One sip, everybody knows the rules.

(Okay, there may be new folks checking in this week so here are the rules. This is a great thread to checkout and try out new beers. These can be new beers to the entire world, or beers which have been around for awhile (or forever) that are new to you that you are enjoying this weekend for the first time.

Pictures are encouraged, the name of the beer and brewer, and a description of how the beer looks, smells, tastes, feels are what we are looking for here, and your overall thoughts. You may take more than one sip. Friendly commentary about the beers at hand are encouraged, music accompaniments, TikTok dance routines and other non beer beverages and distractions can also be checked at the door.
    )

Hope everyone is staying warm and has new beers on hand. I'm still working through the threads of last weekend, quite a level of activity with the great barleywine tasting thread. I plan to be ambitious with drinking and reading this weekend. First up, one of two NEIPAs planned for today, this one from Williamston, Michigan.

    Old Nation - Cart Horse

    Can notes:
New Orthodox India Pale Ale Series, NEIPA. 16 oz canned 12/4/20 @ 8:06:59, multiple pours into a shaker pint glass. Hope the brewers are morning people.7% ABV, 60 IBU. Malt: Pils, Vienna, Munich, Wheat & Oat. Boil Hops: Equinox and Mosaic. Dry Hop: Mosaic, Citra and what I picked this up for Amarillo. Love all the info Old Nation provides.

Appearance: Darker orange tan colour, generous off-white head builds quickly lingers for a few minutes leaving light clumpy lacing on the glass and above part of the top. 3.75

    Aroma:
Strong tang orange juice, mango and pineapple on the tropical fruit side, pine backs after a few more whiffs, much lighter than the dominant citrus/tang. 3.5

Taste: This is a sweet on first sip, though bitterness emerges as I continue. Thankfully more citrus than Tang, though the other fruit aromas are muted. Like the pine which is also stronger than the aroma. Overall sweet trumps bitter with this one, less balanced than other Old Nation beers I've had but still pleasant and manageable. I do enjoy the second half of this beer more so than the first impression. 3.75

    Mouthfeel:
Very dry, though pleasant for my taste. Thin body, nominal carbonation, light creaminess, easy drinking, clean finish. 3.75

    Overall:
This is a solid NEIPA, the taste range is narrow but pleasant, light, crisp and easy. Don't take one sip, enjoy the whole can. 3.75

See you later today with a beer from the Chicago burbs, and an appropriate food pairing.

[IMG] Thank you @ChicagoJ for kicking this one off this weekend! Night Shift Wide Awake a coffee imperial Porter canned on 1/07/2021. Pours a very attractive near pitch black with a solid finger sticky light brown head that leaves thin streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is Expresso beans, vanilla, dark chocolate, and toffee. Very simple but extremely nice. 4.5

Taste follows fresh coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, and toffee just really really tasty. 4.5

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, soft creamy carbonation, maybe a little dry and it works perfectly, and at 8.1% extremely approachable and easy drinking. 4.5

Overall I can see myself getting more of this one. The name says it all and I am really digging it. Cheers all. 4.5 Plenty of new beers on deck for the weekend.

    A retired beer! :slight_frown:

Today’s ‘new’ beer is actually a very old beer: Victory Storm King Imperial Stout.

Several years ago Victory Brewing Co. made a business decision to no longer produce this beer for distribution. That was a very sad decision for me since Storm King was one of my favorite Imperial Stouts. When fresh this beer had a very notable hop profile and I have read many BAs opine that this beer when fresh is akin to a Black IPA.

I bought a case (24 bottles) of this beer five years ago for drinking enjoyment over a period of years. I will confess that I drank most of these beer young (less than a year of age) but I do have one bottle left. On the bottle it lists “ENJOY BY: 02 NOV 2020”. So, this last bottle it a few months past the recommended date but I have stored these beers cool in my basement so I have no worries here.

Since this is a very special bottle of Storm King I will be sharing this beer with my wife.

Served in two small Duvel tulip glasses:

    Appearance:

Very dark brown approaching black in color with a tan head.

