Good evening everyone! Have spent most of this weekend revisiting some old favorites as part of the porter tasting. However, I realized that the anchor porter I previously had had seems to have been the coffee variant ... so the regular porter - a verifiable classic - is new to me on this unseasonably lovely March evening.

I did drink it side by side with Founders porter which is a beer Ive had many times in the past ... Provided for a really nice comparison.

Focusing in however for this post on the Anchor porter itself - Anchor Porter pours a dark brown color. Opaque, and thinner in appearance. A lovely, thick khaki-colored head forms on the beer - about 3-4 fingers - and then dissipates leaving a thin layer of velvety foam on top of the beer. The aroma on this is dominated by a strong sweet caramel or toffee like character. Caramel malts, sweet chewy caramel, roasted malts, English toffee, cocoa, and a hint of coffee-like notes. Its honestly kind of sweet on the nose which I wasn't really expecting. The aroma is malty, with very little hop presence on the nose. It is a very enticing presentation.

The flavor essentially follows the nose with a strong caramel / toffee character to the beer. Notes of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and a light piney hop character all cascade across the palate. Its mildly sweet. There is a light earthy hop bitterness on the back end. Feel is light to moderately bodied. Very silky smooth and velvety on the mouthfeel. Spritzy but balanced carbonation.

Overall this is a lovely porter that is easy to drink and delicious. I can see why this one has stood the test of time.

    Greetings, fellow NBWers,

Decided I'd actually post on a Saturday, something I've rarely done since Saturday's became available for this thread.

Today was a pretty nice day. The temperature got up to about 60 degrees, and was fairly sunny out.

After lunch, I hit a tallboy of Enchantments. It's a series of hazy IPAs brewed with a different star hop each time, although it's not a single hop beer. This version's (#5?) featured hop is Talus. Had to add it to the BA database:

Fruity, juicy, and a little piney. Very easy drinking. If a local bar was pouring this, I might have several.

My final porter of the day, and one I will use as a nightcap, so to speak.

I wrote earlier in the porter tasting thread about the pretentiousness of this beer's packaging and including a limited edition art print, but that doesn't mean I am not very much looking forward to giving this beer a tasting.

It was quite expensive, far an away the most expensive porter I've ever bought. It will also be my first beer from Ontario, even though Ontario is the closest Canadian province to my home, and I've visited the province at least a half dozen (likely more) times, including twice camping along the complete north shore of Lake Superior from the MN border to Sault Ste. Marie.

So, let's see how it tastes!

Collective Arts Brewing Barrel Aged Imperial Porter
    ABV: 11.5%
    IBU: NA

Initial aroma is whiskey to the front, but nicely mixed with roasted malts, sweet caramel, and dark fruits (raisins?).

Very black, impenetrable even with a back-light. A tall tan head on top, thick and creamy appearing, but it does not last very long (as is typical for BA beers). It becomes a nice-looking tan bubbly cap and ring, with some strings of lacing.

Taste has, like the aroma, the whiskey front and center. Behind that is a nice porter taste of roasted malts, caramel and dark fruit. The alcohol is quite noticeable right away... noticeable, but not a hot alcohol burn, more like a mellow bourbon, neat. I'm liking this a lot. The flavor is very rich and complex; the barrel and whiskey are prominent, but not overbearing. The underlying porter flavors are quite delightful. The finish has the mellow bourbon and sweet dark fruit lingering. An excellent sipping beer and nightcap.

The mouth feel has a bit more substantial body that a typical porter, but it does not approach viscous RIS territory at all. It remains well within porter norms.

Overall, if this beer does not quite live up to the packaging, it comes very close. I'm going to relax and close out the evening with this wonderful BA porter. Well done, Collective Arts!

Up next is a new porter for me and one I have been meaning to try for some time now. I was happily able to track down a bottle for this weekend's porter tasting.

Harviestoun - Old Engine Oil "Black ale"

This one pours a lovely dark mahogany brown color. Completely opaque. A two finger velvety mocha colored head forms on the beer and lingers for a while before slowly and almost imperceptibly dissipating until just a thin layer of foam remains on top of the beer. Its pretty much a perfect looking porter. The aroma on this is remarkably complex with notes of chocolate, toffee, with a certain hint of creaminess coming through. Then, there are the roasted malts that have a mild smokiness to them. Finally there are some light earthy hoppy notes that come through on the nose.

