Anyone have a link about the history of the bock name?

I don't have any links handy, unfortunately. I'll be reviewing a few books at home for details which I'm planning on putting in the introduction.

The condensed version is that the malty brown beer originated in Einbeck in like the 15th or 16th century, and that the Munich brewers were trying to emulate it. In their dialect one goat (ein bock) sounded similar enough to Einbeck to suggest what to call the beer without paying too much tribute to the other city.

Well I checked the best import shop and there's dopplebocks galore, at leady 3 maybe 4 brands. So I'll just poke around elsewhere for a regular bock or two, possibly a maibock and be ready to role

Missed the Porter tasting, but it looked like fun!

Gonna throw out a different idea. In light of Todd’s recent thread trying to revitalizing the Beers of Fame (and in the process the re-ignition of my own interest in that list); how about a Beers of Fame online tasting? Would
be different in it’s a conglomerate of styles but would be fine to revisit the classics as a group!

Self quoting to say the down side of this is I would probably get shit faced. An online group tasting event where i could bounce back and forth between Imperial Stout, Lambic, Hefe, BSDA, Barleywine, Tripel, etc etc....

There are some decent Bocks out now. My challenge is going to be not drinking them all before the online tasting!

    PIpeworks Genuine Bock
    Revolution Baphomet
    Old Irving Lifeblood
    Seipp’s Columbia Bock
    Kinslahger Mediator Doppelbock

Is the date locked in for Apr 23? The IPA Fest in Cyberspace is Apr 30, could make for two rough (fun, but still rough) weekends in a row.

No, the date's not locked in yet so if there are any potential conflicts like that I'd appreciate a heads up.

This does seem to be another reason to favor the 23rd over the 30th, though. I'd still prefer towards the end of April.

Can't be worse than extreme beer fest and the barleywine tasting back to back
Haven't seen the Pdubs genuine bock in a couple months ... Totally forgot about Lifeblood ... and I have a can, so thats perfect. Also just grabbed the Columbia bock. Did you try the Kinslahger Mediator? I had it and wasn't impressed. I was actually disappointed by it.

Hmm, I think I grabbed the PW at Trader Joe’s but didn’t check the date. Haven’t tried the Mediator yet but that’s a bummer. They were on a roll for me in the fall but the last few 4-packs have been hit or miss. I have 2 of their Altbier that I might never get around to drinking.

Last call for any further comments/discussion regarding April 23rd weekend for the bock tasting. I'm planning on having a thread up by the end of next week when it's officially April, so I'll be going with that weekend unless there's enough reason to go another way.

If anybody gets hungover I’m sure we can have a hangover breakfast tasting thread to follow. I’ll post up with ramen and an orange crush.

Lets do this!! Ive got a local dopple in the fridge already.
April 23rd is plenty of time for beer shopping! Hoping for some more local rollouts for spring. Got some solid lager breweries around me. Sure to be another fun weekend....that I mostly remember!!

Anything with bock on the label, pretty much. I'll post an explainer when I start the thread.

Thankfully I don't get hangovers, never have. If I'm heavy on the beers for awhile, like a week or more I do start to get tired and a little strung out. Easy drinking I'm good to go for months at a time, like now that I haven't worked since the first week of Feb. No problem starting at 10:00-11:00 every day and sipping on them until bed. Too bad it's so damned expensive here! $27+ per 12 pack of every industrial lager is as cheap as it gets. Craft/import beers are more!

I know, I know the bock thread is still going/just finished but it was such a great one, it already had me thinking about the next.

I think it was so much fun because it was a specific style but there was a controlled freedom within it too: bock, doppelbock, eisbock, maibock, etc. So it allowed for variety but kept it confined and allowed people to indulge in their preference.

I thought that wheat beers might be fun in the same way... Hefeweizen, dunkelweizen, witbiers, and the possible return of some weizenbocks...The style to me also fits so well in the late spring pre-summer warm weather before we get to miserable too hot weather of summer.

Not sure if this one has been done or discussed. Just wanted to throw it out there as a possible idea before I forgot.
