All else being equal, if you're tied with 2-3 others as the lead candidate for a job and you're the only one with a Cicerone certificate, I think it would make the difference of getting hired.

Wouldn't that depend on where and what the job is? I mean if you are trying for a job at Hooters or BWW I doubt being a Cicerone would make a difference.

It wouldn't make difference at Dairy Queen, either. :sunglasses:

It might make an impact, but not near as much as it should. As of 2021, probably not worth doing solely for employment purposes.
So you're quest into Cicerone shouldn't be solely career based, but more so for the intellectual and learning component. If you display the passion and knowledge of craft beer with the Cicerone training you would be a hirable candidate for the right brewery/bar.

Only two. But there are copious amounts of breweries here in Seattle and the PNW...
Since Covid lockdowns its been tuff. The saloon I worked in closed permanently as the owner died.

I’ve applied at two “taprooms” so not even a brew house... that require but do pay for it. Maybe they hired someone who had it already? I have years of experience. Not that Iexpdct to get hired for each application but damn it been hard to get a job behind the bar in WA!

Good point, but I was presuming a need for some depth of knowledge about beer in the job at hand. Otherwise this thread would be meaningless.

If I was much younger and had ambitions to advance in the beverage industry, I would seriously consider paying for this certification. In the meantime I'll settle for my at least 55 year relationship with and love for beer and wine. It's like a free Google without typing. I still learn and remember every day. Did I say Meantime, damn that IPA was awesome.

Something else that I can add here is from a different perspective as well as personal experience. During n economic downturn many years ago when I was young in my career, I survived a layoff of many employees, and my boss told me that my advanced certification in my field of work is what saved me. Sooner or later education pays off.

It depends on your motivation and sense of accomplishment style. For personal betterment/knowledge seeking, yes yes. For an expected payout, no.

I use certified server information as the basis for staff training. A Cicerone may perk my ears up to see or hear on a resume, primarily because the candidate cared enough/passionate enough to have done it. And it certainly could be an edge in likewise resumes...but humanity, treating people well and with care is the more important virtue to me.

Think about tipping...would you tip greater the server that took exquisite care of you, made you feel great about your visit? Or the one that knew about pilsner malt? However you answer that may help guide a decision.

The rude or impersonal person either won't be hired or won't keep a job that requires good people skills in any case, so the training has little effect there. If that's your point, fine, I agree.

However, additional training in your chosen field of work can be, and often is, an advantage in both getting hired and in keeping your job.

Additional training doesn't automatically turn Don Rickles into Mr. Rogers, but neither will anything else.

I dont disagree in anything you say.
Im saying, me specifically when hiring, i lean towards customer service over beer knowledge. Another industry employer may feel the opposite...and it may be different for different spokes of the industry like regional distributor rep.
From the perspective of brewery operations, my own opinion, is that im not terribly concerned w cicerone vs not cicerone in hiring. But wouldnt discourage anyone from furthering their knowledge of anything at all. Its fascinating endeavor.
And one ive done myself. What i would encourage is someone to consider why they are doing it. The expectations.

You don't think Rickles could fill in for Mr. Rogers? Sure he could!

"Alright kids...jeez, I can't believe I'm doin' this stupid thing...alright...how' you's doin? So I guess I'm supposed to give ya some advice, right? Okay, so when you...wait a minute...hey you, in the corner with the corduroy pants and shoes that light up like a spaceship...did you just eat a booger?! You look lile the Pillsbury Doughboy, and there are kids starving in Detroit who'd hold up a 7/11 just to eat a booger! Oh suUUre, NOW they want me to leave...don't do drugs kids...unless your daddy beats you, then you're probably screwed in the head for life...I've been Don Rickles, you've all been annoying little brats, GOODNIGHT!"

I think he coulda pulled it off.

Lol, saw Rickles and Rodney at Valley Forge Music Fair, maybe 1981- 82 or so, both phenomenal. Great venue in the round.
