Body and richer (chewier?) malt flavor and character. Sort of the difference between a Helles and a Marzen-Okto, but not quite that far apart.

But -- I'm intrigued now and want to revisit. I see it at a few, smaller retailers, but it's real dusty -- I've even seen the old label now and again.

I know we've derailed the thread a bit, but I've been enjoying the discussion about hefeweizens. Lots of interesting and tasty interpretations out there.

It'd be fun to do an 'amber' hefeweizen tasting with Schneider, Augustiner, and Hacker Pschorr's Sternweisse.

Didn't know Augustiner's was amber -- really can't remember if I tried it while in Munich.

Derailed? Isn't one of the Weihenstephaner cans a Weizen?

I didn't know it either until I ordered one at the Augustiner Keller . Check out the picture on the reviews page for it: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/820/4138/

    I can't argue with that

    Ah gotcha.

For what it's worth, I always try to decant the first half of a Hefeweizen now (at least the first can/bottle of a pack) to see how it compares to a pour with the yeast swirled into it. Ever since I read about Ron recommending this I was curious.

Weihenstephan's actually did taste better without swirling the yeast in if I recall correctly from this past weekend.

I recommend giving it a shot, worst case scenario it isn't as good and then you dump the yeast in.

It would definitely be fun because you'd have to go to Munich to do it!

Nah. It's there for a reason, and I'm a traditionalist. You don't want Hefe? Buy the Kristal.

I never cared for the Schneider Weisse, but their Wiesen Edel-Weisse (now apparently Tap 4 Festweisse) is one of my all time favorites.

Good point! There was a time when Hacker Pschorr did send Stern Weisse over here, (along with their Kellerbier), so we could've done 2 of the 3

I can't remember the last time I've seen the Kristal outside of the holiday variety pack.

Weihenstephaner isn't the only brewer of Kristals. Just sayin'.

But you missed the point, it's called "Hefe" Weizen for a reason -- embrace the yeast.

The grocery we usually shop at has it. Kristal W is the one that I still haven't tried out. It's located right next to the Vitus so that's some tough competition.

They use a DDDY format. So if you see L1390 on the back: Ignore the L, 139 is the 139th day of the year, 0 is the last digit in 2020. So that beer was bottled on May 18th, 2020.

hey. yeah...been a while. thanks for tagging me here.

we made our weißbier after figuring out (we thought) how to do some key procedural stuff: 5-step infusion mash; strict schedule for primary; open(ish) fermentation and dosing with Speise...and yet...

first batch wasn't up to our standards. so we went down the drain with 600+ gallons. regrouped and tweaked a few things (system can only truly handle 4-step mashes realistically) and rebrewed. we really think we got it about as close as possible...but even that is without the key element of bottle conditioning.

anyhow, it's proved a pretty big seller for us. so we're happy enough for now. always looking to improve of course. maybe a new system will better accommodate all the intricacies?

    prost!

NOW I remember, it was the 600 gal drain pour you mentioned. :grimacing:

Probably blanked it out on purpose.

Their Hefe will be one of my top picks for the lake this year!

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier and Helles cans finally showed up in Casper.

I chose to buy the Helles, best before November 19th 2021. Though I have not had beers from them that were excessively old, this may be the freshest I've tried. Amazingly good!

I also just purchased my first cans but of the hefeweizen. It was nice to have the half liter instead of the bottles.
