To combat a rise in abuse (buying, selling, and multiple accounts), a couple of weeks ago I decided to lock the beer trading forums down by making them private; viewable by users who are logged in and signed up to trade. I also explored making trading a Society member perk, but that's definitely not happening now. My bad. So we moved on from that and a follow up thread resulted in some great feedback from the community.

Based on this feedback, the following updates will be applied on Dec. 31.

    Updates: https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...ates-december-2020.652797/page-2#post-7136458

New Criteria to Become Eligible to Trade
To become eligible to trade, users will need to be a member for at least 30 days and accrue 50 Beer Karma points. Existing traders who don't meet this criteria will be removed from the trading group (no impact to your history or posts), but will be able to rejoin once the criteria has been met.

Points are awarded for a wide-range of site contributions, including: providing profile information, reviewing beers, and engaging with others in our community forums.

    No More Self-Moderated Threads
ISO;FT threads will no longer be self-moderated to promote more transparency, open discussions, and accountability. Basically, this means that users will no longer be able to lock their threads so no one can publicly reply or remove replies that they don't like. Being able to edit or delete your thread won't be impacted by this update.

    Reminders
We're going to remind users of the rules on a regular basis and encourage users to report abuse; buying, selling, multiple accounts, and other activities that are against the rules.

    Beer-for-Beer Only?
I'd eventually like to go back to trading beer-for-beer only, but for now we'll create a separate sub-forum for offers that include other beverages under ISO;FT and move any existing posts to the new sub-forum.

Thanks again to everyone who provided constructive feedback.

I think you and the trading community’s feedbacks have found the right balance. Making it a society member perk was being rigid. This is not. Contribute a bit to the forums (50 karma points is literally nada and fairly achievable) and you’re one of us.

If I am understanding correctly seems like @Todd would like to go back to only beer trades. I think that would be a downfall to the site and would cut down on the traffic.

IMO i think the way it is setup now is perfect. Keeps all trading in one thread. Some threads already can be a dozy to try and find...

In total agreement. A low bar that hopefully reduces abuse.

Appreciate you taking the community’s feedback into consideration before implementing changes. Sounds good.

Will ISO:FT include the same sub-categories of Limited, $4$, Locals, Proxy/Trustee Requests, or will the set up for ISO:FT look different?

Trading for non-beer represents a negligible amount of our overall traffic. We'll be just fine without it, but it's not being removed with this update so there's nothing to worry about right now.

Except for non-beer (and existed threads) being moved into its own sub-forum, ISO;FT isn't being touched.

I guess you got the numbers, but it seems like 40% or more post involve some kind of whiskey in the FT or ISO lists...

In any case I hope all changes are good and brings more people into trading..

Trading in general has always been a small fraction of our overall traffic.

This movie... watched it as a teen and found it both outstanding and suitably creepy. A masterpiece.

If you look there’s lots of guys here strictly to trade. Low posts, high trades, never seen participating in talk forums. It’s a beer site that meets the wants. I also noticed very few locked and closed, that just makes me wonder if it’s about winning and auctioning off whales. But again we’re big boys we can ignore it.

I agree...it's a classic...one where the "freaks" seem more human than the "non-freaks"...it's a character thing vs. a physical thing...

Anyway, not trying to hijack the thread...

Plus I one can make a related argument for trading ethically on BA...it takes the right spirit spirit and character to make it a community thing...don't be an outlier...it ain't necessary...

Thank you again @Todd for allowing us a chance to discuss this with you, before making this a Society Members-only perk. While I may not be too keen on not being able to delete troll or hostile replies or lock posts that devolve into fights, I'm willing to make that comprise to keep trading free and open. Perhaps mods can be a little open-minded and flexible about requests to clean up posts if they get particularly ugly, as some often do ("Hey this offer sucks" - "no you suck" - "no, YOU suck" - "well you AND your beer suck bro" - "I think his offer is good.." - "WELL YOU SUCK TOO!" - that kinda thing) but for now, this is a much more palatable change than the perk business, and one I'll gladly accommodate.

You could have just not listened to any of us, and said, "Screw you guys, my site, my rules", but you didn't, and you allowed for a democratic negotiation, even when some were overly hostile towards you, and I greatly respect and appreciate that. That kind of connection to the community is what separates this from most other massive sites, and I hope that never goes away.

I think requiring people to be active for 30 days and accrue some karma prior to trading is a very good step in the right direction, and will hopefully cut down on some of the sketchy fly-by-night traders. I'm sure I speak for others in saying that I'll definitely remain diligent, and report any alarming or suspicious attempts, such as people trying to sell their wares here.

Again, thank you for allowing us to have a voice here, and for listening to that voice. I think you've gone a great service to the community by doing so, and I, as well as many others, thank you for that.

    Merry Christmas, Todd.

These are good ideas for the most part. However, trading is largely done behind the scenes and trading for non-beer is much more prevalent than it might appear. I, personally, would like to see it remain. I recognize that it's not being impacted by this change but am imploring that it remain unchanged indefinitely.

I think it’s a maybe 40% of the limited but in $4$ and locals is very rare. You have to think a majority of the trades that occur at probably more locals and $4$ as the “big item tickets seem to move slower.

Is there a legal reason for removing non beer trades (that is unique separate from beer)? I don't actively trade non-beer but curious as to the reason to remove it. Also curious what amount of trade activity is currently from members that wouldn't meet the requirements.
