Jacks Abby brewed this beer quite some time ago and it was quite enjoyable. Sounds like the sister brewery may have missed the mark a bit.

Bright side a signal hop (Citra) Hazy IPA at the local brew pub. This beer is brewed with wheat and oats in the grain bill. Hazy with a thick white head. Strong aroma of citrus. The taste is also citrus with a touch of peach. Soft mouthfeel and a lasting dry finish. An enjoyable brew.

This is the last beer I have from @Pinz412 and the NBS BIF #12. A wild ale from Insurrection Aleworks. As a kid my grandmother used to make like a rhubarb stew that we would eat for dessert with brown sugar on top. I always loved it. This beer only has one rating on BA (3.0). That's definitely too low, IMO, although this beer was a tough one for me to review.

Pours a deep pinkish tan with a thin white head and small bits of lacing.

The smell is tart, funky brett, with a nice fruity strawberry undertone.

The taste is tart up front with a sour finish. There's a hit of earthy brett funk up from l front also. The fruit is not very strong but the rhubarb comes through at the end. There's something astringent throughout that distracts slightly.

The mouthfeel is low carbonation but fizzy and thin with that astringent tasty creeping on to the feel.

Overall this is a tough one. The flavors are very good but the mouthfeel and strange astringent (almost chemical) undertone distracts from the flavors.

Gueuzerie Tilquin - Oude Cassis Tilquin à l'Ancienne

Fruit Lambic with blackcurrants, from Belgium (6.3%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep purple coloration with a medium, fluffy head that fades quickly. Smells of doughy malt and strong aromas of blackcurrant and leathery funk, as well as lighter fruity and spicy yeast esters and just a hint oak.

Taste is an excellent balance of light, doughy wheat malt, quite a vibrant blackcurrant presence, strong leathery and earthy funk, some fruity and spicy esters of red apple, gooseberry, clove and black pepper, as well as some quite tannic oak and just a hint of balsamic vinegar, with a good underlying acidity. Finishes rather dry, with a medium acidity and some blackcurrant, spicy esters and leathery funk lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

An excellent Lambic with a fantastic balance of equally strong and vibrant fruit and funk notes, as well as as distinct, quite tannic, oak and lighter fruity and rather spicy esters, finishing with a great acidity. The dark and bitter character of the blackcurrant just works very well with the leathery funk and tannic oak here, lending a certain vinous, quite earthy quality to this that is further enhanced by some estery spice and just a hint of vinegar.

Overall this makes for a superb, quite complex and full-flavored Lambic with a rather dry and vinous character and a sublime balance of fruit, funk, acidity and spice.

As tempting as it is to drink all of the Ralphius (in the name of science and accurate reviewing, of course), I'm not quite that decadent. I am decadent enough to drink two today, however, and as I'm sharing these with my partner, the Salted Caramel variant seems to be a no-brainer, as she loves salted caramel.

    Courtesy of @JayORear

Interesting, older cans said "with fleur de sel and caramel," while this can doesn't explicitly say caramel. The BA description further confuses things with this: "We heightened the beer's taste of caramel by simply adding a touch of fleur de sel." So ... does it have added caramel? I suspect so, but still; the imprecise language leaves it open to speculation.

My partner found this even more sweet than Ralphius; I do not. I did find it richer and thicker, but more than anything else, it's unbelievably salty. Like, holy hell!

It's as advertised, as well, with plenty of caramel up front, the caramel then returning on the back half with a smooth richness once the salt has released its grip. I get less of the bourbon influence on this one, primarily because of the salt and caramel.

The one thing I suggested would improve Ralphius' body was a touch more thickness - and this has it. The mouthfeel simply could not be better.

This one is probably going to be too salty for some people, but it certainly delivers on the premise. It's not too salty for me; it's right on the edge, though.

