[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass canned on 2/15/2021. Pours a hazy orange with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.25

Aroma boysenberry, peach, passionfruit, tangerine, and lemon rind. 4

Taste follows boysenberry, passionfruit, tangerine, peach, and a hint of lemon drop in the interesting finish. 4.25

Mouthfeel is medium, soft gentle carbonation, not dry or sticky, and at 7.5% it goes down rather easy. 4

Overall this is a very interesting NEIPA, very curious what hop combination brings out these flavors. Would recommend. 4

Today’s new beer is DDHopped Green City from Other Half.
-cloudy dull orange can pour with a tall, white foam cap and a pine and orange blossom aroma.
The flavor follows the nose and includes a strong pine-resin aspect. The hop bitterness is moderate to high, and persists in the finish.
    The mouthfeel is smooth.
This is very good, but the label is difficult to image.

Stonington also happens to house the best brewery in Connecticut, Beer'd (no offense to Fox Farm and NEBCO).

An absolutely beautiful area. Outside of Rhode Island, I'm not sure I've seen a more enticing coastline that is simultaneously nearly unenjoyable 75% of the year due to water temperature.

Mildly cloudy golden yellow body; excellent carbonation; thick and foamy head. Excellent floral notes in the smell; tropical fruit; pineapple and papaya; pine resin. Beautiful citrus and yellow stone fruit flavors backed with a fine hop bitterness; lemon and orange; zesty, phenolic hop bitterness. Medium body; crisp with a pseudo-juiciness; has a fairly dry quality midway through and lasting through the finish.

I didn't really pick up any distinctive rye flavors or spiciness with this one. The beer is pretty solid overall, though, with a crisp and bracing usage of the hops.
    -----------
This is a fine lead-off beer for the day. As suggested in my review - it's tasty and hits the spot.

...and a nice beer to get me started on homemade beef stroganoff...Mrs. BeerGoot got the recipe and planned on making it for tonight. But she often forgets to read and understand how long some of these things take. The recipe will take over four hours to complete, yet she's run-off to go furniture shopping with a good friend of hers. But that's why I'm a stay-at-home beer drinker and former short-order cook (plus I read a lot - like her recipe). So with time on my hand, I've got the base ingredients (beef, mushrooms, onions, garlic and bay leaf, and mustard) simmering on the stove top. She can fix up the cream sauce and noodles...

Time for another beer and more tuneage...

    Anchorage Blessed

Pours a little oily, pitch black in color with a small dark brown head, which recedes to a thin layer of lacing almost instantaneous.

This smells of wood enriched dark chocolate, fudge covered molasses and toasty coconut. Additional aromas of flowery, ice cream sweet vanilla bark waft into the the nose, together with cinnamon, old, burned oak and a lighter, meaty smoke.

This drinks thick, showcasing the beer‘s decadent body in a marvelous way, with almost no carbonation to speak of, but a creamy, smooth mouthfeel.

Tastes of sweet coconut bark, and a melange of even sweeter vanilla and toffee, effectivly toned down by balancing bitter chocolate and an uprising Bourbon barrel presence. The oak barrels become more resounding then, joined by notes of black peppers, spicy licorice and molasses among a handful of ash. Finishes a little warmer, maintaining its intriguing interplay between the powerful barrels and the spicy, sweet adjuncts, topped off by brownie batter and well made, boozy pralines.

This beer hits the spot. Its mouthfeel is simply smooth and decadent, revealing layers upon layers of whipped cream. This highlights especially the vanilla in this beautifully, which manages to gain a fantastic, sugary and floral depth which then gets balanced by the dry, oaken Bourbon barrels. The result is simply a truly complex and fulfilling imperial stout which leaves nothing else to desire.

