How is it that michelada beers have the same ABV as their base beer?

For example, Bud Light Chelada has 4.2% ABV, just like regular Bud Light, and Budweiser Chelada has 5% ABV, just like regular Budweiser.

Are they brewing the beer with higher ABV, or evaporating out some of the water or something first in order to maintain the same ABV even after mixing it with the Clamato? Or is it a case of falsely advertising the real ABV? Or some legal loophole where they're allowed to list the ABV of the base beer without consideration of added ingredients diluting the mix?

What makes you think those Clams haven't been imbibing (or more likely it doesn't take much to impart flavor)

Clamato has a lot more than just clam though

Pretty sure there is no real clamato in there. Just some crazy clamato flavoring. I bet there is no more than 2-3 drops per can.

I heard those beers are just blended off batches of bud and bud light

AB (and many other large, and some "small", breweries) brew their flagship and other beers via the high gravity method - brew a strong beer and then, at bottling, reduce the concentrated beer by adding sterile, deaerated, carbonated water. Gets the ABV exactly where they want it, saves money, increases capacity, etc. I'd imagine that's how these "mixed" beers marketed by the big brewers like cheladas, shandys, radlers wind up at more or less "normal" abv's.

According to AB's Tap Into Your Beer website, Budwieser Chelada's ingredients are:

High gravity brewing. They can create a final product with basically whatever final ABV they desire.

Pro Tip: Even when the clams imbibe, the alcohol remains in the can unless they (while dead) can find a way to metabolize said alcohol. :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm certain that big corporations are careful to be accurate with ABV listed on pkg., but that isn't true for all companies. A recent example is the public accusation and subsequent admission of such by 450 North. I often wonder how widespread this misreporting is, and how greatly the numbers are "off". 450 North got busted because their numbers were "off" greatly.

3 Notchd had a tripel (?) recently where the 4 pack was marked 9ish abv but the bottle was marked 12ish abv... me and the bottle shop owner wonder how the hell they got away with that.

You'd think there'd be some kind of regulatory commission that tests alcohol to make sure the listed ABV is correct. Considering alcohol is a drug, I'm surprised the FDA or someone isn't looking out for these kind of issues proactively.