    Aroma:

Wow! There is a lot going on here, a complex combination. There is some dried dark fruits aromas (e.g., fig, raisins, dried plums,…), some toffee, a hint of licorice,…

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a complex combination of flavors: dried dark fruits, toffee, licorice, dark chocolate,…no one flavor dominates. There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Soft, medium bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is excellent. I have in the past preferred this beer fresh with its notable hop aroma/flavor but after 5+ years of cellaring this aged beer was equally excellent albeit in a very different way.

    Cheers!

    Good morning NBW
Dryish January set me behind on some reviews. This was a new release from Taxman back in December
    [IMG]
    Description from the can:
Embrace Bear Hug, our special gingerbread-cookie-inspired brown ale with spices. Sweet, robust and roasted dark malts are cuddled together with earthy honey, zesty ginger, spicy cinnamon and smooth vanilla, making this ale the ultimate acquisition of the season.

    My review:
12oz canned 12/09/20 poured into a snifter at just above fridge temp 9% ABV 26 IBU. The beer pours bright, light to medium brown in color with chestnut highlights and abundant tan colored head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a web of lacing. The aroma is mild cinnamon up front and lesser notes of vanilla and honey. The taste is semisweet gingerbread cookie. Ginger, cinnamon, vanilla are integrated into a malt & honey sweet base. Minimal bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. The ginger and cinnamon pull this one right back on the finish so there's no lingering sweetness. Overall, very good. I'm not normally a fan of "desert" inspired beer, but this nails the gingerbread cookie mentioned on the label, without sticky or lingering sweetness.

Taxman has a talent for balance across their lineup. Subtle barrel aging, perfectly balanced spices & taking inspiration from sweets without producing a sickly sweet product. I'm not sure how much balance and restraint earn street cred in today's craft world, but I am always happy to have steady access to their beers. Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

Hey all! I'm entering this submission for NBW #29. Had it last night so forgive the lack of "right nowness" but damn this was good. Cheers.

New Image Big Nelson Energy. 9.5% - a huge, tropical, dry, foamy NEIPA/DIPA.
Spoiler: It's stunning. More? Read on....

4.35/5 rDev 0% (first review for the beer on BA)
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

L - Glowing orange density, smaller head, less lacing than I would have expected.

S - Typical giant Nelson hop smell notes, and this one is aaaallllll Nelson. You smell it, too - think of jacked up Sauvignon Blanc grapes with the best Kush weed smells, with some depth of guava and tropical dry melons in there too. A little berry effect as well.

T - Explodes and full palate impact here. More of the tropics, with enough dryness it doesn't go sweet-imperial, but stays a true double-qua-triple IPA. Again, more white grapes-dankness-weed-is-melon-berries on the tongue. This is impressive...and just damn delicious.

F - Great mouthfeel, a good balance between NEIPA creamy and rich, and enough dryness, I don't get a lactose/sweet impression either. Good acidity, more on the citric juice side. Lovely.

O - Another giant DIPA, single hop feature by New Image that doesn't fail to impress. Jeebus.

Good morning, New Beer Weekenders! Check out the cut below the review for the official announcement of the NBS BIF! But before we get to that, let's get to the first new beer of the weekend: Mocha Snowed In, a bourbon barrel aged imperial oatmeal stout (12.4% ABV) with chocolate and coffee from Copper Kettle Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado.

BLUF: this just didn't do it for me; I'm coming in wildly below rDev.

The head completely dissipated almost immediately, and unsurprisingly, that translated to a flat, slick, dead mouthfeel. The flavors lacked any richness from the malt base, and the bourbon and coffee combined for a berry-like, earthy transition early on in the sip that, while not unpleasant, just didn't quite work (not without more strength from the malt - and at such a high ABV, not getting more strength from the malt base is fairly inexcusable).

