    Still pending US markets:

“Unfortunately, at this moment the beer is only available in Belgium but we hope to make it available in the US soon. So everybody can enjoy and taste our new beer! Cheers”

I haven't had a Gulden Draak in ages, but will seek this out for sure.

The press release seems to imply they're smoking the malt themselves ("...we go back to the ancient tradition of malt drying: smoking malt.")

How do we know they're not just importing smoked malt from Weyermann?

Gulden Draak is one of my staples, both the regular and the 9000 quad.

I would be willing to bet they are just purchasing smoked malt from a Malting Company (e.g., Weyermann, Bestmalz,...).

    Cheers!

This came to the US already, but I only saw it as kegged beer. I think it was about a year ago. If I remember correctly, I really didn’t care for it (and I typically love smoked malt in beer), but it could have definitely just been the wrong choice of beer for me that day (and I was annoyed at the bar that night ).

Me too until I moved back to Chile (where is sold everywhere), now it is continuously in my rotation. It is truly a great beer.

For me, Gulden Draak is a special treat when I can find it - I'll definitely be tracking this one down. And I don't remember that Weyermann smokes malt and does it really make a difference where the smoked malt gets smoked?

Brewers have preferences for malts from certain malting companies since they will make differences in how the resulting beers taste and needless to say for commercial breweries economics (i.e., costs) play a role here as well.

When it comes to smoked malts one factor is what type of wood is used to produce the smoked malt. For example, Weyermann chooses to use beechwood to produce their smoked malt.

    Cheers!

There was a Belgian bar here now long defunct, always had Gulden Draak on tap, he went out of business because the location was close to campus and college kids drink PBR not $10 glasses of Belgian beers.

Pretty cool, don’t remember but they had a guy that was part of the Gulden Drakk Society, flew him to Belgium. He was really into it.

One of those bars full of crazies I didn’t like, hard to sit there sipping on a $12 beer and the guy sitting next to you is wearing a full Spider-Man get up. Catered to wierdos.
