Feel free to submit it... Sometimes the typo/minor errors are from the actual Brewer’s website information so we do not correct them in those cases, otherwise it is probably a quick fix for one of us.

I have only been a member a bit more than a month and have already used Beer tools to report updated ABV, changes to availability, etc. In each case it seems I noticed edits were made in less than a day, although I don't get any notice that the change was made, but that is no big deal. If I had an edit rejected then I would like to know why.

Is there any capability to alert the user that their edit/suggestion has been denied? Just curious as I have submitted a few beer pics that never took without any explanation.

Also the Mods saved my dumbass today so praise be! Use your beer tools BA & stack that karma!

Not at this time, but I'd love to eventually add this and other alerts.

That would be cool, I've added Beers that have had their styles changed upon further review. It would be cool to get an update when this occurs. Not likely to happen, it would take too many changes to make the benefits worthwhile.[/QUOTE]

Since this thread came up, I've been adding notes from the packaging of a lot of local brews that don't have them on their listing.

You can see how many you've added on your profile page (as has been pointed out), but you can't link directly to those beers. Would be a good tweak if possible.

I use it to change style/availability/beer notes all the time. It's a great tool to keep info up to date.

    Regarding the uploading of photos...

Every new phone, tablet, or iWhatever, that comes out has a better and better camera with higher and higher resolution and, as a consequence, larger file size. But the site only allows upload of photos up to 20k. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to manipulate images to get them under the limit. The last photo I uploaded (River Roost, Shattered Illusions of Love) looks like I took it in a steam room.

There's probably a simple change I can make in my phone's settings but I'm old, I'm sick of shit changing all the time and I just want to drink the beer.

Yep....I so totally agree with all you said. I exhausted the exploration of settings on my phone before I concluded that the only way I was going to get the requisite 20kb limit PLUS the restrictive "exactly 150 x 300 pixels" or whatever BA now demands was to either spend a stupid amount of time trying to take the picture from far away then crop it exactly or decipher the parade of insufficiently detailed guidance posts that generally start with "all you have to do is...." followed by reference to some obscure software or internet site that either wants me to register or download something or some other task that falls into the category of "nope....not going to happen just to please BA".

Not trying to speak for @Todd, but I imagine that back when those restrictions were put into place, server storage along with the required backups were fairly expensive, so the restrictions were likely driven by economics for the site to be able to afford it.

Now, while server storage is considerably less expensive, the restriction is baked into the database and the software and would take a lot of effort and time to change.

Again, I am just speculating based on my professional experience with similar things in software, databases, and equipment costs.

Anyhow, for awhile I struggled also with making decent-looking 150x300 20KB pictures. I finally have a method that works fairly well and is reasonably efficient. My method does require a computer, though.
    • Use Photoshop Elements (or your favorite cheap photo editing software) to crop the photo to a 1x2 aspect ratio around your subject. Actual pixel count doesn't matter. Neither does file size.
I also use Photoshop to resize the cropped picture to 800x1600 and then use moderate JPEG compression as I save the file, but this is likely not necessary.)
For some reason, Photoshop Elements pretty much destroys the quality of the photo if I use it to reduce it all the way down to 150x300 and with enough JPEG compression to get below 20KB. So, I have one more step...
Verify the file size (usually in the 16KB range) and upload the result to BA.

It was definitely driven by storage, bandwidth, associated costs, software limitations, and image specifications at the time. Everything has changed since and many times over.
Yeah. It's basically legacy code that hasn't been updated yet. Why? For example: I could easily update the script to say a standard 4:3 resolution at 960x1280 pixels and up to 256 KB. That'd be a massive upgrade for photo quality and make it easier for more users, but this would require a complete overhaul of how we store and display beer photos, existing photos would probably not work, and it would still feel like a very manual process for most users.

Our beta app would've eventually provided a solid solution as it had the ability to upload photos with reviews, but that project was scraped at the end of 2019. I hope to revisit app development later in 2021, at which time we might be able to repurpose photo uploading functionality from Untappd. Knowing this makes me reluctant to make any changes now.

Righty-fine. I don’t mind going a little bit above-and-beyond to pull my weight around here, and begging your pardon if I’m taking liberties, but I’m just going to go ahead and interpret the above as meaning that photos aren’t a big priority and that I should probably slack off a bit.

Definitely not a high-priority item right now, but it's definitely something that needs to be addressed and it will be as soon as we have the bandwidth and resources to do so.

I don't need a response and I post this only as a data point that might not even have much value but as an FYI, when I was brand new here I really wanted to participate and I did post a couple pictures of new, previously unlisted beers along with my reviews. Since my computer is owned by my employer who does not allow unauthorized apps or software that would make the 20 kb+ 150x300 pixel limits easier it literally took me over 40 minutes to massage each photo into "compliance". That's when I decided I would do reviews but no freaking way would I continue with that photo posting process for the beer review pages.

I've said this before, but Resize Your Image really makes the process pretty simple. It's a very intuitive, easy-to-use tool and doesn't require you to download or register, just go to the website. It also automatically reduces file size and you can manually adjust it after resizing the picture as well. Highly recommended if you're looking for the fastest and easiest way to do it.

Personally, I have made the switch to picture editing software a while ago and while it does require you to download that software and takes some getting used to at first, once you figure it out it's a much smoother process that also gives you more editing choices, which is pretty nice to have. I use Paint.net, which is pretty easy-to-use and doesn't drown you in options like Photoshop or Gimp.

You can set the rectangle select to a fixed 1x2 pixel size (1800x3600 for me) so that you have a fixed frame that you can reuse for each picture, then simply crop to that selection and resize to 150x300 afterwards. When you save the picture, you can adjust the file size. You can also brighten the picture up a little, which I find pretty useful.

Literally takes less than a minute to resize a picture with either of those methods.

I will second this. I've uploaded almost 800 label photos and 95% of them were done using that site. Its super easy and intuitive, and it takes me maybe 5 minutes from taking the photo to submission.

@BillAfromSoCal will your computer let you get on that site and do the edits that way?
