California Brewery Doubles Down on Mind Haze IPA Phenomenon

Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker is doubling down on its runaway Mind Haze phenomenon with Double Mind Haze—the brewery’s juiciest, fruitiest and haziest IPA ever.

“Double Mind Haze is a carefully crafted next step in our long and rewarding journey through the hop world and IPA brewing,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It’s a platform for extreme flavor, making it fun for both the brewer and the beer drinker.”

Double Mind Haze is now rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in six-packs (12-ounce cans), 19.2-ounce single serve cans and draft formats.

    Massive Flavor Machine

Double Mind Haze is the first extension of Firestone Walker’s bestselling Mind Haze hazy IPA, which was launched in 2019. While similar to the original in malt profile and yeast selection, Double Mind Haze comes with its own unique dry hopping regimen and high-gravity character with an ABV of 8.3 percent.

“For me, the amazing thing is the mouthfeel and flavors that come with the increased gravity and ABV of Double Mind Haze,” Brynildson said. “When done correctly, double hazy IPAs transform into massive flavor machines with a creamy mouthfeel and saturated, mind-bending hop flavors. I believe strongly that the synergy between the yeast and the hops becomes most apparent in a beer like Double Mind Haze, and when you hit the right chord, it just explodes with juicy hop flavors.”

The result is a beer supercharged with tropical fruit aromas and juicy flavors of pineapple, melon and mango, all finishing with hints of coconut on a soft, pillowy finish.

    Audaciously Dry Hopped

Double Mind Haze is audaciously dry hopped, and nearly five pounds of hops per barrel are used in the making of the beer.

Original Mind Haze hops such as Azacca, Cashmere and Mosaic are now joined by Strata, Sabro, Idaho Gem, Idaho 7 and Motueka. Sabro has a unique coconut aroma, while Strata offers bold, pungent fruit.

“Some of these hops might stick out in a lighter hazy like the original Mind Haze, but in this stronger beer they find a perfect balancing point,” Brynildson said. “While we are great admirers of many double hazy IPAs, we believe that our hop selection and brewing methods make Double Mind Haze truly distinctive to Firestone Walker.”

In addition to traditional post-fermentation dry hopping, Double Mind Haze includes mid-fermentation “midferm” dry hopping, which allows the yeast to work on liberating aroma compounds to amplify the juicy, integrated hop character.

“The Double Mind Haze experience is all about the textures and the amazing hop flavors that we were able to weave into this beer with minimal bitterness,” Brynildson said. “It captures all of the hedonistic flavor and strength anyone could want in a Firestone Walker IPA.”

Mind Haze was a decent enough beer when fresh, problem here is just that. If it’s fresh it’s a buy for me, imo they just make great beers in any style. Get it to me fresh and don’t introduce it here “new” and it’s 3 months old already. Not a clue where the chains broke, from Ca to the local distributor, then go retail. I can’t think of a beer they make that if it’s fresh isn’t just purely outstanding.

So Firestone Walker is 'doubling down' on Mind Haze while at the same time discontinuing Pivo Pils. An indication of today's craft beer scene? :flushed:

    Cheers!

Wasn't this already out? It's hard keeping track of all "Hazy" or "Haze" beers

I guess they brew what sells but wish they would bring back original Union Jack, Gen-1, Double Jack (in 4/6 packs) and Wooky Jack.

Also, Sabro hops and Oats, no thank you. Nor do I want a 'creamy mouthfeel' in my IPAs.

I saw it here at least 2-3 weeks ago.

So, I take it the Union Jack beers available for sale today is 'different' from something you characterize as "original". Was there a recipe change? If so, do you have a link or reference which discusses what change Firestone Walker has made here?

    Cheers!

I’m lucky enough to get my hands on Tonewoods Brewers Cut which is a dry hopped Pilsner but pivo pils going away is indeed sad

So, what do you think of this brand? Is it a 'worthy' purchase?

    Cheers!

P.S. Related to Pivo Pils: it has been a very long time since I have purchased Pivo Pils since that beer is typically old on my local beer retailers' shelves. I would have purchased it more frequently if I could have found it fresh. In another thread a brewer from Firestone Walker stated they discontinued this brand since sales were poor. Well, if the brewery is incapable of maintaining fresh product on retailers' shelves there will indeed be sales impacts.

I really enjoy Tonewood. They do a lot of ipas but do Dunkel and a “foederbier” as well. Shwarzbier too. The dry hopped Pilsner....I’ve heard some say it tastes like nothing, but it tastes good it’s light but there’s enough there

I'd buy fresh Pivo 9 times out of 10 over an IPA if I could find it fresh. Unfortunately though the only Pivo that I can find anywhere near me is dated nearly a year old.

Sounds all too familiar with other one of my favorite breweries Sierra Nevada. Hazy little thing became their top seller so they brewed a double version of it while dropping their awesome lagers like summerfest.

I am sure it will be good and I’ll buy it. FW is usually fresh in my area and their price point rocks. I rarely purchase $20 4 packs of ipa so when I feel like a hazy dipa this will probably scratch that itch.

just wish we could have both. Great lagers and ipas fresh at a reasonable price point.

Maybe you should buy them up?

Since Pivo is no longer a year-round production beer these might be collector items!?! :stuck_out_tongue:

    Cheers!

Great example of the pathetic state of craft beer today. Pivo is a 1000X better than the best hazy beer ever made.

I agree 110% here with the caveat if you can (could) find it fresh; which I could not for over a couple of years.

    Cheers!

When hazy beer is outselling Pivo by 1000%, can one blame FW for discontinuing it across their national footprint? As much as I would want them to continue selling Pivo, I cannot blame them from a financial perspective as haze is what is selling these days. They need to make money to stay in business. My hope is DtC sales pick up nationally with the easing of state laws (one's gotta hope ) and I can at some point in the future order it directly from FW.

You guys do realize breweries this big make decisions on what beer to make and what not to make base on data right? These decisions are 95% data driven. They will literally sell so much more of this beer than Pivo it’s not even funny. And it’ll probably take 7-10 days less time to make it. Might be more expensive due to the dry hopping load (although 5#/bbl isn’t even that high in this day and age) but time in tank is probably even more important.

Beer sounded good until I saw the word Sabro. I hope to never drink another beer with Sabro in it ever again!

Not long ago I was able to find 3 week old Pivo. It was fantastic. Not to rub it in or anything...
