Well you are entitled to your opinion.

Yes. We all are. But simply disliking something doesn’t mean that it’s flawed.

A couple of weeks posting on WBAYDN will get you there in no time. :beers:

Agreed. So I'd love to hear why participating in other areas of BA has any bearing on whether or not someone is a reputable trader. The current formula rewards people with more karma for leaving a review than actually completing a successful trade. This seems flawed if the karma points now serve as a gateway to trading.

The points accrued for posting a single beer review are the same amount as you get for completing a unique trade.

Ok great. I'm still disinclined to trade with someone who has 50 beer reviews and zero trades versus the inverse.

As you should be, hence why they ship first.

Which gets back to my original point, what bearing does karma have then on trading? Look, I'm not blowing coffee all over my keyboard here over the prospect of having to possibly earn another 20 karma points to keep trading around here. If that's what it comes to, so be it. My concern is that this 1) presents a barrier to trading on here that causes less activity, and 2) it creates a false sense of security for traders.

I don't see it so much as a sense of security as a manner of gauging someone's involvement and engagement in a community.

I like these changes, one thing I do hope is that the ban hammer will come sooner rather than later for those who do not act like Advocates both for beer and community. Last year people had multiple threads with multiple replies because they were posting auctions and/ or obtuse ramblings, the community kept reporting and nothing was done and they were allowed to continue. I know these changes were put in motion to stop the shitlording and I feel like taking swift action as stated will only help to make things run smoother. Cheers

My reading of the problem to be solved was that there were people using throwaway accounts accounts to engage in attempts to sell alcohol. Some karma threshold seems like the only way to gauge whether an account is a throwaway or not. Without knowing the intricacies of the karma system, 50 seems like a pretty low threshold to demonstrate that you're hear to participate rather than just exploit

Isn't this against the rules here in the first place? Why the extra hoops to jump for everyone just to prevent a few people from being burned doing something they're not supposed to in the first place?

I can't speak for the entire mod team here, but I didn't see any of this sort of behavior. Also, auctions (holding out for the best offer) aren't against the rules.

This analysis and thought process reads like a John La Carre novel - hard to get through, but well thought out and worth it in the end. Thanks for the excellent input.

Question for you - when you suggest that if trading drops based on higher barriers to entry, Poo-bah's and Meyvn's may be adversely affected in the future because of the lack of future forum and overall BA participation from those new and future BA users who would otherwise have joined were the barriers not been so rigorous? If so, I would totally agree with this logic.

I know that it isn’t, but I don’t think anyone on here likes that rule. It begets all the things I posted earlier. Just my 2 cents. Cheers

We eventually allowed auctions years ago based on user feedback/demand. If most traders no longer want to see them, they should speak up. I'm listening, more than happy to revisit the topic, and will start a feedback thread soon.

you said it - i thought it. since i'm not a huge participant in trading i wouldn't have quite said it so bluntly - it's sort of "none of my business". but i've honestly wondered if more than 10% of the trades i suspect you are referring to ever get done? it seems like 1 party would have to be desperate or suffer from a lack awareness. which is the same as those posts just taking up unnecessary space since they are basically only for those who flunked math.

I definitely get that, but I also see the benefit for someone who is looking for great beer and would like to trade their bourbon for it. As long as it has beer in trade, it seems reasonable to me.
