Also note, since the thread title has been changed, that Wayfinder and Grape Lotion already collabed on one of these (per the linked article), so the Wayfinder/Ecliptic collab is not the actual introduction of the "style".

My read was that the "style" of cold IPA in general (because this.beer isn't the first one with the moniker) uses adjuncts freely, but that this specific beer in the article only uses pilsner malt. Rereading it though it isn't clear at all. Shoddy copy indeed

So, in a not surprising turn of events, I know the guy who runs WBB. On the blogs FB page there is a lively discussion of a lot of the same things we're talking about. My favorite comment is this: "So an Imperial India Pale Adjunct Lager".

    Yup, 'bout sums it up.

    Agreed!

I’m all for fun naming conventions!

I could see Cold IPA—even better, in all caps: COLDIPA (TASTE THE CHILLLLL)—becoming a thing, branding wise.

Aside, although tangentially relevant: anytime I saw the term “brut ipa” I thought of that terrible men’s cologne. Would brut IPAs still be a thing with another name?

Wut, you wouldn't be into a Brut Reynolds IPA?

It sounds like it could be good. It just seems like the kind of thing Jack's Abby has been doing for a while, yet labeled an ale for...reasons.

Oh Jesus, give me a break. Lol
Tired of the IPA haze craze, and now this BS.

If you liked bruts and you get dustbowl distribution I've enjoyed their DOUBLE brut IPA. It's at least twice as any other bruts I ever encountered

So, if they used an ale yeast would it be a “Hot IPA”?

Kind of surprised (and disappointed) this beer isn't seeing more widespread release. At least so far, the beer is only available at Wayside brewery. Several craft beer stores have told me they expect to get in cans at some point, but so far I haven't seen it available anyplace around town (here in PDX).

They might be making the batches for distro at Ecliptic. Brew the proof of concept batches at Wayfinder, on a smaller system, then start brewing on the bigger system for packaging.

The WBB article said it would see distro in Ecliptics distro system.

Hope so. I know it's only been a little over a week since you posted this, but I thought for sure it would be out in distribution by now.

So, I'm at Roscoe's over on the East side with a glass of this beer (draft version). While one could argue that there are some subtle lager nuances in the flavor profile, it largely resembles many of the hazy hybrids we see here in the NW. By that I mean it looks like a WCIPA and has some decent bitterness on the finish, but also has a lot of the gushing citrus and tropical fruit (albeit a bit on the dry side) I associate with hazy IPA'S. It's a nice beer, but there's nothing particularly distinctive about it. At least I'm not picking up anything particularly unusual or distinctive.

It's a good beer, but isn't something I'd go out of my way to obtain or drink.

I wouldn't recommend running down to the local travel agency to get an air ticket to fly out here and try it. :sunglasses:
