[IMG] Welcome all to a personal favorite weekly thread. This is the place you grab a beer that you have never had and break it down for us. It can be a long review or short and sweet, but we want to know the look, aroma, taste, feel, and your overall impression of that beer. This thread is a great tool for us beer geeks to hear about a new beer that we should have purchased or to explain to us why we are lucky we passed that one up. I have plenty on hand for the weekend. Remember everyone’s opinion may be different and that is ok.

Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a hazy yellow orange with a finger sticky white head, that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is guava, tangerine, pineapple, honeydew, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows guava, pineapple, tangerine, honeydew, apricot, and some pink grapefruit in the balanced finish. 4

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, soft gentle carbonation, not dry or sticky, maybe a little gritty, and at 7.5% it may drink a little bigger, but goes down plenty easy. 4.25

Overall I haven’t had anything else from this brewery and I would say this is a very nice first impression. I would recommend this one for sure. 4 Fat Orange Cat well done. Cheers all.

This new-to-me brew is Double Pull, an Imperial stout with espresso.
The brew presents opaquely dark from the wan, with a wisp if tan foam that dissipates quickly.
The aroma is light with coffee and sugar notes.
The flavor is rich with espresso, toasted malts and a burnt sugar sweetness. There is some coffee bitterness.
The finish is slick and smooth.
    -a flavorful slow sipper

There are more and more new hop varieties coming out every year and in my homebrewing I am simply not keeping up with the ‘next, new big thing’.

One hop variety I sorta thought about trying out is Comet. Below is how this hop is detailed on the Yakima Valley Hops website:

    “Comet Hops

    Comet Hop Pellet Profile

Despite being around since the early 60's, Comet has seen a recent surge in popularity. Brewers who prefer Comet's lower Alpha Acid (9-12%) and well-rounded flavor profile. Comet is zesty with grapefruit and tangerine, but is backed by some unique grassy and herbal elements. Some brewers describe Comet's unique aroma as "Wild American" that produces one-of-kind beers.

Aroma: Wild notes, citrus fruit, and lemon grass.”

    https://yakimavalleyhops.com/products/comet-hop-pellets

I am not certain what exactly “wild notes” and “Wild American” mean but the aspects of “zesty with grapefruit and tangerine” sounds tasty.

Also, I had no idea that this hop variety has been around so long (early 60’s). I only heard of it recently (the last couple/few years).

There is not a lot of verbiage about this beer on the Firestone Walker website:

“Firestone Propagator Series – Comet – Single Hop Hazy IPA

    Coconut – Floral

From our Propagator R&D brewhouse in Venice, California comes Comet—a limited‑edition release from our new Propagator Series.

    ABV: 5.6%

    IBU: 35

    Color: 7”

    https://www.firestonebeer.com/beer/comet/

Not too much bitterness to this beer (consistent with the Hazy IPA motif I suppose) and the flavors detailed are quite different from what Yakima Valley Hops website detailed. Perhaps an artifact of where these specific hops were grown and when harvested (e.g., a late harvest?).

Well enough writing, time to drink!

Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

A hazy golden/straw colored appearance. There is a two finger white head with nice retention.

    Aroma:

I am picking up mostly citrus (e.g., tangerine).

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with citrus (e.g., tangerine). There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

This beer had a medium body with dry finish. The mouthfeel is not smooth which I would typically associate with the Hazy IPA substyle.

    Overall:

This beer is quite good. A nice, refreshing beer. This beer would be a pleasant summertime sipping beer.

FWIW I personally did not perceive any coconut or floral in this beer.

    Cheers!

A quiet Saturday. Maybe I'll take the Christmas lights down today.
I can't believe I've never had this beer before.
A dark copper color with a small off-white head that left a little bit of lace.
Aroma of citrus, sweet malt, a little bit of pine.
Taste of grapefruit, caramel, light pine.
    Not too hoppy.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz tulip glass not sure when it was canned. Pours orange, with a half finger white head and that was a very aggressive pour to get that little head. 3.75

Aroma sweet white chocolate, faint coffee grounds, toffee, and vanilla. 3.5

Taste follows white chocolate, hints of coffee, toffee, and vanilla slightly metallic and pretty underwhelming. 3.5

Mouthfeel is thin, under carbonated, not dry, and at 9% it drinks much smaller. 3

Overall glad it was just a single, exactly what singles are made for. Glad I am not stuck with 3 more of them. 3.25

Good morning (afternoon by the time this post goes live), New Beer Weekenders! I've got a fantastic slew of new beers ahead of me - finally - and may be getting to a special beer for review #3000. We'll see how I feel; I don't normally tick 10 beers in the weekend, but sometimes I do, so ... we'll see, like I said.

Post-run, I'm starting off big: No Third Eye, a collaboration between Transient and New Image (never heard of the latter).

No Third Eye is a 10% ABV "Triple Dry Hopped Double India Pale Ale." @ovaltine sent me a ton of amazing Transient stouts in NBS BIF #12, but thankfully not many of their IPAs, as I actually get them fairly frequently at my "local." (This won't be the only Transient IPA I try out this weekend.)

The extreme dry hopping leads to a nose dominated by hops, despite the huge malt base, which itself comes barely comes across with notes of honey and white bread. Hop tones are primarily tropical with a bit of citrus for balance, as well as bright herbs and mild dankness.

