I've been giving this style a fair shake for a couple of years. Every one I've tried (La Fin, Chamay, Karmeliet, Piraat, and a few others all have some sort of cheese flavor that I'm picking up. Not a sour or funky taste.... but cheese. Is this a typical flavor profile of the style? I don't pick up this flavor with SBPA's (ie: Don De Dieu, Duvel, etc.) but only with tripels. Can someone direct me to a tripel that doesn't contain different cheese notes?? Or is my pallette doomed.

Try a Westmalle. I don't detect any cheese. I think you won't be disappointed.

Not really sure I have ever detected the flavor you are referencing in a tripel but give New Belgium's Trippel a shot and North Coast Pranqster both of those taste a little different and maybe the element you describe as cheese is missing from those.

I would also recommend Pranqster, though its not a tripel. If you trade or order online I would also recommend Boulevard Long Strange Tripel.

Wish I could find one to finally kick that taste bud door down...need to try a westy but man.. Maybe my buds don't do Belgian style.. Yet. Pranqster.. Golden Monkey.. La fin..(I was able to almost finish the latter)..but simply not what I'm looking for to date. Ebonically it be what it am. Cheers.

    Not getting cheese.....socks

Give Allagash Tripel a shot if you can. I didn't detect and cheese notes and it is very champagne like - crisp and dry.

I second the Westmalle recommendation. Best of breed.

If you're in an area they distribute to, I would highly recommend Schlafly Tripel. Probably the best tripel I've ever had, and one of the best beers overall I've had.

Is Piraat a tripel?? Cant go wrong with some Chimay White, and La Trappe Tripel is not bad either. Westmalle and St. Bernardus also have a damn good tripel. I personally don't care for Long Strange Tripel, but New Belgium's isn't bad, just can't compare to the authentics.

At thanksgiving we cracked a bottle of funkwerks deceit. I highly reccomend checking one out. Best trippel I've had. Honestly, I hated fin du monde, it had a flavor profile and mouthfeel that reminded me of a really crappy brie. I get a similar sensation from trois pistoles, but not as heavy. Not sure if this is the same cheese effect you're getting, but if it is give deceit a go.

St. Bernardus Tripel is definitely my favorite, it's amazing, I always recommend it. There aren't any "cheese" notes, and I'm not sure what you're picking up..

Everyone's pallete is different of course. I haven't had a Tripel I didnt like. On the other hand I cant do Barleywines just doesn't agree with my tastebuds. Don't fret, dont force it, just move on to the other wide variety of tastes that work for you.

I've never picked up any cheese in any tripels that I can recall. However, I'd check out St. Bernardus Tripel.

Are you pouring all the sediment into your glass or leaving it behind in the bottle to either throw away or drink separately?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give some of them a try! Sorry about the Piraat, yes it's a Belgian IPA but I detected the same cheese notes. Yes, I pour the entire bottle into the glass, sediment and all.

Victory Golden Monkey would be a good choice. It's one of the smoother/ easier to drink tripels out there.

Unfortunately, this beer was a drain pour for me.... Twice. I'm in NY, I hope to find this Westmalle Tripel and St. Bernardus.
