According to their social media, Lord Hobo is reopening. That is great news!

I've noticed a few comments about not bringing back the old staff. Anybody know the story there?

Same. My favorite combo for amazing food and beer taps in the Boston area. Very much looking forward to its return.

I remember sitting there late one night with my GF at the time. I ordered some Korean wings which they somehow decided to make nuclear hot. The bar tender laughed at me and asked if I’d like some milk with my lack of tolerance haha

I've lived in Boston or Cambridge for the past 9 years.

De gustibus and all that, but personally I can't stomach the attitude or the prices when the amazing CBC is down the street.

Many years ago Lord Hobo was arguably the best beer bar in the area, but there's a number of bars with better tap lists in my opinion these days.

Five Horses, Lu Lu's, Row 34 and Publick House come to mind.

To be fair you did say food and tap list combo. I can't remember the last time I ate at Lord Hobo though. What do you think of the places I listed above overall?

Lulu and five horses take the cake for me for sure

I like Lulu’s taps, not the food as much. Plus it’s a bit out of the way for me in Allston.

I do like both the food and beer (and whiskey) at both five horses locations but prefer the food at hobo.

Publick House is good but I’m not as high on their tap list. I do like that they would often get trillium, which hobo never did.

I used to be a regular at Row 34 when I lived in seaport but never go there anymore since trillium’s restaurant opened. I’m not big into seafood, but really liked Row’s burger.

You’ve named some of the best spots in town - all are good, but I love Lord Hobo’s food, I used to always start with their rotating belly special which was superb. Probably the only food/beer combo I like better in the state is Armsby Abbey - can’t wait for that place to reopen.

Some other spots I often hit include The Merchant, Ginger Man, Brewer’s Fork.

Like everyone else, I can’t wait to revisit these spots.

CBC is fine but I find most of their beers just okay. Their food is pretty good though. More often I’ll go next door to the Smoke Shop for excellent whiskey.

Haven't been to Lulu's and haven't had enough of the food at Five Horses to really judge them. I'm a mugger at Hobo - I lived within a couple blocks of Hobo for 5 years. I think Hobo has better food than Publick House. I think that comparing Row to other places is not really apples to apples since, at the end of the day, Row is primarily a seafood restaurant.

With that said, I don't know what Hobo is going to look like post-pandemic. I don't think any of the chefs that previously worked there work there any more. I know that the beer director was looking for a new job. From the photos of reopening, I only know they have LH on tap. I don't know the state of the tap list.

While I was still living in Cambridge a couple years ago, my primary complaint would have been that too much of the tap list was becoming LHBC centric. I do think launching LHBC really hurt a lot of relationships and limited the bar's ability to get exclusive beer and host special events.

I agree with this, I don’t particularly like Lord Hobo Brewing beer. But the bar’s still had plenty of cool stuff on tap the last couple years, especially interesting stouts.

Agree with this sentiment. At one point LH was one of the few places in the Boston area to get quality craft beer (let’s say mid to late 00s). It also
meant dealing with preening, surly hipsters both behind the bar & in front. Had several bad experiences there but would return on occasion for the beer, even having to deal with foamy/short pours, rude/disinterested staff, and overpriced mediocre food.

Thankfully those days are long gone & there are are limitless other options.
