I hate to say this, but I am just not into the "holiday" beers. Seasonal beers are cool with me, IE a wheat ale in the summer by a company that does not always produce one. I can't stand all the pumpkin beers and MOST Christmas Ales. To me, it has to stand up on its own to be a quality product. IE, I would drink a Penn Brewery Nut Roll Ale anytime! Celebration by SN, AWESOME any day!

You are certainly not alone. I feel the same way, and I have nothing against seasonal beers—just can't stand overly spiced, cloying pumpkin ales and winter warmers. I'm also not terribly into doppelbocks and some other traditionally seasonal styles, but they don't seem to be quite the fad that pumpkin and winter beers have turned into.
I like to say it frequently and with gusto :-)

Hahaha fair enough . . . I really don't mind them from time to time, I really enjoyed Great Lakes' The Doppelrock when that was still around (remember, it's being replaced by a DIPA this spring). I'm just not crazy about them, it's not something I typically seek out.

But imagine how many shitty, overblown examples there would be on the market if they were as seasonally popular as pumpkin ales!

I think well done seasonal beers, especially pumpkin ales, are fairly rare.

No worries, just two more weeks and we will be getting Spring seasonals.

So what you are saying is Pumpkin ales are bad? Shit. I need to re-do my good beer vs. bad beer spreadsheet.

    Top 3 bad beers.
    1. Wild Ales
    2. Lambic
    3. Gueuze

    Top 3 good beers.
    1. Winter Warmers
    2. Pumpkin ales
    3. Chili beers.

    Cheers!

Oh and I just prefer maibocks to doppels, I think—a little lighter, brighter, and hoppier.

    Hahahaha MY LIFE IS SHATTERED!

Will someone just brew a black, rye, sour, chili-pumpkin ale already? Aged in bourbon barrels, of course. Someone is going to lap up every last drop, and to that guy / gal, good for you dude.

Hmmmm.....I do have some friends that homebrew. Or I can just call Jester King. They might wanna get down on this. I mean they did do the Weasel Rodeo with Mikkeller.

    Cheers!

If you had ever had Hill Farmstead Twilight of the Idols, you might change your mind. Come to think of it, you probably should call it a fall solstice/winter seasonal.

You just might enjoy Southern Tier's Krampus then, if you were inclined to give a 'Holiday' beer a shot- it certainly leans heavily in that direction.

I had Krampus a couple of years ago and definitely enjoyed it. I'd like to revisit it, for sure.

I'm not gonna lie, Gotlandsdricka sounds like the most confusing beer I've ever heard of, but it seems to be getting some decent feedback if you're up for something completely different. A sour, smoked Sahti, basically.

As much as I love Celebration, if they put the exact same beer in a different bottle and sold it all year it would not be as good. There is something about only having it durring this time of year that adds to the expiriance.

Are you saying people only drink pumpkin ales because they get swept up in Autumn fever? I don't follow your logic here.

I think people who don't like holiday beers are people who don't like Belgian beers. Belgian brewers put out awesome Christmas beers every year, with very few duds.

Yes! Awesome beer...I wish they would put it in 4 packs or 6ers

I feel the same way, yet i still buy them up. There's something about them, even if mediocre at times, that just makes this time of year that much more enjoyable.

I find many holiday brews festive, comforting and refreshing. They also remind me that I don't have to worry about yardwork or swampass for a few months.