Flavor follows, with the malt base providing a perfect level of weight and sweetness. The result is a hop-forward brew that doesn't just seem juicy; it is juicy. Mango, pineapple, melon, grapefruit, orange, and lemon. Really nice, and reminiscent of Heady and Tree House IPAs in the way it presents more than just an impression of fruit juice; a non-craft beer drinker would probably straight up assume that there is actual fruit in this beer.

    Really damn nice.

Thanks for kicking the show off this morning @SawDog505 !

Today's selection is one that slipped away from me, but bottle conditioning and refrigeration since I rescued from the singles section at the store a few months ago hopefully kept this one in good shape.

    Deschutes Black Butte Porter

Bottle Notes: 12 ounces bottled July 20, 2020, 30 IBUs, 5.5% AB, bottle conditioned. Soft breeze. Sturdy roots. Savor a smooth and unexpectedly complex porter that's stood the test of time.

Appearance: Very dark brown pour, creamy bubbly tan head lingers for a few minutes before leaving clumpy lacing and a creamy layer over the base. 4.0

    Aroma:
Pleasant and strong roast chocolate malt, grassy floral hop back. Slightly sweet. 3.5

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma, though lighter in strength. Light chocolate malt taste, sweetness balanced by hops, still edges sweet. 3.25

    Mouthfeel:
Light thin body, faint carbonation, dry and chalky, easy clean finish. 3.0

    Overall:
This is a good porter, not sure if fresher would have improved the quality and scores. 3.25

Have one more July beer for tomorrow, thought its an Imperial Stout refrigerated the entire time.

    Cheers!

Wow, absolutely incredible to have waited so long to have Centennial! I can only assume that is partially due to Founders' distro back in the day.

When I first had (and reviewed) Centennial, it was one of the most incredible hop aromas I'd ever had on a beer. 8 years later I've had many, many IPAs that personally top it for me, but that's always the memory that immediately sticks out every time I see that beer: how that aroma simply blew me away back in the day.

Next up, going back to the beer advent calendar (I'm still behind a day, as well): Erl Hell.

A quick look at the brewery shows they have both Erl and Erlkönig Hell, with a whopping difference of 0.1% between them. Elf and Elf-King (with the obvious inference to the classic Die Erlkönig, which I've had the pleasure to professionally sing and unprofessionally play, but not in a long damn time). I wonder if these are really just the same beer. No matter.

Straight up: this is a wonderfully balanced, crisp, incredibly drinkable Helles. I like it a lot, and it's one of the more balanced Helles I've had in a while. There is a slight minerality both on the nose and the palate that detracts, but that's just about my only complaint. I'll enjoy every sip I have left.

+9.1%? What the hell? Apparently I like this style a bit more than most (no surprise, really, given that my Spaten Helles review is +13%). I'm just not sure what other people are looking for out of a Helles, because for me, this delivered.

Black Butte is one of my favorite porters. It's one that I hadn't in the past noticed suffered too greatly from age, but I'm not sure I've let any go 6 months. Be curious if you get a fresher one if you still don't like it, which is quite possible.

[IMG] A nice sour from Modestman Brewing. Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass canned on 12/16/2020. Pours a very attractive pinkish purple with a 2 finger pink head, that settles rather quickly. 4.5

Aroma raspberry, cranberry, blackberry, blueberry, and vanilla. 4

Taste follows all about the berries, raspberry is most dominant with some nice vanilla hints in the lingering finish. 4

Mouthfeel is almost medium, a tad dry, plenty of prickly carbonation, and at 4% loaded with flavor but goes down easy enough. 4

Overall this is a really nice and attractive sour. Not my favorite style, but am trying to sip them a little more often lately. 4

Time for another Transient IIPA - and this time, one I had to add to the database (along with a pizza lunch (unpictured)).

    Rememberable

This is a very, very different IIPA than No Third Eye. That one was all about hop juice; this one is all about hop herbal and dank tones. No Third Eye has a 10% malt base that comes across as sweet and doughy, lending a perfect juice-like element to the hop tones; Rememberable has a grainy malt expression, not nearly as sweet, and if anything emphasizing the green character of the hops.

The one thing that is unquestionably exceptional: the mouthfeel. It's creamy, thick, lively, with a near perfect balance of sting and smoothness.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34258/529991/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.97 / added to database

For some, this hop expression might be phenomenal. For my palate, it's very well crafted, but ultimately not what I seek in an IPA.

Clear amber body; excellent carbonation presence; head starts fairly thick then settles into a thin yet lasting cap of fairly creamy white foam; partial sheets and rings of foam stick to the glass. Smell starts with a decent bit of tropical fruit notes then fades rapidly. Excellent tastes; light, biscuit-like malt base with a light sweetness and moderate hop bitterness overall; clean. Medium body; crisp with a delicate partial sweetness at first; delivers a slightly dry finish.

This is a simple yet ultimately satisfying west coast styled IPA. It brings a nice, balanced and subtle complexity to the palate.
    ----------
This is the first of three crowlers I picked up in my old home town of Mansfield, OH just over a week ago.

I wasn't sure what kind of IPA this would be. In many ways, I was leery of it being a hazy IPA offering. I was pleasantly surprised to see it pour out clear with a dark golden body. I should have taken a picture of the chalkboard at the brewery that listed the hops used for this beer, but as happens every so often, I got distracted and never did.

Any how, the beer is a fine, straightforward American IPA offering. I'll consider this my gateway beer to getting primed for NFL playoff football later on this afternoon...
