I might have been of this opinion before (particularly if were talking in relation to barleywines), but with the way they have improved over the years, no more. Deth’s Tar and DB VSOD are a clear step up from prior vintages. Cafe Deth was a BCBCS killer, and Supermassive is just phenomenal for me. I think the fruited ones are really well done too.

They certainly aren’t pastry stouts, but I’m not going to judge them on that. As I’ve said before, the only one I’ve never really enjoyed is Vanilla Deth. It just hasn’t worked for me, and as a fan of BA vanilla stouts, would love to see them dial one in.

My opinion of Revolution BA stouts is "consistently good but rarely great." Their barleywines are much more frequently great.

I did try the two side by side, blind (not that it's hard to figure out which is which given the ABV difference and the strong Weller smell). I have hope that DBVSOD will mellow out and improve a bit in a year but yes I have considered how easy it'd be to trade it for more VSOD but I'm not totally out of VSOD yet.

Don't get me wrong, DBVSOD is great, especially when I didn't have it next to VSOD, but VSOD was even better.

Does anyone know basic math anymore? By my understanding, "double" equates to a 400% increase in trade value. Convert that to FUPA bucks, and this means DB should be at least 10x better.

I’m going to have to wholeheartedly disagree with the belief that regular Deth’s Tar (especially the past couple years) is not a great example of a BA stout. But that’s just me.

VSOD and Straight Jacket 8oz pours for 3 dollars at my favorite local bar. Those catch up with you rather quick.

Got to say I disagree with this pretty strongly, mostly because I rate their stouts more highly than you do. I'm not the biggest SJ fan either but really love offerings like MG, RtH and all the other iterations.

Let's talk just about stouts though. Two of the very best stouts I've had over the past 2 years have been Deth by Cherries and Supermassive Cafe Deth. Both were, in my opinion, world class offerings.

After that you have what I would say are well above average BA stouts. Here you have regular DT, Cafe Deth, DBVSOD, VSOD and Vanilla Deth.

Sure there are some that don't quite reach the heights and are merely average or slightly above average BA beers like Maple Deth and Deth by Plums.

It might just come down to your individual preferences which is fine, but I think it's hard to say a brewery that over the past two years has put out...

    -Deth by Cherries
    -Supermassive
-Two great vintages of Deths Tar
-Two great vintages of Cafe Deth
    -DBVSOD
    -VSOD
    -Vanilla Deth

    has a "lacking" stout game.

It should be, but it's one of the few Deep Woods beers from the past few years I haven't tried.

And yes, I do accept donations
