I haven’t done any of the DW releases this year, can anyone help me understand how the next one works? I assume the presale is already over?

What I meant by lacking was they fall short of their barleywines and rye ales. They are obviously putting out great stuff, I just find myself gravitating more towards their non-stout offerings. With the exception that I’m really enjoying deth by cherries

What are people thinking about this month's release? I’m definitely excited for Apple Brandy Ryeway and am kinda unsure about the collab. It’s two of my favorite local breweries so I’ll buy for sure but I’ve yet to have a non-adjunct BA stout (or porter in this case) that blows me away from either of them. I’m in the crowd of generally not being blown away by the DW stouts though (save for Supermassive and DBVSOD) - I typically think they’re good but not great.

It’s also really hard to gauge what to buy when I’m doing dry January and trying to reduce my amount of beer, but I feel like the January DW release may be a case of me going overboard to overcompensate for my lack of buying/drinking the rest of the month.

Definitely excited for the AB Ryeway. The HA collab though, I’m unsure of. I will still probably end up buying more than I should but if I don’t like it I can always toss them in as extras in trades.

I'm a person that bases my ratings on style, then by my preference. For example, I won't compare a stout with vanilla to a BA fruited stout. And I 100% get @TomFoolery_x's point that he's making an "in-relation-to" point comparing Rev's stouts to their barley/ryewines (as I agree those are by far some of the best of their style in the country). But, my question to both of you is (or anyone else that isn't impressed with Rev's stouts), what is an example of a BA imperial oatmeal stout (non-adjuncted) that you would consider great or elite? Velvet Merkin, BORIS? I'm honestly just curious.

Honestly, I don’t really drink any other oatmeal stouts that I even know of. To me, I just compare it to other BA non-adjunct stouts. Everyone seemingly loves to compare BCBS lineup and DW lineup, and I’d take regular BCBS over Deth’s Tar.

To answer @mbockstruck30 ‘s question, I was leaning the same way. I’m not sure I drink too many oatmeal stout but comparing to other non-adjunct barrel stouts I find myself preferring other options, reg BCBS being one of them.

Fair enough. I guess I personally just put Deth's Tar in that same tier. To me the next tier, while still very good, is a large enough step down (eg, Might Meets Right, Imperial Pajamas, Drago, etc, if I'm using local examples). IMHO, Deth blows those away, especially with the complexity.

    Same.

Also, I don't think "good but not great" implies that someone isn't impressed. There are a lot of beers out there that aren't "good." One thing I will give Deth's Tar is that it's probably the best value BA stout out there, and I do find it impressive for the price.

I think one of the strong points of the Deep Woods series is the focus on quality and consistent profiles. Even if you don't think the stouts are "top tier", they're most likely going to be pretty enjoyable. I've been burned by other breweries BBA attempts, but I buy Rev releases with excitement and confidence.

I really agree with this. With seemingly every brewery offering BA beers, I've had my share of ones that left a lot to be desired. With Rev, on the other hand, I've tried every DW beer they've done the past three years. I've never been disappointed and have only been underwhelmed once, with Cuvee de Grace.

Cuvée was very underwhelming. Just had one two nights ago and it wasn’t anything special. I remember liking it more than ten year at the release and now I couldn’t be more wrong lol

I remember being way more excited for Cuvee than Ten Year Beer, then being totally surprised. Just drank my last Ten Year Beer the night it won gold at FOBAB and it was fantastic.

I forget the year it came out, but when it did Half Acre's VIM was one of my beers of the year.

Presale for the general public is Tuesday, Jan 19. The special releases will show up on their web shop some time that morning for orders online. As part of the ordering process, you specify a time window Friday through Sunday when you want to pick up your order. Then show up around that time and drive through the line outside the warehouse/taproom on Kedzie. It's super well done logistically.

Yeah, I had Vim once or twice and I thought it was also in the good but not great category. I’m more hopeful for this collab though.

Agreed. I think VIM is one of the best beers Half Acre has released. Such a unique concept too, with how they aged it