Dive IPA is a collaboration between Non-Sequitur Beer Project and I am the Avalanche.
-Golden, but very hazy for a West Coast style IPA, can pour.
The aroma is hop influenced, a bit floral with citrus and pine.
The flavor is full with crisp malt, orange and orange zest and pine, with moderate hop bitterness.
The finish is clean and dry.
This is a really good brew.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Snulip glass canned on 12/16/2020. Pours a dark brown with a finger sticky light brown head that leaves some thin streaks of lace, with solid retention. 4.25

Aroma is roasted malts, maple, cocoa, vanilla, and hints of coffee. 3.75

Taste biscuity roasted malts, cocoa, vanilla, coffee, almonds, and maple and the maple is most dominant, but not by much pretty nicely balanced. 3.75

Mouthfeel is medium, gentle carbonation, maybe a tad dry, and at 7% ABV it drinks that way. 4

Overall this is a solid brew, nothing dazzling but a nice flavored Porter from Woodstock Brewing. 3.75

Tired Hands x Anchorage Brewing Mammon Citra and Vic Secret DIPA. Sounds straightforward enough, although the Instagram post provides a fuller (weirder?) description: "Brewed from the second runnings of a huge Barleywine we have in the works (….more on that in several weeks.) We fermented with our house ale yeast at slightly warmer than usual temperatures, and dry hopped aggressively with hand selected US Citra and pungent Australian Vic Secret." Brewed from the second runnings of a Barleywine? Hmmm . . .

Pours a somewhat typical Tired Hands hazy, but not quite as opaque as usual. Good head that dissipates quickly, although foam is clinging obstinately to the sides of the glass. Aroma is surprisingly berry-like, though with some tropical undertones and something . . . darker? The taste is . . . wow. Incredibly pungent, deep, and again, dark. I say this because I've been using "bright" as a descriptor a lot lately. Amber honey, canned peach syrup, overripe blackberries, even something a little figgy. I don't know if I'm being influenced by knowing this has barleywine in its DNA, but there's definitely something decidedly non-Citra like in its profile. Mouthfeel is ridiculously round and slippery, with a level of carbonation that seems somehow perfect, almost imperial stout-like.

Tired Hands can be really good at these sui generis beers, sometimes better than others. This one is excellent, and I wonder how much of its wonderfulness comes from the collaboration.

    Canned 12/30/20.
    "Promise Me" on can's bottom.
Collaboration with The Vacant Lots, a band originally from Burlington, Vermont.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields a fleeting one inch slightly off-white head over a cloudy golden body with scant lacing. Nose of sweet citrus and tropical fruit with some floral attributes as well. Taste mirrors nose nicely with citrus all day! Real nice feel and overall, a juice bomb I can get behind right here folks! Cheers to the boys on the lakefront in B-Town, Vermont!!

    Hello NBW.
Great start @ChicagoJ I love the Orthodox reference.

    Just had a nice semi-local
The Pupil IPA from Society Brewing in San Diego.

Fluffy white cap rises nearly 2 inches before lazily settling in to a smooth velvety blanket. Light gold in color, slightly hazy. Spotty lacing. Aromas of grass, mango, and citrus. Also, a mellow dankness sneaks in. Flavor follows pretty faithfully with the fruit and grass and dank, but a silky grain note brings just a hint of sweetness and really carries this along gracefully. The finish goes toward a drying bitterness. Mouthfeel is just shy of medium, carbonation is active enough to keep it alive.
    Overall, a totally solid IPA.

Good evening NBW, I hope everyone is safe and going well after the events of this week. Being a teacher was hard this week as I needed to answer questions that students had around what happened, thankfully there was a lot written about how to talk to the students so that help guide me. Some of their questions and comments drained me emotionally, but teaching 11th and 12th graders helped since I could talk to them more like an adult and they seemed to respond well to the information I shared. Anyways thanks for listening to that, let’s get into why we are here, new beers!

Larry I sympathize with you. Albeit my 3rd graders will probably be less pointed in their questions than what you were dealing with. Strange times we are in, but we need to keep ourselves open to dialogue and questions. I remember how hard it was dealing with 9/11 with 1st graders (and their parents!).

These are very strange times, one of the hardest question was a student from Yemen asked me if we were going to have a civil war. It has to be heart breaking addressing it this 3rd graders, I hope they don’t lose too much of their innocence from this. On Thursday I just had to think back to my teachers handled 9/11 on the 12th, I was in 9th grade so I was able to truly remember their example. Good luck to you next week, it is probably still going to be hard too, but like you said we just need to be open to dialogue and questions, cheers!

    Blech.Brut - Quinty

Imperial Stout aged on toasted American oak chips, from Germany (10.4%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of lightly roasted, caramel malt, with some chocolate and quite a sharp woody/spicy aroma also coming through that carries hints of vanilla and frankincense.