The flavor follows the nose with notes of chocolate, toffee, roasted malts, a light smokiness, and an earthy hop presence on the back end. There is a certain sweet creaminess to the beer. Its one of those beers that gives you something else to ponder every sip - at first I notice the creamy sweetness and chocolate notes, then on the next sip, Im drawn to the earthy hoppy bitterness, and then again the smokiness and roasted malts seem to take over. The resulting effect is one of a remarkably complex beer that requires your undivided attention to truly and fully appreciate it. The feel is smooth and silky. Moderate to medium bodied. Spritzy carbonation provides a certain liveliness to the beer. The finish is drier and somewhat powdery.

Overall this is an absolutely delightful beer that for me a least hits everything I want from a porter.

Just a good beer all around. There could be a bit less hop bite starting out but that eased as the beer had a chance to sit for a few minutes. Better than some of the other CW BA offerings. A solid barley-wine.

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Ok, home from work, and my weekend begins now. I worked my rear off all week, and also enjoyed it a lot. however it's time to unwind, and what better way than a new beer. If I could find a cute single gal, that might be a better way, but, no such luck.

This beer was sent to me in an outside BA BIF, and thanks to a very generous former member here.

Yuzu Raspberry Sherbet from Untitled Art. 7% ABV.

Jeez this went down way too fast, I'm afraid. It was delicious. Very heavily carbonated from the can. It took a bit to pout it all into the glass. The nose was an amazing sweet raspberry. The taste was raspberry, vanilla and lime. Just amazing. This beer could be VERY dangerous on a hot summer day, because it would go down stupid fast and easy.

Pours a nice pink color. Very heavy on the carbonation. 4 finger pink head. good retention and there's some lacing on the glass.
The nose is full of a sweet raspberry aroma. It smells real to me and not artificial.
Taste - Like the nose - a nice sweet raspberry flavor, that tastes real, and doesn't have an artificial flavor, along with vanilla up front. I'm also getting a bit of lime on the backside.
The body is decent, and a bit creamy feeling.
    solid beer. Damn delicious

That's my last review for tonight, but I'm sure I'll have at least one before a work party tomorrow night. a party that will feature me opening my 47+ year old bottle of Crown Royal for the first time.

Cheers, and enjoy your new beers.

Pours an effervescent golden honey color with 2 fingers of pearl colored head. Clouds up a little as the can is drained, above average head retention & lacing

    S: Cakey, pineapple

T: Follows the nose, fairly dry up front. Cakey/doughy as this warms along with more pineapple & some mango. Finishes with a little dryness, pamelo & pineapple

MF: Pretty chewy, slight carbonation, nice balance

Nice take on this style delivers plenty of malt flavor with just enough hops to keep this very drinkable

3/9 can date... somehow it’s only 4 days old from SoCal.
    Clear bronze appearance.
Nose is tropical, pine, dank, blueberries.
    Taste is same. Bitter backdrop.
    Medium-crisp mouthfeel.
Overall: very nice. WCIPA will never die. This modern version has some hops that I find soft and/or new-age. Citra, mosaic, & strata don’t have the piney/grapefruit punch in the face of Cascade, Columbus, Chinook, simcoe etc...
    Still awesome 100%

(It’s a work weekend for me and couldn’t find an easily obtainable porter).
    Cheers :beers:

    Alright, last one for tonight.

Founders Brewing Co. - Panther Cub

This one pours essentially black in color. Completely opaque. A vigorous pour results in a nice three finger velvety khaki head. The foam steadily dissolves leaving just a thin layer of foam around the outside of the beer. Lots of sticky lacing coats the glasses the beer is consumed. The aroma on this is dominated by the maple syrup. You can tell this beer has maple syrup added as opposed to the aging in maple syrup barrels like Founders has done with CBS. There are less potent notes of vanilla and chocolate but its mostly dominated by the maple syrup.

The taste is not quite as sweet as I was expecting from the nose, but it is pretty sweet. Its got lots of maple syrup and vanilla notes providing this really sweet flavor. However there is also a prominent roasty bitterness to this beer as that base porter fights its way through the maple syrup and vanilla sweetness and asserts itself. There are some light notes of chocolate, caramel, molasses, a mild woody/piney bitterness and some light heat on the back end. Honestly, Im not getting a ton of bourbon barrel specifically, its more like a general heat that implies barrel aging along with a subtle woody-oakiness to the beer. Feel is full bodied and somewhat hefty but only for the style. My overall impression of the feel is a certain harshness or roughness. Prickly, somewhat spritzy carbonation.