The chocolate is a good balance between semi-sweet and bitter, but it's pushed way into the background from the sharp bourbon mash and the coffee. The nose, while not exactly what I expected, was pleasant enough, but almost none of the toasty, brown sugary malt base made it to the palate. Perhaps with a better mouthfeel, that would have been different - but I can only review the beer in my glass, naturally.

That lack of bite is huge, too; you can easily swish and savor the sip, with the only feedback mechanism being the boozy heat from the high ABV, but it makes it feel dead, and the earthier flavors just sit on your palate.

Is it bad? No, not really; I'll finish my half (~11 oz). But there's a wide gulf between this and the excellent, outstanding, and world class BBA stouts out there.

And now, the official announcement for NBS BIF #13!!!

Yes, it's coming! Look for the sign-up thread this week (depending on how much @2beerdogs and I drink this weekend, it could drop at any time :stuck_out_tongue: ).

We are targeting an official share date of April 11th. This will give us roughly 3-4 weeks for the sign up thread, and 4-5 weeks for Hints, Hauls, and Shenanigans.

So if you're in this thread (and you are, if you're reading this), and you post in this thread, if you're interested, look for the sign-up thread! I'll post a link in NBW once it's live (either later this weekend, or next). There are requirements for participation (which will be made very clear in the sign up thread), but the only requirements to join are: be active in NBW, and (if you're a newcomer) have a current member vouch for you.

Hopefully we can get some of our old guard back for this round.

    Cheers!

    New Beer #2
My LBS must have caught a deal from a distributor because a bunch of Evil Twin beers showed up priced to move. $3 for a bomber of maple syrup barrel stout? Yes...
Some People are Immune to Good Advice Maple Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout

22oz undated bottle poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at fridge temp 10.7% ABV. The beer pours dense black with no light penetration and minimal light brown head. The head recedes to a single layer of bubbles. No lacing. The aroma is mild with caramel, maple and roasted malt. The taste is semisweet maple with roasted malt and booze moving in fast. Mild to moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, good. Not sure when this was bottled, but nothing is off. Boozey and fairly straightforward with the maple.

Speaking of good advice, I probably need to slow my pace. I'll be back eventually with another new beer. Cheers all!

Thank you, @ChicagoJ, for getting. the thread off to a good start.
My new beer for today is another one from my birthday beer club membership. This one is Snow Queue, a "juice bomb IPA with pomegranate and black currant." It is brewed by Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery in collaboration with Beer Drop (who, not coincidently, are the purveyors of my beer gift).
The beer is an opaque magenta color with no head.
Aroma is muted, some sweet fruit and some citrus.
Taste is also on the quiet side. Grapefruit, sweet fruit.
    More sweet than hoppy.

Good (early) afternoon, and I'm back and changing things up. This beer is Cocoa Berry, an "Imperial Pastry Sour" from Prairie Artisan Ales that clocks in at 7.9%. You may love or hate the current pastry and fruited sour craze(s), but to Prairie's credit, at least they're fully embracing it here.

From the can: "Sour ale with orange, lemon, lime, raspberry, blueberry, grapefruit, cacao nibs, and toasted marshmallow flavor."

From me: "...the kitchen sink approach results in a muddled melange of flavors instead of anything distinct and unique."

BLUF: it's enjoyable and tasty, but this is a case where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

The nose is absolutely wonderful and inviting, and I found myself drawn in. Sadly, that's without question the peak. It's not very sour, for starters - which a fruited sour doesn't have to be, but they explicitly advertised this as a sour ale in two different ways. I'm missing that pucker you get from a good sour.

The malt base, cacao, and marshmallow combine to provide a toasty, grainy framework for the fruit, not unlike a slightly sweet dessert cracker (or English cookie) with a bit of chocolate and salt. On top of that, you get a smear of berries, and a muddled citric note - grapefruit stands out just a touch, but the orange and lemon are really lost together.

The thicker body doesn't bother me; it's 7.9%, and labeled "Imperial Pastry Sour," so I wasn't expecting a thin, crushable kettle sour. Still, you may find that's not to your liking. I too would prefer a thinner body on a sour ale like this, but I'm not going to penalize them for truth in advertising.

