When I first started homebrewing every single person I knew that homebrewed was a geologist-some in the oilfield, one working at Sandia Labs, one working at Los Alamos Labs

They grow out of it when they graduate, geologists never do.

Up until this past September I flew Navy for the past 25yrs (flying helicopters, working flight decks, managing airspace, teaching midshipmen, etc... bunch of stuff). Now, I'm the finest mediocre substitute teacher in all of southern VT.

I'll have 40 years with the US gov't in July and am pretty much done at this point ,had a hip replacement a couple months ago so the light at the end of the tunnel is shining pretty bright.I basically fix what other dumbasses break. Think building engineer/facilities tech...it's been an interesting ride.

I admire your honesty. In CA no one working nuclear admits to it. Instead they all have to claim more socially acceptable professions like drug dealer or child pornographer. Cheers to you, sir.

That’s awesome! I can definitely say I know a few people in the business who can throw down with me. Lol. Definitely think we are apt to release in that way, as we have a lot of residual emotional build up. Comes with the territory. We’ve all got a sense of humor as well I think we have to.

    Cheers Dave!

I'm a long-time CPA (40 years), and a CFO. Currently the CFO of a DSO (Dental Service Organization), headquartered in the Atlanta, GA area; I commute there from the Plano/Dallas, Tx area.

One benefit of my commute: I can get Allagash in GA, but not in TX. A few others as well. OTOH, Goose Island Bourbon County BA stout is not available in GA. At least, according to the Total Wine website.

I write, record, produce, and perform music, and sometimes get paid for it. I've been doing this professionally for the last 10 years.

As far as "real jobs", up until covid, I worked in a bottle shop as a beer and whisk(e)y specialist with occasional inventory and retail duties, as well as working with various breweries and distilleries on various projects. Fun job, terrible coworkers.

Before that, I briefly worked as a tobacconist.

Before that, I was a Senior Logistics Ambassador for Amazon at a major California distribution centre. Damn, that job paid well, and had some sweet-ass benefits.

    Before that I was a bartender/kitchen hand at a local bowling alley/bar.

Before that, I was working as a "sous chef" in an upscale Italian restaurant under an alcoholic head chef from Mexico who got wasted every night and didn't really speak English. It also turned out that he was forging checks in his wife's name to fund payroll. He got closed down and arrested.

I've worked a few bullshit jobs here and there between some of these as well as some short-term gigs and projects that I can't say really count as "making a living", and up until 2019, had been playing and recording professionally the entire time.

Right now, I basically drink beer and post things on BeerAdvocate. Full-time. Great colleagues.

My grandson is in his first year at college and studying to become a geologist, but he's not 21 yet so he's not a drinker. We'll see how that goes!

I manage people that sell the stuff my company manufactures.

Hopefully, lots and lots of stuff.

My secondary career is serving as Mrs O's boy toy (she retired 3 years ago, but has done volunteer work since then at our local hospice).

    That's right, I said it!!!!!

When I took the North Carolina Bar in 2014 the system used for taking and uploading your essays (first day was 12 essays) crashed and I spent the four hours unsuccessfully trying to turn in my test by midnight. Around 10:00 we finally found out what happened and were given an extra day to upload. It made an already stressful day that much more stressful. Luckily I didn’t stroke out and I passed. The Bar is a nightmare in general. I’m sure your son did fine and will soon start a successful career. What are you going to drink with him when he gets his results back?

You wont believe this but my son has never taken a drink or smoke in his entire life. So I will be drinking solo.

How about school with winemaking and brewing undergrads? We were literally given campus classrooms to conduct unsupervised after-hours tastings.

That sounds like an amazing transition and cool career. One of my former students this year asked me to write his recommendation his application to Annapolis. Mediocre subs are the best type of subs. I wish I could buy you a beer. Cheers!

    Really enjoying this thread.

Im a classically trained environmental scientist that has been focused on working with water quality for 20 years. Both with education of for high school students and teachers for 10 years and then for 10 years as a regulator in State Govt.

Just recently took over as executive director of a conservation district, which is a quasi govt non-profit organization.

Love what I do and get to spend a decent amount of time working in the field.
Quite a few green, crunchy, enviro folks enjoy putting back some craft beers. Plus ya gotta have clean water to make good beer.

Hope you wrote his recommendation; great, but humbling, place (our son is a senior there... both wife & I are also grads). It was a great ride; but really enjoying the down time. Frankly, I owe everyone (i.e. taxpayers) plenty of beers.
