Will kick of the new year with Haymarket Brewing's announcement of the Clare's Thirsty Ale January release.

    https://twitter.com/HaymarketBeer/status/1342929239180529671

We'll be celebrating our 10th Beerthday on January 12, and while that celebration will look different than year's past, one thing stays the same. We'll be releasing this year's Clare's Thirsty Ale! 4 packs will be available for carryout & pickup at our Pub & Taproom!

They’ve only been around for 10 years? Seems longer.

How young these established places are constantly amazes me. Like how Pipeworks started on kickstarter

10 years in, I don't think Haymarket played the beer game as well as HA, Pipeworks and Rev....

I say this as a card-carrying member of the "I like hot peppers but not in my beer" club, but Temperance Might Meets Right La Sorpresa is actually pretty good and I say give it a try even if you're not about that life.

Also I know this isn't a 2021 release but I'm drinking it now so whatever.

What cracks me up is how Temperance sells out of the mixed 4 packs of Might Meets Right every year, but then they magically re-appear months before they release the new years edition....

I missed it last year, but La Sorpresa is legitimately one of my favorite chocolate/chili stouts. I gotta see if they still have some 4 packs

I thoroughly enjoy the might meets right mixed 4 pack from temperance.I would appreciate this mixed 4 pack concept from other breweries.

They were pretty focused on the brew pub(s). They don’t depend on distro like Pipeworks chose too. Heck, Haymarket only started canning beer a few years ago, after PDubs

The argument can be made that Haymarket makes beer on par with those breweries. Haymarket just doesn’t chase trends as well are the other companies mentioned.

It isn’t chasing trends, it’s scaling. Haymarket seems to be content with retail brewpubs. They did/do make solid beer, but they missed the window to be a distributing brewer and will never be beloved as much as the big Chicago brewer’s because they chose to stay smal.

Its just different goals. At this point I am convinced Pipeworks will never had a taproom/brewpub - they've gone all in on the distribution model. Haymarket on the other hand has focused primarily on the brewpub format. Not everyone needs to "scale up" to focus on distribution and frankly, especially in a beer market like Chicago, they're smart for not doing that. They carved out their niche, they do well in that niche, and that allows them to succeed in what they're doing. Once you scale up, its a dogfight for shelf space and consumer interest and both of those are fickle masters ...

As for being as "beloved" as the big Chicago brewers - I don't think Haymarket sees Rev, GI, Half Acre, etc as their competition - its more places like Corridor, Cruz Blanca, etc ... so no, they aren't going to have the widespread notoriety that those places do, but I will say this - even though their reach is limited, Haymarket seems to have a very good reputation nonetheless.

I generally agree with the first part of this:

But it's completely different from what you first said...

...which assumes that there's only one game to be played in brewing, and all breweries are better or worse at that singular game.

How is that completely different? Those things aren't mutually exclusive- Haymarket played a bad beer game, they seem to be content with their model... How is Haymarket doing during the pandemic compared to their peers who have large distro models? I'm guessing not nearly as well. . At similar starting times, how much more are Pipeworks and Half Acre worth than Haymarket? Even just on goodwill in the form of the brands. Some brands are content to be average. Some teams are content to be average and it shows in their game.
