Threw a surprise 30th birthday party for my wife tonight. I brought a few awesome beers for myself, and to share with anyone who might want to try something different. When we first arrived I cracked open a ballast point victory at sea. My wife's uncle, "Tio Paco" was intrigued. He asked me about the beer, and I told him what I knew. I told him about the other beers I brought as well. He asked me for a taste. So, I poured the rest of the bomber into a plastic cup from the table, and he was hooked. The rest of the evening he was interested. I have him some London porter, some celebration, and some rustic rye, and he LOVED IT ALL! ... I'm stoked that I got a 70 year old man excited about good beers. He even took an empty London porter bottle with him to show to the folks at bevmo so that he could get some for himself!

I think this is my first conversion!

Sounds like you did it the right way. You let him come to you instead of trying to force it down his throat. Congrats on your success and a very happy birthday to your wife!

I really wish we would collectively stop thinking about craft beer in terms of "converting" people. It shouldn't be the goal. This is not a holy war. It's beer. If your friends want to drink better beer, good for them. If they want to drink bud light, who cares?

Because the masses bowing down to the superior advertising power of BMC has a direct effect on the way bars operate, and people think about what beer is. The more people that stop at Bud Light, the harder it is for smaller breweries to eek out their product for the rest of us. That, and I like to help people enjoy their lives more.

I thought liking Bud was genetic. You can't convert someone if its imprinted in their genes. ;I)

Not trying to diss you, but what you're saying flies in the face of history. In fact, the craft beer resurgence started when there was basically nothing available but American Adjunct Lagers, and a trickle of imports. In the past two decades, the consumption of AAL and AALightL has stagnated while craft beer has grown exponentially. If what you suggest is, in fact, true, there would have been no way for craft breweries to even get a toehold in the market, much less grow their market share.

Also, smaller breweries aren't having any trouble producing beer. For most of them, the reverse is true: they're having trouble keeping up with demand, even the mediocre ones. And new craft breweries are opening up weekly across the US.

If you want to introduce people to craft beer to "help people enjoy their lives more" fine & dandy. I can't argue with that. I certainly enjoy my interest in drinking craft beer. But if you think it craft can't compete with Big Beer without proselytizing , well, it just hasn't happened that way.

This is how i approach beer in general. You like what you like. The one thing that I hate with the whole craft beer scene lately is the "beer snob" mentality. I dont believe in trying to convert anyone. I hung with a buddy who is new to drinking in general and brought him Heady Topper and he didnt like it. In some circles, thats considered sacrilegious but who the hell am I to judge. I know what I like and thats all that matters to me.

Of all the gajillion false statements slathered onto this website (and yes, I'm including northyorksammy's reviews), this is easily the most obviously incorrect.

A lot of people respond well when you're the one that bought the beers, and you're telling him about each one while tasting, most people love it.

The real test is, what will be in his fridge in 6 months time when you go visit him?

But I didn't like coffee (and certainly couldn't tell good coffee from bad) until I'd drank it for a while. I didn't like good beer, and drank Budweiser for a while too.

"taste" is pretty vague as well, we can assume that by using "taste" it means "better". That turns into "personal preference" right away which always wins ... trying something different is a completely different equation.

"Here" has always been about bringing awareness "beer", not "taste" but rather "choices".

I don't try to convert people, and I don't think GregFalone is trying to convert people either. I think he is just referring to someone as a convert because what else should he call someone that made the switch (or "conversion", if you will)? I will always offer people a drink of what I'm drinking simply because I love to share things with people. I'm not offended if they refuse or if they try it and don't enjoy it, and I do not think about it with a "holy war" mentality. I do the same thing with music, books, TV shows, and movies that I enjoy. I just like to share things I like in the hopes that someone else will find something to enjoy in them, too.

Good Lord! All I meant was that he offered his wife's uncle some tasty beers and he liked what he tasted so it was win.

"Taste" is a pretty broad term, I figured he's including "Good Taste", "Bad Taste" and "Little to No Taste" in that statement.

So, what is the correct PC term for someone new into craft beer because they like what you gave them?