Overall, is this tasty? Sure. Will I go back and buy more? No.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30356/533389/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.87 (sole rating/review)

The final weighted score is heavily influenced by the wonderful nose; I gave it a 3.5 overall, which is more in line with my experience.

    Cheers!

Miskatonic Brewing, a hyper local brewery to me, has been releasing standard base beers in a "Hello My Name Is" series. I assume it is a seasonal and educational experience for their brewers and customers alike. They have also been experimenting with a Small Cellar Series of one-offs with experimentation in aging techniques.
This entry to New Beer Weekend is a combination of the two series.

Bonjou on M'Lome - Small Cellar Series
    [IMG]
Their website describes the base, released in cans, as:
"Belgian Strong Golden ABV 9.4% IBU: 29
A base of genuine Belgian Pilsner malt, Belgian Candi Sugar, and area- correct Belgian yeast produce lively doughy malt characteristics terminating in a complex dry snap of citrus, spice, and the subtle fruity sting of high alcohol."

They bottled some and untapped includes this description:
"Separated from the main batch weeks before the original "Golden Strong" went to cans, the next offering from our cellar series is an ultra-traditional presentation of Belgian ale.
Having undergone a second slow refermentation in the bottle, expect this version to deliver all the qualities of the original with increased complexity and amplified vivacity from much higher champagne-like carbonation and live active yeast. While our cans are meant to be enjoyed fresh as possible, a bottle like this can wait and evolve (at proper cellar temps) until the perfect occasion strikes."

A really nice, standard belgian strong. The main differences between this and the canned base is an almost nose-tickling carbonation and amped up fruitiness. I will be getting more soon to put under the stairs.
    Salud!

Pulling out a second NEIPA today, one aptly named to pair with my Italian Beef Sammich featuring Chicago suburban favorites Caputo's Italian Beef, Rolls and Cheddar Cheese, and Marconi's Hot Giardiniera.

Today's beer also comes from the suburbs, though further South.

    Can Notes:
16 ounces canned 11/30/20, multiple pours into a shaker pint glass. 7.5% ABV, Simcoe Hopped Double India Pale Ale. Tasting notes Ripe Berry, Dank Greens and Sweet Grapefruit, brewed in Bedford Park, ILL (5 Rabbits previous brewery).

Appearance: Light orange white haze, creamy generous white bubbly and creamy head leaves generous soapy lacing in its wake.4.0

    Aroma:
Bold and pleasant aromas, grapefruit leads, citrus and lemon back well, pineapple, mango as well. 4.25

    Taste:
Taste follows aroma, very sweet grapefruit citrus lead, lemon, pineapple and blackberries back. Light bitterness and dankness felt into the pour, but tingly citrus sweetness wins out. 3.75

    Mouthfeel:
Light to medium body, negligible carbonation, creamy, tingly sweetness throughout, slightly dry and dank, easy clean finish and drinking. 4.25

Overall: This is a solid NEIPA, sweeter than my preference, but bold and pleasant tasting, with light dry and bitter notes trying to contain the sweetness, but unable to live up to the task. Would definitely drink again, but not necessarily seek out ahead of more balanced options. 4.0

Catching up on the thread now. Likely last beer until tomorrow, when I shift gears and start with a Chicago Tavern Beer sold at the brewery in Chicago, but actually brewed like Old Nation Brewery in the state of Michigan.

My third new beer of the weekend is a bit curious, and if any Atlanta-area BAs can give some more information, I can use it to update the database.

You see, this beer is Crescendo, a hazy IPA from Creature Comforts that has been around for about half a decade. However, when I reviewed it in late 2017, the hop load was El Dorado, Galaxy, and Grungeist - and it was delectable!

This can, however, is El Dorado, Cashmere, and Strata. Both clock in at 7.2%. Neither the can nor the website suggest that the hop load rotates each year (it is now listed as a seasonal beer between January and February, although my review from 2017 was in October, so that much at least has changed).