Taste is a good balance of slightly roasted, quite caramelly malt, milk chocolate and hints of coffee, red berries and licorice, as well as a distinct, woody and spicy oak presence with hints of vanilla and frankincense. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some caramel malt, chocolate and toasted oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I really wasn't a fan of this at first, but it did come into its own a little more as it warmed. Just like their recent Black NEIPA collaboration with Hertl, this is a rather interesting beer that is pretty enjoyable for its sheer experimental value despite not quite working out perfectly. I think that the woody, toasted character is a bit overdone here, which brings that kinda odd note into this that almost brings frankincense to mind, which mellows as this warms, but underneath that there is a pretty nice Stout with some good chocolate, coffee, vanilla and red berry accents that is just yearning to break free.

Overall, this makes for an interesting and enjoyable brew with a good balance of sweet and bitter notes, as well as a certain complexity to it, although the rather sharp woody presence seems just a bit too assertive here.

Bentonville 1872 Old Fort Lager, 6.0% ABV. This beer is supposed mimic the new all the rage style of beer from and commemorate the opening of the First National Bank in Ft. Smith on the edge of Indian Territory. Also a portion of the proceeds go to feed the needy in Northwest Arkansas; 3.71 overall

Pours a bright & effervescent gold with a pinky of eggshell colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Grassy & doughy, fades down the stretch

T: Follows the nose, sweet grainyness & a little dryness up front. Sweet breadyness, dryness & just a little lemon as this warms. Finishes dry, sweet & crisp

MF: Medium body, crisp carbonation with decent balance

Easy to drink, wish this had a little more hop bitterness

Põhjala / Tempest - Cellar Series: Glen Noble

Scotch Ale with wildflower honey aged in Glen Garioch and Auchentoshan Scotch barrels, from Estonia (13.2%).

Pours a cloudy, reddish mahogany coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of rich caramel malt, toffee, honey and red berries, with hints of vanilla and oak.

Taste is an excellent balance of rich caramel, slightly grainy malt, toffee, wildflower honey, dark fruit and red berries, with notes of fig, plum, cranberry and redcurrant, as well as lighter notes of pear, vanilla and spices, with accents of licorice, clove and black pepper, and just a hint of earthy, tannic, burnt oak. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some toffee, red berries and oak lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and low/medium carbonation.

A very rich, complex and well-balanced Scotch Ale that is dominated by sweeter notes of toffee, honey and dark/red fruits, but features some spicy, woody, lightly smoked accents as well that balance this out perfectly, while the ABV is very well hidden, without a hint of sharp booze to this except for a nice, warming presence in the aftertaste.

Overall, this makes for a very rich and complex sipper with a subtle balance that is perfect for the dark, cold season and probably best enjoyed by a roaring fireplace with a good cigar. Another exceptional barrel-aged brew from Pohjala that is an absolute joy to drink.

How about a little Greater Good TIPA.
    WOOO!!
Pours a hazy golden/amber with a nice foamy 2 finger head with decent retention for the style and lots of sticky lacing.
Aroma is lots of ripe peach, melon, pineapple, orange and some dark berry.
Taste follows with peach being predominant followed by melon and tropical notes. Bitter and sweet balance this 10% behemoth out to be scarily drinkable.
Feel is closer to medium rather than full. Decent carb throught finishing pleasantly bitter with some hop oils coating the tongue. I cant detect alcohol in this. This brewery is killing it right now with these double and triple IPAs. An easy drinking fairly balanced fruit cocktail. Damn good. EDIT: Im saying "WOOO!!!"[IMG]

After a porch bombing this week and receiving a slew of world-class beers (you know who you are), I made a trip today to Transient to secure some big stouts for a return package - and found this beer, which wasn’t on the website when I ordered last night.

In addition to their prowess with big stouts, Transient has a hop game that is on point. This beer (One More Wave featuring the scintillating Simcoe hop) is part of a single-hop series of DIPA’s that celebrates different varietals. As a big fan of Simcoe-hopped beers, I’m pretty excited to try this.

Looks like a glass of grapefruit juice in my glass with a dense oatmeal colored head that provides ample lacing. The nose is led by dank citrus notes and that almost oniony/garlicky aroma associated with Simcoe hops. I happen to love that aroma, so this is right up my alley. There’s also a pine note, so I’m in beer nerd DIPA heaven.

The taste is really dank, with grapefruit and ripe orange flavors mixing with that herbal oniony/garlicky flavor exceptionally well, and accompthe bitter pine flavors. This is absolutely delicious, IMHO.

The mouthfeel is medium and pillowy, per the NE-style, which this beer fits in, and is nicely bitter. I’m a Transient fanboy, and this beer is a prime example why that is the case.
