Wait, @Jsteez -- is this thread a sneaky means of collecting data about the heaviest-drinking professions? :joy:

For real -- thanks for starting this thread. It's interesting to see what people do for a living.

I work for Georg Fischer and sell pre-insulated piping for chill water and glycol systems. It doesn't sound sexy, but it's a great company and a sizable portion of my existing business is selling directly to breweries.

Nice! I'm a bit into health myself, as shouldn't be a big surprise to those who know what I'm drinkin'

Which carrier are you with? I have to quote an EPL policy today. Just curious... DM me if you wish

edit: Oh, I forgot the important part, it’s for a brewery! Might as well combine work with pleasure...

Retired now from career in science. When I was a grad student and homebrewer/ beeradvocate at UCSD (San Diego) in the early 70s, a homebrewer biochemist friend used his lab's biochem processing equipment to brew beer. The centrifuge was so efficient that there was not enough yeast in the bottled beer to generate carbonation. My old roommate's Astrophysics lab had a keg on tap (once they poured Andeker draft). Those were the days before strict Environment, Safety, and Health measures. And when good beer was a rare treat.

I currently work at a liquor store where I do a little buying, but mostly just grunt work. Before that, floor crew for the evening news: teleprompter, camera, floor directing, jib, often all at the same time.

I posted below about early (non compliant) lab experience. But the last 5 years of my career had a 50% Env, Safety, Health component. Hard to navigate the compliance portion as well as emphasize to the staff the basic principles that keep you safe.

You are completely correct....compliance is a moving target, especially in California. Working with a population like graduate students and postdocs is also a huge challenge since they constantly turn-over (only a 5 year time at our school) so it is a constant training environment.

You can have a safety program that "follows the rules" but doesn't guarantee a good result. BP had good safety record on paper but spilled oil in Alaska fields and blew up a refinery. You need people to take care, but you also need enforcement. I once had to shut down an experiment because of willful avoidance of rules.

Tenured College Professor in Germany these days. Started out as a state prosecutor (first trial, then moved into appellate) before burning out. Moved overseas to a think tank/research institute, then a non-governmental organization doing capacity building, then finally moved full-time into academia. Can't complain; it has been an interesting life so far.

Stepped down as managing partner of local CPA firm a couple years ago. Now just working there as part time mercenary during tax season.
Would be kinda fun to share beer with @BrewsOverHoes as a sort of death and taxes session. Special nod to @scream if he is truly IRS, couldn't have done it without you man. @KingforaDay can come too