Slow Down IPA, canned 4 days ago.
This beer is not only new to me, but judging from a small amount of research, its new to the world. Its a colab between Kent Falls (one of my fave CT brewery) and Watson Farmhouse Brewery, an ~ 6 month old CT brewery I have not hear of until now.
And I need to slow down. Been working 7 days a week so far this year, Jan 1 included.
I freed this beer from its 4 day can prison to a Nonic. I hope it shows me some love in return.
Despite the breweries labeling this a west coast IPA it has some NEIPA qualities. The body is hazy, but translucent with a nice gold glow. The ultra white head is not long for this world however. 3.75
The aroma is pineapple to the max. Seriously, one of the most pineapple beer smells that I have experienced. 4.75
The taste however has a nice WC bitterness to it with a pineapple background. A very clean taste with an appropriate amount of carbonation. There is a slight alcohol finish, despite the 6% claim. 4.25
I'm pretty happy with it, but alas its website listed as a one-off. 4.25

Covert Artisan Ales Barrel Aged Erzen Wild Ale, 9.5% ABV. Pours opaque dark brown, with a half-finger off-white head that left no lacing. Nose when first opened was vinegary, but a few minutes later was a light fruity funk. Taste is quite tart with no sweetness or fruit, and I couldn't detect any bourbon. Sweet aftertaste could be the bourbon peeking out from under the sour. Excellent mouthfeel, with above average carbonation. Overall an excellent non-pastry and non-fruit traditional sour, which is BBA.

While I don't typically pass up Dogs & Boats when I see it, IMO they're in a different category than Fox Farm. FF has a much wider range of styles and are much better at delivering on a high quality product. I respect your opinion and I do appreciate Beer'd.

Rye Times, a hazy rye IPA from Fremont. New to the database (you're welcome).

32oz crowler served in a big snifter. Bought it on the 25th at the brewery. Label says it was filled on the 24th.

Pours super hazy whitish-yellow-amber with a huge fluffy head. Head collapses to a thick, chunky ring and a thin layer with a moderate amount of fluff clinging to the side of the glass. Plenty of active carbonation. Smell is primarily citrus pith and tropical fruit. Fairly muted, but nice.

Taste is interesting. The rye grainy spice is there but overpowered by the tropical juice, adds just a bit to a bite in the aftertaste. Plenty of pithiness, pithy-zesty bitterness dominates the aftertaste with that rye accent.

Mouthfeel is light and fluffy, really pleasant. Overall, it's good and it's interesting.

    Happy weekend, NBW!

Good Saturday afternoon, New Beer Weekenders. It's turned into a beautiful day - almost Spring-like. It's nice to open a beer outside for a change. Like many brewers, Untied offers a rotating series of IPAs with different hop combinations. I was excited when I saw that this week's release features Citra and Motueka - usually a great combination. Matt, the owner, told me that Untied has tweaked the house yeast to amplify the hop flavors. I really like this variant!

It pours a turbid, dirty tangerine color with a large, thick, frothy, egg white head and heavy, clinging lacing. The smell just pops with lemon, grapefruit, ripe peach, and the unique tropical scent of Motueka. The taste opens with tart, acidic lemon, lime, and grapefruit balanced by ripe peach and lychee. Untied has upped the bitterness and this ale has a clean, crisp hoppy bite at the finish. The mouth feel is surprisingly lite and crisp for 7.1% AVB. The carbonation is pleasant and it's super drinkable. Citra and Motueka work well together and Untied has brought out their best in this excellent NE IPA.

Second new beer today, another Wisconsin beer this one brewed out of Sheboygan. They have a great taproom, and like New Glarus brew many different styles well.

    3 Sheeps Misdirection

    Can Notes:

    Appearance:
Multiple pours from a 16 oz can into a large snifter, my glass for the weekend. Murky light yellow tan pour, crisp white head leaves creamy ring along the the top rim. 3.75

    Aroma:
Light Tropical fruit aroma, pineapple, tangerine, banana, citrus. Light hoppy bitterness, edges sweet. 3.5

    Taste:
Very sweet, tangerine, banana, pineapple, citrus. Malty caramel backbone, dry hops helps to contain, attempts to provide balance to no avail. Idaho 7 hops consistent with profile. 3.5

    Mouthfeel:
Medium creamy rich body, nominal carbonation, sweet, very easy drinking for higher ABV, clean finish. 3.75

    Overall:
This is a good sweet IPA, more sweet than my typical preference, but a well crafted beer. 3.5

    Cheers!

