IMO the bourbon characters this year are much stronger, making this year's version better than last. I do think the aroma is a little tamer this year, but the flavor in general is stronger, more complex and with a much bigger bourbon barrel presence. Curious to see if others feel the same. I have only had 2011 and 2012 vintages.
Thin and underwhelming compared to previous versions, that's what we are supposed to say about every release this year right?
To me it tastes the same every year. I drank a 2012 last night and it was harsh and unbalanced. It's amazing what at least 1 year does for this beer. This one gets soooooo much better with age. If I get another case next year I won't even drink one fresh. I have learned my lesson after 3 years in a row.
They sent a couple dozen cases to stores in Portland, so if you're still looking for a bottle or two it should be easy to trade for.
It's making the rounds in a few Seattle stores too. Not that I'm volunteering the one bottle I picked up.
This year is the first time I've been able to get a bottle. If more people are in agreement with you, I'll be sure to crack it sooner rather than later.
I've only had an 09 and an 11 and the 09. I drak the 09 first in 2011 then sought out more and got he 2011. Definitely a different beer fresh vs aged. I feel the same way about Schlafly's Oak aged BW; give it a couple years and its amazing. Its just so hard to wait.
I had a 2010 about two months ago and thought it was fantastic, but I was sort of amazed that it hadn't totally mellowed out the booze in it yet. I opened a 2012 thinking that it was going to be almost undrinkable... and I thought it was freaking fantastic. I could see it developing with some age, but I am not going to purposefully sit on this one.
I know it's from my own state and I should be peeing myself with excitement, but I don't find particularly much to rave about with the current vintages.
Ive had 2010, 2011, 2012. 2010 is amazing vintage, its the best. MoaS is a beer that is a very good beer to age. Its always got some harshness that times smooths you.
