I love lagers, but they just don't get as much love as stouts, barleywines, and saisons.

I am hoping people can contribute a list of local lagers that impressed the hell out of them. It's hard to depend on Untappd ratings for lagers, so I thought this could be a good resource. I also think this will help to showcase some of the other local breweries around St. Louis that brew excellent beer that flies under the radar.

    Cheers!

I really love Helles lagers and enjoyed the heck out of these two:

Modern Brewery - BirdMan Helles lager
    Shared - Oma

I also recently learned that Dovetail ships throughout Illinois. I used my in-laws address across the river to have a case of varied lagers shipped. I still have a few more to get through, but the standouts so far have been the Kolsch & Rauchdoppelbock.

Great idea for a thread. Agreed that lager ratings are unreliable at best--much more of a word of mouth kind of style. Sometimes I don't want BA, triple, fruited anything. Just a beer.

Shared Adjudicator was my top lager (kellerbier) last year. Impossibly clean and crisp. I've sung it's praises in other threads. Hoping they brew it again soon.

Other that that, UCBC's Stammtisch is my go-to if I'm in a pinch. It's Bavaria in a bottle. Flawlessly made, like a lot of their regular stuff. I strongly prefer Stammtisch to their Zwickel.

Thanks for starting this thread. I love lagers of all kind, and I'm hoping to find some new local ones. I agree with UCBC Stammtisch. That's a great beer that I try to keep around. Perennial's Pils and Rockwell's Stand By are nice as well. Civil Life's Dortmunder is outstanding when it's available. 2nd Shift's Technical Ecstasy is great too.

I also like UCBC's Dorfbier if I'm looking for a dark lager. Schlafly released a mixed twelve-pack of lagers two years ago. Those were a good option for the price. I doubt we'll see it again.

St. Louis has got some great lagers between UCBC, Civil Life and 2nd Shift. Technical Ecstasy is a all time favorite. Same with the UCBC Zwickel. As for Civil Life, Ive never had a beer there I didn't love.

Does KC Bier Co make it to St. Louis? They are outstanding.

Sadly no, but its getting closer and closer. I think they're 3 or 4 counties west of St. Louis now.

I was a fan of Narrow Gauge's Turtleneck & Chain.

Oma is my favorite, followed by Perennial Pils and 2nd Shift New Flame. Of course Pils is a Pilsner (hoppy lager) and New Flame is a Dunkel (Dark lager).

I also love IPL's and Narrow Gauge did one a couple years ago called The Monday's. Maybe they'll bring it back?

UCBC just brought back Hopfen. If you like IPLs this one might be worth grabbing. At least you know it's fresh.

Hopfen a winner. Thx for heads up.

Rockwell Static (dark lager - schwarzbier) suits my palate. Every time I see it I just buy it.

    Technical Ecstasy a wonder.

    *** Thread highjack alert ***

Civil Life is the shit. As good as it gets. The kind of brewer you’re thankful is in your town.

Subject line says lager but, for me, I focus on malt vs hop driven. Civil Life has mastered the malt driven beer.

And, pandemic aside, the best patio and “space” you can find.

    Perennial Grace Hominy Lager
    Urban Chestnut Stammtisch
Schlafly Mexican Lager (not sure if they're planning to bring it back though) & Dortmunder (seasonal I think)
Center Ice Checkerdome Pils (again not sure if they'll bring it back but it was great)
2nd Shift Technical Ecstasy, New Flame (dunkel)
    4 Hands City Wide Pils
    Rockwell Stand By
Big Muddy Czech Pils (from Murphysboro, IL, sometimes available in STL)
And though the style isn't technically a lager even though it's conditioned like a lager, I'll shout out Schlafly & Rockwell for their excellent Kolsch style

Haven't had Static in awhile. Thanks for the reminder. Totally agree on Civil Life. I don't think I've ever been disappointed with one of their brews. We're definitely lucky!

Had not even heard of well spent but once I'm back in St Louis for work again, I'll be hitting them up.

While I typically think magazines that take a shot at beer lists fall short, this list seems to hit the mark. From beers I have personally tried to beers that people on this thread consistently cite this seems to be a great list by Sauce.

Glad I found this thread! Picked up some Hopfen, Stammtisch, and the Civil Life ESB while on spring break with the kiddos.

Hit up Urban Chestnut last night. Can confirm Stammtisch is awesome. They had a couple cool limited release beers I got to try. The 2021 Anniversary lager was really great. I forget how much I love their brew hall - great experience.
