I hesitated to write this, as I mostly love Trapp beer. However, we bought some Moove On Up stout from Upper Pass (who contract brew their larger batches at von Trapp) in August that was seriously sour, not in a nice way. It so happens that one of the brewers at Upper Pass moonlights as an orthopedic surgeon, specifically my wife's OS, so we know him pretty well. They were aware of the problem. Figured it was a one-off issue and forgot about it. Then I got some Vienna lager last week. Sour and slightly fecal, poured into a glass shows the stringy bacterial colonies similar to the "sick" stage of lambic fermentation. All the other von Trapp beers are still excellent, at least the ones I've had. Has anyone else experienced this?

Well, you definitely just doxed this dude for sure. This also might be the weirdest combination of words I’ve read on BA. I’m guessing you meant to write the surgeon moonlights as a brewer? 2021 off to a wild start.

Ha yeah, I was like, what brewer MOONLIGHTS as a surgeon?!

And in general, what surgeon has the time for a second job as a brewer? Or a second job period.

Well, this one has made the time, somehow. I was joking about moonlights as... He is highly regarded in his medical job, justifiably so.

Poor attempt at humor on my part; yes, he got into brewing after many years as a highly regarded md.

So, putting my faux pas in the past, has anyone had issues with Trapp Vienna lager?

I feel like surgeons should have to disclose that they brew beer professionally on the side.

Also, how does a brewery release and the forget about a soured batch of beer? Or were you saying your forgot about it?

Well, I can't talk for everyone but I spent time at Von Trapp in the second half of 2020 and drink a lot of their canned stuff here in VA and I've never had a single issue with them. In fact they are my go-to when I have a craving for a solid pilsner/lager... just my $0.02 though.

I've picked up their several of their beers. I keep coming back to their helles and various pils. Never had a problem. They are one of the better lager and pils producers in New England in my opinion. They are up their with Jack's Abbey in quality, consistency, and pricing methinks. My only complaint is that I wish I could get them a bit fresher.

It's not a secret. They have gotten plenty of media coverage over the years. And, yes, I forgot about the spoiled beer.

I bought the Vienna lager in Waterbury just before Xmas. Got helles at the same time, which was fine, actually a lot better than fine...

Actually, yes. I bought a mixed 12 pack for a camping trip in maybe July? and pretty much all of the beers tasted wrong. I should have reached out to them and I didn't, but everything was sour except the dunkel. I ended up pouring out four or five beers, though I still drank a bunch of them, because despite their sort of sourness they were still refreshing for a day on the beach (and I didn't want to drive to the store), but clearly not the beers that I've grown to know and enjoy over the years.

I think I had a yogurty helles at a dive bar in Burlington a few years ago but I attributed that more to the bar potentially not cleaning their lines than it being a beer itself thing. Haven't had issues with Von Trapp cans.

I'm beginning to wonder if I just got some really old cans via some sort of stocking or distribution error.

Any dates on them Jerry? I emailed them once and I think the BB dates are 5 months out. I’ve since deleted the email but I’m pretty sure that’s the shelf life they give them.

I bought some really old cans in NH once. Like, 6 months past the best by if I recall. They were still drinkable, but I emailed Von Trapp about it just to let them know and they sent me a gift card and some swag. I still wear the winter hat all the time.

Wait, you emailed the brewery to complain about buying old cans and they sent you a hat?

Don't know; will have to dig one out of the recycling tonight. A combo of age and warm storage can do bad things to unpasteurized beer without a lot of alcohol or hops to preserve it.

Retailers are supposed to return old stock, not let it die on the shelf. The brewery was probably glad to hear about it.

Distributors are also supposed to take the beer back, usually a push back on their end not the stores to send beer back. Ive worked for a distributor and now manage a store, so I do see both sides. I didnt want to get yelled at or lose commission while doing sales, but now I also dont want old stock hanging around.

yeah I get that part. I just found it interesting that someone bought cans with a date on them way old and emailed the brewery about it like it was on them and got gift cards and swag for it. Good on von Trapp though. Also I've had many von Trapp beers lately from source and canned, and everything has tasted great other than a 6pk of Pilsner that was probably left out in Summer at a supermarket that stored its beer near entrance.