Smog City Brewery -- ...is ticking Clock (bourbon barrel-aged porter with coconut and coffee)

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Reviewing vintage 2020 @ 10.8% ABV (maybe 10.6 - it's hard to read the last number)

Coal-black body; thin yet lasting head. Coffee, cocoa, and cigar ash on the nose; very light touch of charred wood. Milk chocolate and whiskey flavors up front; dark sweetness; coffee; no perceivable hop bitterness. Heavy body; slick and oily; smooth residual sugar presence coats the palate.

By and large, this is a fine barrel aged porter. The coconut is likely hidden within the overall sweetness, but the coffee makes itself known in the smell and taste. Pretty good and potent.
    ----
I was going to drink another new (for me) Fonta Flora Brewery beer, but I let it warm up a bit much while doing the initial beef stroganoff cooking. But I've been planning to weed out some big dark beers that I tend to collect but not get around to as often as I should (I attribute this to my current lager/pilsner fetish), and this one was handy.

    I have no regrets...

Freigeist Bierkultur / Orca Bräu / Demory Paris - Got To Love A Rhubarb Sour

Fruited Sour Ale with Rhubarb, from Germany (6%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber coloration with no head whatsoever. Smells of a soft, tart rhubarb aroma, with hints of doughy malt also coming through.

Taste is a good balance of light doughy malt and a good, mellow tart rhubarb presence, as well as a distinct lactic acidity, which lends a certain lemony sourness to this. Finishes with a medium/strong sourness and hints of rhubarb lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a pretty good, easy-drinking and refreshing summer sour with a rather nice, although somewhat mellow rhubarb note, as well as some malty accents, that is almost a bit too dominated by the lemony sourness of the lactic acid, which kinda drowns out that rhubarb character a little, especially in the aftertaste. Nonetheless, it's still an enjoyable and quite refreshing brew that makes for a rather pleasant thirst quencher.

Thanks, my wife found it online a few years ago, and it's one of my favorite items in our home that isn't beer. We don't light prayer candles around here, we just celebrate our favorite artists over beverages.
I enjoyed your review, and the picture is great as usual. So often around here rhubarb is paired with fruit, most often strawberry. I don't really know if I'd recognize the taste of it on its own, and that intrigues me.

Give me time; I'm still pretty new to Fox Farm, but so far, so good (so good, in fact!). Beer'd's wheelhouse is unquestionably (I)IPAs, although they do make good porters and saisons, and their flagship is one of the only Wits I truly enjoy. They're not exactly cranking out delicate Old World style beers, though.

Lambiek Fabriek - Oude Gueuze Brett-Elle

    Gueuze from Belgium (5.5%).

Pours a clear, deep amber coloration with a small, frothy head. Smells of doughy malt and estery fruit, with notes of green apple, apricot and gooseberry, with subtle hints of musty funk and oak.

Taste follows the nose, with a good balance of doughy malt and estery fruit notes of green apple, pear, apricot and gooseberry. as well as a light citric sourness and quite subtle hints of musty, moldy funk and oak. Finishes with a light tartness and some green apple, apricot and oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and light/medium carbonation.

While this makes for a nice, refreshing Gueuze, it does somewhat lack the depth and complexity of its big brothers, being rather focused on the estery fruit, with a somewhat light but rather citric acidity and only quite subtle funk and oak accents that also have a bit of a "moldy" character to them that I'm not a huge fan of.

It's also a bit too sweet and undercarbonated for my personal taste, but I'm nitpicking now and this does make for an enjoayble brew overall that just doesn't quite live up the product of breweries that have been doing this style for decades, although they are definitely on the right path here.

I grabbed a four pack of Three Philosophers from my "local" the other day - and when putting it away, discovered it is the Double Chocolate version! Well, I'm sure it will be good (I love Three Philosophers), so I'll call that a lucky accident.

BLUF: This is more of a chocolate beer than a quad, but it's very tasty. Everything comes together quite nicely, and not quite as rich or dark as a chocolate cherry stout. The chocolate does tend to overwhelm the malt base, especially on the nose, but overall it's a very, very tasty beer, and I'm glad to have bought the four pack.