Overall this is a beer that I suspect will be received very favorably, but for me, its a bit rough. The additives dominate any barrel presence, and its pretty sweet. Your mileage may vary, but for me I'm not disappointed to have only grabbed one bottle.

Good Morning Beer Advocates, and condolences to those of you who are impacted by the ridiculous annual time change. Welcome to New Beer Sunday #837! This is my 50th New Beer review in 2021, so on pace for at least 300 if I continue in this fashion, may still hit one a day.

My first pour today is another Porter, planned even before the Online BA Porter Tasting thread was extended to Day Three today (hoping all future tastings are also of the three day variety to allow for flexibility). This one has been sitting in my fridge for quite awhile, and based on my other beers from this brewer I have been looking forward to this tasting for some time.

    Heretic Brewing Chocolate Hazelnut Porter

Can Notes: 16 oz, canned I believe 10/7/20 @ 11:36 (can stamp smudged along the rim). Refrigerated since purchase a few months ago. 7.0% ABV, "A Rich, Smooth Ale - Porter with Natural Flavors Added. Chocolate Hazelnut Porter was the first beer I entered in competition. It took 3rd place and gave me feedback on what I could do to improve. This sparked my passion for using competition to improve my brewing. The next time it too 1st place and eventually a Best in Show award. There is something wonderful about the combination of rich chocolate and toasty hazelnut. When I started Heretic, people asked when we would release Chocolate Hazelnut Porter, but we had to be patient. Like that first award winning beer, I had to make sure the one in this bottle was perfect before we could release it. Many brews and tastings later, I am proud to offer you this rich, chocolaty, nutty, dessert in a glass."

Appearance: Multiple pours into a shaker pint glass. Dark brown to black, light penetrable. Creamy light tan bubbly head, leaves a fine lacing in it's wake and covers the entire top of pour. 4.0

    Aroma:
Light hazelnut, chocolate and roast malt aroma. Neutral, strength may have been impacted by the time since canning. 3.75

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma, and bolder in strength. Hazelnut leads, roast malt follows, hops provide a strong counterbalance. 3.5

    Mouthfeel:
Light to medium body, persistent fizzy carbonation throughout, neutral taste profile,. hops and sweet malt and flavors blend well, slightly chalky, ABV felt halfway through, easy clean finish. 4.0

    Overall:
This is a solid flavored porter, lighter than expected but perhaps age muted the strength. Hazelnut and malt combo pleasant, hops integrated well to provide a nice balance and contain the sweetness. This is a good porter with some kick to it. 3.75

My second planned Porter for later today is a collaboration between two Chicago brewers you are likely familiar with, at least in name. Added @scream 's Central Waters 2 Year Barleywine and Yard's Porter to my "Beer To Do" list. Fear the Founder's Panther Cub will be too sweet to pick up for my tastes based on posted reviews.

The nose has a guava and pineapple aroma.
Taste - There's some guava and pineapple in the flavor for me. I also get a lactose flavor, I'm assuming it's from the oats, because there's no lactose in this beer.

Good day BAs! Off to a warm and sunny (relatively, it IS March, after all). Yesterday's entry in NBW locked up and disappeared until today, so screw it. Today's New Breakfast Beer:

Kukoo Für Kuchen from Hoppin’ Frog. Received on 1/3/21, 2021 - Rare Beer Club bomber picked up at the brewery. Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 14/3/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle. Served at 47.4 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 53.1 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. When rear-lite, same with effervescence.
Head – Average (Maximum three cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density, average retention, leaving a two to four mm crown fed by effervescence, and a thin partial cap. Second pour produces a 0.5 cm cap.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Very strong aroma of German Chocolate Cake but mostly tends toward coco with some pecan and no coconut or vanilla. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins slightly bitter, marked cocoa flavor with hints of pecans. No hop flavor, no yeast. No vanilla and only a ghost of coconut. No alcohol (8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma, although a gastric burn smolders for a while prior to igniting. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost creamy, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated personal container) Markedly smells and tastes like German Chocolate Cake, sans coconut and vanilla. The chocolate shines and the pecans are definitely there. Mouthfeel is better than most sweet/milk lactose bombs.
    Rating 4.1, rDev +1%.

Godawful label - brown on brown and black background with no lettering - name is on the side panel. Sorry for the crappy photo with the beer stats.
