in a beer store with an eye to checking out what kind of product was being pumped out, the shelves were mainly IPAs and Pilsners.

Let me add - Big points off for no canning date stamp from Greenport.

I didn’t add anything because I think you guys covered everything already. All my favorites have already been listed. All the good German Pilsners are readily available in NY as well.

Agree on them being the best at lagers in NYC. Everything I've had from them has been great, especially in the Summer of ThreesDelivery I had. And who could forgot YORE. *chefs kiss* Amirite @fdonnelly? Shut up @jrnyc.

I like most of the lagers they put out. For the price I used to complain, but the more lager I drink the more enjoyment I get out of what Grimm does and the more I think they're worth the $$. I recently really enjoyed Cross Stitch, their Vienna lager.

Their lagers are drinking beers, not thinking beers, and are robust at parties where you want to drink something other than whatever shit your non-craft friends brought. Pils City was good over the summer. I'll slap you if I don't see you buying that and eating your words.

I want to make a joke about WilponBrewing2.0 but I'm sure I'd inadvertently break some Mets fan with horrible flashbacks.

True for everything they make according to our esteemed colleague and progenitor of #HazeGampsDrainPours.

I keep bitching about them making "pilsners" and adding things like Citra or lemon zest to them, so don't go drinking these thinking you're going to be finding Suarez or the like.

Availability? WHAT? They ship now. My bank account can attest to that. Quality makes it totally worth it, as do the eye rolls from my wife every few Tuesdays when another case arrives.

@algebeeric_topology loves him the shit out of some Sixpoint beers. Especially when Shane was there to hype them up for him as he put his lips on the glass of that sweet, sweet nectar.[/QUOTE]

You sir have 'won the lottery' to have such a loving wife if all that she does is "eye roll" at these transactions.

I do not know for certain but I am pretty sure I would suffer an 'accidental' death in the middle of my sleep from my wife in this instance.:grimacing:
