It sounds like she is a very bright lady; tell her to get those patient care hours and run. Thanks for the kind words, my man.

Welcome to the 'club'. I retired 8 years ago and I'm enjoying it more every day. I always have some project to do to keep busy, but I'll take time to relax with a good book too.

Not Native Californian, but I've been here for over 40 years. Bad enough folks in some counties have to deal with PSPS, but then have CAISO issuing rolling blackouts because there is not enough supply. So yeah, California can talk big about clean energy, the fact is, you don't have nearly enough capacity, and shutting down anymore power plants is just not going to happen.

OK, now it makes sense when I was asking you if you were going to watch this years TDF and you were mentioning it would be a very long drive South to get there.

Always wondered about some of y'all and what ya do. You're a diverse and interesting bunch.

...7 years old. paper boy. 7 days a week, 250 papers. Yeah I went to school too... somewhere in there.

Some 40 years later, I am in DevOps, leading a team of 5 people that support a pipeline that can scale to a billion dollars revenue stream potential for a Fortune 100. I work remote 100 percent and some days, this can be my random office...

I worked remote recently from Kingman Wash, AZ for 5 days with this view, off grid/4GLTE tether/vanlife/LiFePo4. That van, down on the right was Avalon999 on youtube, he was a pretty cool dude we met there and talked to for a few minutes. Checked out his videos, he is doing some nice reviews of people's remodeled old RVs.

My wife does similar work and was right there working off grid too.

    Cheers!

I get into a bad habit of only checking the same handful of threads and as a result sometimes miss really good ones...this being a stellar example. I have a million things I should be doing other than perusing BA, but still ended up spending the last ~30 minutes reading through this one.

Anyway, my core takeaway is that if the world is ending, many of you have much more practical skills than I do. I've been in financial services for the last 25 years. Variety of different roles over the years, but currently my team essentially does stuff to help prevent regulatory issues (SEC, FINRA, state securities agencies etc.) and to detect problems if / when they occur.

At face value it may not sound exciting, but it's actually challenging and I love the people I work with, and the company overall.

It's true. Geologists have a thing for craft beer too. There's a long-running national geophysics conference (I forget which) famous for serving beer during the conference and one of the beers was SNPA at least back to the 90's. Mind in the 90's craft beer on tap anywhere was kind of a novelty, much less to have it served a professional conference. I remember my structure/geophysics professor telling me about how great conference was. (I graduated in '02)

Interesting that he went into college for geology. For decades most geology graduates typically start college undecided or something else and change majors to geology. High schools are terrible at introducing kids to earth sciences; or earth science is part of a non-college-prep curriculum (i.e. "rocks for jocks" :unamused:).

And now I'm going to vent a little... because geology isn't a big draw for college enrollment for the reasons above, colleges looking to trim budgets commonly merge the geology department into the "environmental science" department and the quality of geology programs always suffer. I've done lots of interviews of college grads and there are less qualified graduates now than 10 years ago. When I see an "environmental science" degree it tells me nothing, I have to ask for a transcript, to see if the course load was ecology/sustainability vs. geology.

I am a Senior Scientist in protein biochemistry at a pharmaceutical company. Working in early drug discovery can be insanely frustrating, as almost everything we do ends up failing at some point, but it’s a great job nonetheless.

Yeah, he may yet change his mind and major in something else, but he's been a rock hound since forever, and is a brainy kid and already knows his stuff. He talked the science dept head in high school into starting a geology class for his senior year, but with no teacher who felt knowledgeable enough to teach it, my grandson ended up being the unofficial teacher.

That's awesome. Good for him. Looks like high schools haven't gotten any better than when I was there. You'd think with with online learning opportunities today they could help kids more with specific interests/talents.

FWIW, if he's looking to move into something related, geotechnical engineering is a cool geoscience field and will be [and has been throughout human history] in demand as long people want to build buildings.

I wholeheartedly agree with @Roy_Hobbs. I often check the same threads and forget about searching for others. This is one of my favorite threads on BA.

In a year like this, where interacting with others outside of immediate family is generally not happening, this is such a great read and an awesome community.

Cheers, BAs! Much love to you all.

I was in the restaurant business for 25 years. Lots of highs, but this year so many lows. Our lease ended at the end of October, and, considering the Governor could shut down restaurants if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed, we chose to not renew, and close for good. The restaurant had been in town (under previous owners) since 1948.

As of Tuesday, I am now working in a local liquor store, and I'm really liking it.

Mechanical Engineer currently working in aerospace. My primary project is lead mechanical engineer on a project developing the acoustic treatments inside specific fairings of the upcoming SLS rocket.

Also bounce around on some other projects as needed, but that's the big one! It's really interesting work, I like it.