So: rotating hop series annually? Or did the beer recipe change at some point? It's not a beer that gets a lot of reviews, so it's hard to tell for sure. Regardless, I'll be reviewing it as a new beer. If it turns out the hop recipe has permanently changed, I'll merge the two beers; if it's different every year, it probably warrants a new entry each iteration.

    Anyway, onto the beer!

One thing hasn't changed: this IPA is absolutely bursting with juicy hop tones, primarily citrus, along with bright garden herbs and a fairly strong dankness (entirely complementary, however). Previously the Galaxy hops stood out, but I feel they've definitely dialed it in on the El Dorado here.

Lemon notes burst from the glass from feet away; up close, it's more pungent, with basil, weed, and parsley, but still plenty of citrus notes.

On the palate, it's no less juicy, carrying a heck of a wallop for a 7.2% ABV IPA. More citrus, but not sharp or acidic; not a lot of tropical (which is often paired with dank notes in my experience). Wonderfully smooth mouthfeel.

My overall weighted score wound up almost identical to the first go-round, albeit via a different path.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34456/533414/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.35 / added to database

(My review in 2017 came out to 4.32, dropped by a relatively poor appearance with several chunky floaties.)

    Cheers!

Smells of doughy, slightly bready malt and a wonderful quite vibrant mélange of fruity, herbal, spicy and floral aromas, with notes of cranberry, apple, thyme, nutmeg and heather.

Taste is an excellent balance of doughy, slightly bready malt, fruity and spicy yeast esters and herbal and spicy elements, with the slightly tart fruity and spicy notes of cranberry, red apple, white grape, citrus peel, nutmeg, ginger, cardamon and lemongrass dominating, as well as lighter herbal notes of thyme and sage, with some floral heather and elderflower accents and a hint of cane sugar as well. Finishes semi-dry, with a light tartness and some cranberry, nutmeg, thyme and elderflower lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a medium body and strong carbonation.

This is a fantastic Saison that boasts an incredible range of fruity, spicy, herbal and floral notes, as well as a great balance of mildly tart, sweet and bitter impressions. At first it all seems a little much, but as you drink this you really come to appreciate the complexity and nuance of all the different, quite vibrant and expressive, elements here. It starts out a little sweet and floral, with a distinct, lightly tart and fruity presence as well, but then the herbs and spices kick in, leading to a semi-dry and slightly bitter finish that is followed by a rich, lingering aftertaste.

Quite full-bodied as well, with a velvety, effervescent mouthfeel and lively carbonation. While this is not your typical, laid-back and mellow Saison, its boldness of flavor and somewhat unusual flavor profile really make this stand out to me as one the most fascinating and enjoyable Saisons I've ever had from Fatôme or in general, for that matter. As an interesting sidenote, hops are not listed as an ingredient on the label.

Saw this in 4 packs this week, I thought " I'll wait until they're in singles" sounds like a sound choice by me, for a change.

My next new beer is You Gotta Horchata, a Prairie / Open Bottle collaboration that clocks in at 10.8% ABV.

Imperial stout with cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar

My partner had her bottle last night, and said (paraphrasing): it's like most big Prairie stouts, but with a lot of cinnamon.

That's actually my main complaint from the handful of Prairie stouts that use cinnamon. They brew wonderful, thick, high ABV base stouts, but they can be heavy handed with the cinnamon. Then again, for this beer in particular, that's about spot on.

The vanilla is quite present on the nose, but not nearly as noticeable on the palate. Then again, there's a lovely stout malt base expressed in notes of toast, espresso, chocolate, molasses, and licorice that doesn't quite shine through on the nose.

The cinnamon, on the other hand, is dominant on the nose, and almost equally prominent on the palate. It quickly asserts itself, and by mid sip, it's easily the most noticeable flavor.

For a Horchata-influenced beer, this really, really works for me. That said, you've definitely got to be in the mood for it. This is not a stout for any occasion. Set your expectations appropriately, and you should find it more than lives up to the name.
