I did a search first and couldn't find any threads on this. With special release stout season here I'm finding myself acquiring a few bombers and 750ml imperial stouts. I don't have any beer drinking friends that live close enough to enjoy these together with, and so I'm wondering, once you open one of these do you tough it out and drink all 20+oz of 13%+ ABV brew in one sitting? Anyone have methods of recapping and storing to enjoy half one night and half the next? One the one hand, it kinda sucks drinking 20-30 bucks worth of beer all at once by yourself. On the otherhand, when I'm dropping that much on a single bottle I don't want half of it to be a lesser experience if it degrades at all if I try to reseal and store for the next night.

I have these stopper things that I got at Total Wine. You insert the rubber stopper into the bottle and flip the lever on the top and it expands the rubber stopper to provide a good seal. It has always worked well for me on the few occasions that I have needed to save part of a bomber for the next day.

Personally, I finish it. But, lots of other folks here seem to have success with various methods of recapping.

Just use a wine stopper. Half one night, half the next. There's no change in 24 hours if you use a stopper. Don't use the rubber caps because they can pop off.

I wrap the bottle tightly with Saran wrap immediately after pouring my serving, keep it refrigerated, and have no issues with carbonation the next day.

The older I get the more intimidating those large-format bottles become. I'm glad they are becoming less common.

If I have a big bottle like this, I tend to carve out time to enjoy it, if I can. Last one I had this situation with was Maman ‘19 (750ml, 14% I think) at the start of the pandemic. I opened it early in the day, mid afternoon, and enjoyed it over 3-4 hours. It amounted to two full pours and I left the bottle and my glass on the dining room table as i did things around the house. Popping in for a sip here and there. An outstanding beer and drinking experience.

I would hate to try to jam something like this into an hour, let alone the potential hangover that would accompany it.

I have certainly recapped and bottle sealed in the past, but I’ve made sure to drink the lion’s share in my first sitting so I get the ounces and experience I want from the beer.

I have one of these. There is a rubber seal underneath and it slides over the top of the bottle works pretty well.

Do you find the carb level impacted?

Yeah. I finish them. I do try to stop at 1 a day though. They're might have been two 2016 KBSs on Thanksgiving though.

I'm sure technically by some miniscule amount it is, but not enough for me to detect it. One time I forgot about it and had it the next night, and then it was definitely noticeable.

That stout can be better the second day. As long as some carbonation is retained, a little oxidation over that short period can be positive. It’s not an across the board thing, and malt-forward styles tend to work better than hop-forward styles.

I usually just tough it out and finish the whole thing in a couple hours. If I don’t have the time to devote to it, I won’t open that particular bottle. I have plenty of smaller formats I can go to if that’s the case

All about displacing oxygen from neck.

Search on “wine saver”. Solutions from $10 into hundreds.

In the statistical analysis of what happens when poor judgement opens a bomber at 2am, past all hope of finishing, I’ve found that flat sours are pretty darn good but that big stouts lose something the next day.

    Again. Displace.

I wait until the wife's out and there's a good movie to watch. Sometimes, I end up opening a second bottle.

I assume spraying an inert gas would work to this end?

For better or worse I’ve always finished them, it’s one reason why I’ve traded away a lot of great beer,,,, for other great beer in more manageable volume. If I’m GI the 500 ml bottles are very attractive, but I’d go back to 12 Oz 4 pks. I might personally buy more if the size was more user friendly, and like some I’ve got no one else here to share with.

That is what has always deterred me from buying a lot of bombers, especially high gravity BBA stouts. I just can't drink a whole one in one sitting, and I don't want to be committed to having to finish it the next day. I can be capricious. I may prefer an IPA the next day and half of a bomber potentially is wasted. (I know, I know).

I passed up buying a bomber of CBS in NYC last year because of that reason, but when I found a four pack of 12 ounce bottles in a local bottle shop I quickly snatched them up. Here is for packaging beer in more manageable sizes!!!

I suspect there’s more than a few of us that would prefer the 12 oz option.

Firestone, Deschutes, Founder's, Sierra Nevada, and Founder's have all come to their senses. Hope the trend continues!
