Hello, I am a bit new to this forum despite having been a member for a number of years. Today I was posting in one of the threads and when I went back to add something to my post I was surprised not to see an "edit" button. Another member popped up to tell me that the edit button only shoes up for 15 minutes from the original post. I was surprised to say the least.

I hang out on a number of motorcycle forums and all of them have permanent edit buttons for any posts.

I see this as an important tool and I know it does help to keep down clutter in threads where people want to change their original posts.

I humbly request that you make the edit button permanent for any post.

    Thank you

@Todd will decide but it likely won’t be allowed that we have this « permanent edit button » here which would be outstanding for any trolls.

if you’d like any of your post edited by a Mod, you can still « report » your own post or thread asking which part you’d want edited, typos or anything.

Ok, I didn't know trolls were an issue with the edit buttons. First I've heard of it and it doesn't seem to be a problem on the other forums I spend time in. I should ask my buddy who owns and runs one of them. You're talking trolls vs bots?

Well it can be either, trolls or bots. I realize too well that it’s a bit frustrating to not be able to edit your own post past 15 minutes, but it’s part of our job if we’re asked to edit your typos or links screwup.

I think when this topic came up in the past it was explained that the time limit on editing also eliminates the arguments and confusion that can result from the 'she said vs. he said' being different after editing a post 15+ minutes later to change one's position on a point.

You can always reply to your own post for clarification reasons. Having the edit window close helps prevent trolling. A baseball blog I'm on only has 90 second edit timer. Helps to insure that folks get their post right before they hit post.

Ok, interesting point of view on the topic. I try to say what I mean when I post but occasionally I realize I missed something. I'm almost 15 000 posts on one forum, I think I know how it works.:stuck_out_tongue:

Although there are times when I miss my edit window and wish that I could still correct or fix something in a post, I think that a permanent edit window works against maintaining a cohesive dialogue. If talking about small typos, then one can just live with the mistake. If talking about making larger content changes, then properly following a thread would be more challenging for the reader. The odds of changing something that people already read, "liked," and reacted to would be greatly increased.

Nothing wrong with talking to yourself to insert a sort of edit.

Was there ever a permanent "Edit" button on this forum?

If so, were the reasons stated a real problem?

I can understand the rationale, but I was wondering if this has ever actually happened to any significant degree here.

Not being a moderator, I don't have visibility to past (or present) shenanigans you have to deal with.

We are a pretty congenial community here

(And, I am greatly annoyed by my own typos that can no longer be corrected.)

Stand by your statements! No need to change the forum policy here. And if you have further things to add to your post just self quote and add whatever it is you have to say as a new post. Trolls are one thing, but also the forum is a chronological record often with posts referring back to past post. If one would go back and edit that it could make the discussion seem all wonky.

I just don’t see the need to change this.
