Going to be passing through VA this summer and doing an overnight in Richmond. We won't be there long and I'll have the family in tow so I'm probably only going to have time for one or the other.

So... Which one is the play? This isn't until August so obviously we can't really account for what the Covid situation will be. Hopefully (mostly?) back to normal. Will probably try to have a drink on-site if possible and then grab some stuff to take on the road.

We would be there on a Friday late-afternoon, if that makes a difference.

I'd pick Triple Crossing any day. But if you're into the hypey adjunct stuff, The Answer is a better choice.

Super easy decision for me, Triple Crossing all the way. The fulton location is huge and opens at noon. They also have great pizza on site and a really nice outside situation. The Answer is really close to the Downtown TC location so its really not out of the question to hit up both if you have the time.

    Good to know.

I wouldn't say I'm super into that kinda thing, but not really looking to just try half a dozen different IPAs either.

What about The Veil? Worthy of consideration here?

I've only had maybe two things from The Veil and was sort of unimpressed, but then again it was a few years ago. I've not had anything from The Answer or Triple Crossing.

Triple Crossing has a very nice draft list and they pride themselves on offering more than just IPA's. Not sure if they update draft listings online or on untappd but you absolutely cannot go wrong stopping by.

The Veil is definitely worth consideration and another that is very close in proximity to The Answer and TC's downtown location. They do IPAs well but they tend to be inconsistent. Lots of fruited sours and a few wilds on draft there. If you had the time i would personally start out at TC's downtown location and work your way to The Veils Scotts Addition taproom and finally The Answer if you had any time left. If I could only hit one, TC wins hands down. If you have time for a second stop, The Veil is better option in comparison to The Answer.

Cool that's the kind of info I'm looking for. Thanks!

If the family entails smaller kids, one consideration is that the TC location downtown is pretty small, however the Fulton spot is spacious and has a fair amount of outdoor seating. The Answer is a brewpub with a larger food menu and a patio.
Maybe none of this matter too much for your situation if you are going purely for a/some beer.
The Veil will have a ton of cans you can order ahead for curbside pick up if you don't have the time to actually stop and stay, but still wanted to take some home. The Answer and TC should have cans also, but less choices.

Yeah we will have our six year old with us. Considering we won't be there until late afternoon and then leaving first thing the next morning, one stop is probably all I will be able to swing. It would be nice if we could stay pretty close by, which as I understand rules out the Fulton location of TC.

Whether or not we can hang out or just grab and go will depend on the mood of the wife & kid, probably. We're driving in from Pittsburgh so after a 6 hour-ish drive that's fairly hard to predict... haha

Another vote for this. TC Fulton is large enough that I doubt you'll have problems getting space (though I haven't been there in a couple years now). TC Downtown if a couple random groups show up you're going to have trouble getting room if its you and the fam. Plus the pizza at TC Fulton is pretty good. And from purely anecdotal evidence, it feels like Fulton seems to offer a wider range of beers on tap while downtown tends to be heavily IPA heavy. Could just be my half a dozen or so visits to TC Downtown though.

A lot of the Answer beer, especially the heavily adjuncted stouts, are best drunk with another person. They're tasty, but they're so sweet that they can be tough to get through at times on my own. A lot of the Answer beers are going to be IPAs, heavily fruited sours, and heavily adjuncted stouts. If that's not what you're looking for (or the family will complain), then probably not a good choice.

Veil, to me, is more for beer nerds. When I've been I haven't seen a ton of options for people that aren't into craft beer, so if whoever from your family that's old enough to drink isn't into craft beer, that might not be a great choice. Not saying they aren't welcoming, just that they tend to focus on popular craft beer styles. They also don't have their own food like TC and Answer do, so if you're planning on eating you'll be at the mercy of whatever food truck is there, if there is one.

When you say "stay close by" do you mean so you don't have to drive back from the brewery (walking distance)? The Fulton location isn't far but would require a short drive.

Just thinking more for convenience. Doesn't need to be within walking distance at all, but with the kid having already been in the car for six hours that day the quicker we can get to the hotel, the better.

Understandable, I sometimes have to take those things into consideration as well.
The Veil & TC are approx 7-8 mins away so it is fairly easy to combo two of them into a stop & then a to-go order, you can even #dadnavigate your driving route to go past one or the other for a quick run in. haha.
Maybe you know this already, but I've had a ton of beer over the years from the two places you asked about, so I feel like I should mention -the beer itself will be a pretty different experience at TC or the Answer.
*Edit -Seems like you have plenty of detail about this above.

Being an overly nerdy spot isn't a concern for us. My wife beer nerds with the best of them.

I dunno, they have decent variety now - NFK Veil has a lager, a pils, a witbier, a saison, a cider, and a hard seltzer on draft right now. Plus 2348348 ipas of course.

Triple Crossing's Fulton location gets my vote especially since you'll have kids in tow. I like their beers a little more and their outdoor space is great for kids to stretch their legs and run around without being on top of everyone else or even getting on the nerves of those who don't like kids at breweries. They also typically have a wide variety of styles of their own beers and hours are better (currently). And you can't go wrong with pizza for kids. The Answer's menu may be limiting if you have picky eaters. TC opens at Noon every day whereas The Answer does not open until 4pm during the week even on Friday. Might not be a big deal since you mention getting in Friday late afternoon. Of course by August they could very well have their Fri hours back to a Noon open like the used to.

Good to know! My wife is the same, but I know that not everyone is so lucky!

Also good to know. I've been to Veil a half dozen times or so, but its been two years now since I've been. Back then it was definitely sour and IPA heavy. Was scheduled to get back last year but we all know how that went...

Mine stood in line in the snow for like six hours for Damon bottles at Hill. She's a soldier.
